Title: What type of lubricants to use for Hyundai door hinges and locks?
Post by: naser_1998x on April 22, 2017, 23:43:00: Hi guys,
I was looking through my maintenance manual for my 2011 Hyundai Hatchback today and noticed that it recommends lubricating the door hinges, locks and weather stripping around the door once a year. However, it doesn't mention what kind of lubrication to use. What do you guys recommend for the hinges and weather stripping?

Googling suggests motor oil or white lithium grease for metallic bits and silicone spray for the rest. :Dunno:

Post by: The Gonz on April 23, 2017, 00:29:36: My son uses speed cream in his skateboard bearings, so I guess there are all sorts. Since we've moved from overseas and left our chemicals interstate, it's high time we paid Supercheap a visit. :D

Post by: cleid on April 23, 2017, 00:31:39: I was also thinking of doing the hinges, my driver side door is getting noisy. The dealership I took it to be serviced at did nothing about it, despite it being on the service schedule that all doors should be lubricated. :mad:

If I can use motor oil that would be nice as I have some left over. Or maybe bicycle chain lube?

And if it is in the schedule you should go back to them and tell them because you'll be wasting your money. :goodjob:

Post by: naser_1998x on April 23, 2017, 00:47:49: I don't know if the area you guys moved to have a store called eurocarparts. But I am sure you'll find this bottle: WD-40 Specialist White Lithuim Grease 400ml, in any part shop. It looks reliable, what do you think?

Post by: The Gonz on April 23, 2017, 01:09:32: We have lithium grease at places like Bunnings and Supercheap, so it's plentiful and close. The all-knowing :link: Lithium soap - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_soap) speaks well of it, non-corrosive elements and all. :goodjob:

Post by: joebris on April 23, 2017, 01:41:01: lubing hinges is one of those items on the list to be service by dealers but in reality I don't think it gets done,
in my trade we use the WD-40 Lithuim, it's very good, we also use this stuff :link: Reducteur 300g Super Release Rust Disolvant | Bunnings Warehouse (https://www.bunnings.com.au/reducteur-300g-super-release-rust-disolvant_p6100255), not cheap but it's outstanding, just a quick spray leave for a while and then apply the lithuim.

silicone will be fine, certainly lubes well, tends to collect dirt and dust. The benefit I find with the grease is it hangs around for a long time

Post by: The Gonz on April 23, 2017, 01:56:48: The silicone type is the one to use for rubber and plastics, while the lithium is for metals. This has to do with petroleum elements not doing good to rubbers and plastics, whereas silicone stuff tends to be vegetable or synthetic based. The lithium product can cause your rubber to swell.

But silcome apart from collecting dust won't cause any issue and it will provide lube

anyhow after this thread, checked mine hinges, latches and i can safely say in the three dealer services my car has seen, not a baby's breath of grease has come anywhere near my doors. Luckily for me plenty of white lithium grease in the work truck and 5 mins later all done.

Post by: sundiz on April 23, 2017, 05:26:05: I've put normal WD-40 to locks and hinges. On that black sliding rod which goes inside the door I've used marine vaseline. When I tried more running lubricants to the rods the doors started to make nasty noises when opening them. Those rods seem to collect dirt easily so I guess vaseline seems to work better there.
