Title: Black PD grille
Post by: Cookie Thumper on February 28, 2018, 06:13:43
I dislike chrome with a passion and have had no long lasting success in painting a chrome grill on previous cars so was wondering is there a PD model that comes without a chrome plated grille ?

Plasti Dip will paint over chrome easily and is very simple to apply, I did mine and I think it looks great :)

Did the grille on my Mazda 3 with plastidip and it look very secondhand after about 3 months.

Maybe I did it wrong but its not something I'll try again.

Mine still looks just as good as the day I did it, I applied about 5 coats - 1/2 can though, it should last at least a few years and I'll do it again :)

Pretty sure they all have chrome around the cascade.

Go easy and keep movement flowing constantly. 👍

The base PD model Active has an all-black grille. I know because I am driving one.

Sorry, I realised that you are talking about the chrome surrounds of the grille.  In that case, I once saw a website where the company does blackened chrome services, like badges, surrounds etc. Will have to google for that company.

Base model PD is the GO, it too has the chrome surround.

Am going to have mine wrapped satin black.

If the car is gloss black and so is the grill why do satin on the grill surround

Put up the pictures once it's done. BTW, do you think it's difficult to remove the chrome Hyundai logo from the front grille? Was thinking of doing that to give the grille a cleaner look. I currently have my rego plates in black too.

Fair enough, was just thinking gloss car with gloss grill with a satin strip in the middle would look odd.

Will do.
I think it will look a bit ordinary with the badge removed as the fixing point will still be there, I removed it my  2015 Mazda 3 and it look terrible so I replaced the entire grille and nose piece.

My past 3 vehicles (2015 Mazda 3/2012 Ford XLT Ranger/2010 Chevrolet Colorado) have all been black and I "dechromed" the lot with OEM parts were possible and then either satin paint or satin wrap on the items I could not buy.... the satin breaks up all the (shiney) black a bit and looks ok in my opinion but not everyone has the same tastes and likes.

Satin black is pretty similar to what some factory plastic trim looks like.
I personally hate when trims are painted in gloss, always looks cheap and nasty.

I couldn't agree more, like when gloss is used on interior plastics :sicky: if were me I'd probably do the grill and surround together.

That's why I didn't like the gloss black with the gear shift and tablet. Can't do much with the tablet but I was thinking of covering that gloss black in the gear shift with a black PU leather stick on. You can buy those rolls of PU leather on eBay for about $7 a roll.

Well I was at a garage sale this morning and the guy had a box of "smoke" plastidip for $2 a can and as I won't be wrapping this until after I return from Thailand I thought why not give it a shot and see what it looks like so I masked her up and gave it a squirt.

I thought it would come out a bit darker than it did but the colour is kinda growing on me and the shiney chrome is goooone !

I quite like the chrome. But that looks ok too. Nice pickup. :victory:

Yes, the smoke colour is more greyish than black. Still looks good. I'm sure with the black wrap, it'll look even better.

Looks alot like a brushed aluminium finish. Quite like it.
I was not real keen on the whole thing being black.
