Title: Targa West i30
Post by: Razy on August 13, 2009, 01:28:34
For everybody who would like to spend a nice weekend outdoors watching fast cars the Targa West rally is on next week. The spectator guide is out, you can download it at http://www.targawest.com.au/tabid/134/Default.aspx or buy the Autotrader magazine and get a free copy of the guide. The rally starts on Thursday with a short run at the Perth Motorplex in Kwinana, followed by three full days of racing around Perth.

If you would like to have a closer look at the i30 then just drop into one of the service parks along the way - they are located at Burswood, Bindoon, Kalamunda and Toodyay and you can find out from the itinerary when the cars are due in - I do not have the start list yet, but we should be one of the first cars to start. Show a Hyundai key and you can sit in the navigator's seat - if it is an i30 key then you can try the driving seat :-)

Just a quick update after day 1: we are currently third overall behind a Nissan GTR and an Audi S4. We are leading our class by 24 seconds and the car is running great! More tomorrow, we've got to go now! You can watch live results at www.targawest.com.au.

Go Razy! He was still leading his class affter SS18 (they haven't yet updated the rest of the results for today).

My wife and I went up to Toodyay to watch. Saw him at the Toodyay service park, but never got a chance to say hello. They basically were jumping back in the car as soon as we found him in the park..

Hi!

There was a bit of a mistake in the results, the GTR and the Audi got a 5 minutes penalty yesterday, but that was overturned today so we are actually third overall, but still leading our class by 1 minute and 37 seconds.

I never thought that I would be in a position to fight for the podium outright, but at the end of the first day that was clearly a possibility. Today I was trying to keep the WRX Sti behind us, which I managed to do until the first service, but then they had to retire with a broken clutch so all that is left for us is to keep a steady pace and bring the i30 back in third place. There is really no chance for us to catch the GTR or the Audi S4, they are both 4WD cars with 3-4 times more power than the i30.

Yesterday we got the first stage win in Targa, setting the fastest time on the first run of Kalamunda.

I'll keep you posted on the progress tomorrow, but the plan is not to take any risks and maintain our position.

I am sorry that I did not have much time in the service park to talk to you, but the organisers decided to reduce the service time from 25 to 20 minutes so by the time we checked everything and had a bite to eat it was time to go again. Maybe tomorrow it will be better.

Good work Razy - I seen you leaving the service park yesterday, seen you arrive today but you were too busy to interrupt.  Got a good vid of your startoff at Muchea yesterday.  Man there was so much rain.  I couldnt belive how boggy the Bindoon oval got yesterday, and changing it to that estate up the road today didnt seem to be working too well, too many 'wooducks' driving around holding up the competitors.

Hi!

Thanks for your support, it was a really tight schedule this weekend so I did not get much time to post any updates.

The i30 did not miss a beat all weekend, we just rotated the tyres and changed the brake fluid at the end of the second day (which was mainly precautionary since Sunday was going to be dry and hard on the brakes).

All the effort that we put into the pre-event preparations really showed, the car was great, the service crew looked after it, my navigator was spot on and all I had to worry about was driving the car!

I have uploaded a small section of our in car camera footage, you can view it at:

This is actually the 0B car, which runs ahead of the competition cars to make sure that the course is ok. Our support car was a Hyundai iLoad van, with a very similar signwriting to the competition car.

Hey Razy how did you find the Sunday service park at Bindoon?  Looked like a bit of a mess with the competitors getting blocked by other cars.

It was a lot better in the new location, at least we could work on the tarmac and not in the mud! The traffic was a bit of an issue, but the organisers managed it in the end and it was not too bad.

Great work Razy!

I think you've done us all proud!

You've also proven what I have yet to have the guts to do....... get the tail sliding out without using the hand brake*! Not bad for a FWD car!

*Note the above statement does not indicate that I have the intention to do similar nor that I have done similar with the use of handbrake!

