I got my i20 from the same dealer as my i30 in their NW London branch which I have praised. But after 4 months, the interior mirror fell off, the rear stunts didn't work and the engine management light came on and off. As my car was covered by a aftermarket warranty given by the dealer, I thought it would have been straight forward-little did I know.

The engine management was not solved as it didn't come on all the time. The mirror was not covered by the warranty and was going to cost £50 and the rear stunts were on back order! In the mean time, they said the clutch was on its way out, £350 not covered of course.

After 3 wks, the engine management light came back on and off, the stunts hadn't arrived and the mirror is not yet fixed as the glass fitter was too busy. By this time, I had complained to Hyundai UK. Within a day, they called to say the stunts have arrived and the glass fitter is now available. However, the warranty company now said they wouldn't authorize the repairs unless I put in writing that I will not make a claim for the clutch in the future!

When the car was collected, the rear door failed to open. Endeavour said the lock is covered by the warranty but if they break the door card in order to fix the lock, then it is not covered. Lucky I had found one on eBay for £25 as opposed to £150. In the end, they managed to take the lock out without breaking the card. But the whole process took about 4 weeks due to the whole procedure.

All in all, the whole thing took about 3 months and the engine management light is yet to be fixed.

So different location same dealer?  Obviously different duty/operational managers I would think.   Not that it excuses the seeming slackness/fartarseness/fluffing etc. - I am guessing the i20 was brought after the OEM factory warranty had expired (from you mentioning 'aftermarket warrantly')?  Otherwise I would have expected the interior mirror to be covered at least.

The clutch I can understand (pretty sure even the OEM warranty excludes that - at least after a short time) - though I would have thought they might have caught that pre-sale.   I take it from the 'in writing' part that the warranty company is going to cover it this time?  If not then it isn't any of their concern (if it is stated they don't cover it in the policy) - as it really doesn't effect any of the other issues.

Lock being covered by warranty is good - but if they break the door card then the card isn't...  Don't really see why that should be your concern (though it sounds like they made it to be) - they are servicing/repairing something in a professional/commercial context... if they break something then they should fix it no charge.   If it is known it is likely to break, or is supposed to be replaced on removal, then that should be part of the cost covered by the work - warranty in this case.

The engine management issue not being solved - I can sought of understand due to being intermittent... which can be a right devil to find the cause - but interesting they seemingly couldn't get stored codes from when it did fault to give an idea.   Of course some error codes don't get stored - so are only present when indicated on (but often that isn't what happens).

As already commented on - not good at all!

BTW I think you might have, unless I missed something, had an issue with auto-correct or spell-checker... I am assuming those were struts rather than stunts.

Thank you all for the discussion and understanding. And for pointing out the spelling mistake :P Most main dealer now offers a aftermarket warranty which is really worthless unless something major is broken. Even then its like claiming through an insurance company. TBH, I was so glad the warranty went out so I can take the car to the independent garage I have been usingfor years.

All I can say is the Hyundai has still a long way to go catching up with the Japanese in this area, which is a shame as their product is improving all the time. As for a Lemon, I guess this i20 was the first batch that came out from India so QC obviously not as good.

You are most welcome

On second hand vehicles whose OEM warranty has expired (nominally 5y/unlimited) I can understand that (make the vehicle/deal look more attractive) - you say it is like claiming through an insurance company.  I am not too surprised at that - the aftermarket warranties are usually 'supplied'/issued by a third-party company that specialises in such and pay the dealer for parts and work for repairs that are covered; they are, in effect, insurance companies protecting you (and/or dealer if they offer it for free) from the chance of a big cost repair during the period covered by the policy - I mean warranty.
