Hi all
Have a problem with a noisy engine
It is also unstable when idle
Never had a I4 diesel car before, only I6 and they were smooth
The car itself runs and drives sweet, acceleration is good
Serviced every 5k miles at least in my ownership (15k miles)
Had the problem before but it wasn't that noisy
Only can be heard without the oil cap

Was thinking, hydraulic lifters? Bit too noisy imo
Hopefully not the bottom end

I was going to suggest taking the engine cover on and trying to listen injectors via stethoscope (or a screwdriver). But opening the cap really made it audible. Does the engine have right oil in it? Sounds a bit like something in the cam, valve, lifter section.

Yes the oil's been changed last week along with the filter.
I'm planning on taking the cover off tomorrow to see what's what then...

I was just thinking about the oil viscosity. Someone put 0w-30 once to engine which was meant to run 5w-30 or 10w-30 oil. Lifters started to make noise as the oil was too runny.

It's 5w 30 now but don't know what the previous owner been putting in.

Sounds quite similar to mine both with and without fuel cap. I never did get to the bottom of it . 
After my engine warms up tho it’s mostly not to noticeable(unless I’m driving next to a cement wall then I can here ticking  )

Keen to follow this thread . (I use 5w-30 aswell)

I'll keep it updated. Finished work at 5am and need to wait til' tomorrow to take the cover off as have a lot of other stuff to do today. I'll post some photos too.