I tried using the handbrake last year but it is slowing down the car too much. This year I did not use it at all, it was a bit hard to get to it because of the bucket seats and left foot braking works a lot better anyway, especially if it is slippery (like the 9 left corner in the video).

I don't think you should try it on the road, mainly because the standard i30 diesel will cut the throttle as soon as you get on the brakes so you can not pull the front out of the corner. I did spin it the first time I tried, so this year we modified the wiring so the ECU does not know when the brakes are activated.

Yea I don't have any intentions on doing so, whilst I'm 21 and sometimes like a spirited drive I look down on people who 'hoon'

Also did you end up getting an ECU edit or not? I remember you mentioning that you wanted it not just for the performance but to limit the car to 130km/h

Yes, I did get the ECU reflashed by Martin at DW Tuning but only to get more power/torque. A friend build a custom speed limiter for the car, which uses the speedo signal and then taps into the electronic throttle when the cut off speed is reached. It is also adjustable on the go, and it worked really well!

Saw the whole thing in SA yesterday and never saw an i30 or any mention of it, other than seeing it in the results displayed on screen with one audio comment right at the end.  You have to be a Nissan Syline driver, a classic car driver, Mitsubisho Lancer driver, a Subaru, etc or you don't get to figure in the television special.

Seen in the local rag here the wowsers have been wingeing their little hearts out and the council is considering not allowing the rally to be staged in Chittering from now on.  Apparently not being able to leave their houses for a few hours on one weekend is enough for them to spoil everyone else's fun.  Also they are whining about wildlife getting killed (like it doesnt every other day) and environmental impact.  I seen a few weeks ago a similar rant about Rally Australia, and apparently one flight from NY to London uses more fuel and emits more CO2 than the entire F1 season.

F1
24 drivers
75lt/100km
300km race
24 x 75 x 3 =  5400lt.

Lets say testing, qualifying etc - lets double it - 10800lt per event.  There are 17 rounds, 183600lt for a season.

747 New York to London
12lt per kilometer
5570km = 66840lt

I'm sure that the Jet would use more than this as 12lt/km is cruising economy, not including takeoff, taxi and landing.  Anyway 2-3 flights would be about the same fuel usage as the entire F1 season.  I wonder if these idiots ever use a plane themselves?  It really gets up my goat these people get on their environmental high-horse when I bet they consume as much as everyone else without even knowing it.

I saw one image image of it parked at the start of the show in amongst the other cars.

No attention was brought to it at all except in the results board where footage was displayed in the background behind the results board.

I was very disappointed seeing as other cars from the Modern Challenge that placed lower (Holden Clubsport, WRX) were shown. Very disappointing indeed.

Another case of badge snobbery I suspect........ When will they learn?

I'm guessing they were really hoping for something bad to happen so they could show that.

Yes, the TV coverage is never fair. There are three things that can get you on telly: a crash, a very expensive car or some money directed at the TV station. Results are not important (neither us or the guys who placed second in Challenge got any coverage). The TV crew covering the rallies does not know much about it anyway, so they just show a few flash cars and big crashes - the producer knowsh who paid for coverage, so they make it too.

We didn't fit any of the three criteria, so no i30 on the telly this year.

I hope the fun police don't get their way and cancel the Chittering stages, they are really nice and I think it is an excellent way for the shire to attract visitors. I do understand that closing the roads is a nuissance for the locals, but the organisers go a long way to minimise this - they do have emergency vehicles available in case somebody really has to go out. And as far as the environmental damage - no wildlife was harmed in the 5 years of Targa so far and the CO2 emissions are probably less than a flight between Melbourne and Perth.

I was an official at Rally Australia last month and most locals were really happy to have such a big event coming their way, apart from a few that decided to throw rocks at the rally cars - a shame considering that some countries put a huge budget together to bring the rally to their place.

I consider myself an environmentalist, I do work in this field too, but all must be treated with a bit of judgement. After all, what good is a long life if you don't get to enjoy any of it?

Sad but true about TV coverage .
