Hi Folks,

How does everyone pronounce Hyundai ( I believe there could be some variations between countries)

I think most Aussie's would agree over here it's usually Hi-oon-di

One of my off-siders at work has had some interaction with Koreans and apparently over there it's pronounced Hoon-di (or something like that)

Any comments.. any other variations?

Cheers,

Dazz

I heave heard an advert that sounded like "Yun Die" with a very brief "h" before it.

I think Shambles is the closest.  Oops, did I say that.

Sort of say the "y" with a short "h" before it. Or, to put it another way, "yundi" with a short "h" before it.

Bob

From Wikapedia:

The word "hyundai" means "modernity" in Korean, and is pronounced [ç?n.d?]). It is often pronounced as [h?n.de(j)] in North America, as [ha?.?n.da?] in the United Kingdom, as [hi.j?n.dæ?] in Australia, and as [???dai] in Japan. Early American advertising for the Hyundai Excel car informed readers that the name "rhymes with Sunday", which is the correct Korean pronunciation.

If you wish to understand the word such as ha?.?n.da?  you need to look at this link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revised_Ro ... _of_Korean

My understanding is phonetically as either  "high un die"  "hundi"

Hey Shambles,

What's going on with your avatar... it's just showing up as a square with a cross in it on my computer (I liked some of your previous ones better - well a little bit anyway)

Since Hyundai originates from Korea, we might want to try and pronounce it properly.  As you know, I live in Korea and my wife is Korean.  This means very little, because I still say it wrong (according to my wife!)... but the word in Korean is ?? (Hyeon-Dae).  Koreans are a little sensitive about pronouncing it with an "i" ending, because then it sounds Japanese... which is not a good thing from their perspective.

So... say with me... ?? (Hyeon-Dae) - (in my mind...it sounds alil' like {yawn-day, with an "h" on the front)...

that's my 2cents.

Thanks iam30something ... you are certainly qualified to help with this topic...

Jamie,

I remember those adds (it's a wonder you do - didn't think you were that old) From what I remember a few years after that I read somewhere that they had had a re-think (More like a directive from head office  :?
