Title: Quick test video from DoD F520 with custom firmware.
Post by: xreyuk on May 01, 2013, 23:23:07
Thought I'd post some footage from my camera, now that I'd done Alan's modification to reduce glare. I've also visited a Russian website where I was pointed to a custom firmware, which increased the video bit rate from 10Mb/s to 18Mb/s, and also added a few extra video options in the menu. It's definitely made the footage better!

Enjoy :)

The newest firmware for our DOD is:
Q2-4.7

I haven't installed it yet, but I will give it a try once I have a time

I got advice from here (http://www.taker.im/phpBB2/topic/92856-%D0%B0%D0%B2%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%B1%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9-%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B3%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%80-f500l-%D1%81-dx/page__st__14120__gopid__2267163#entry2267163)

It's all in Russian but one nice fellow happily explained it to me in English, and pointed me to the correct files and such. Meehalych will understand better :D

It's definitely a lot sharper and I'm really impressed. The firmware changes some of the menu options around too, and does put it in Russian, but there is an option in the menu to change it to English (go to settings, up one, right one, down fourteen, left/right)

The firmware backup and update is very easy.

Alan - I don't have it inverted anymore. One problem that I didn't think about (and only noticed when I came to use the camera), is on my car, when the wipers are off they are vertical at the sides of the windscreen, and wipe down and inwards (as opposed to up and outwards). This means the area around where the camera would be if I put it up by the rear view mirror is left unwiped, so you can't see a thing! I've settled on putting it down on the middle and very front of the windscreen.

Thanks guys :)

It's all in Russian ..

And now you've been banned from there for not posting in the mother tongue

They've even quoted their rule book for you :P

Quite clear explanation as you say, though I think I'll pass on it, personally.

Is that thro' Ince Blundell?

I thought I recognised the area..............
Used to travel that road many times a month to go to Formby/Freshfields and Southport when I worked in Bootle.

Bad road for accidents between Thornton and the dual carriage way.

40 MPH - which part is that?
Title: Re: Quick test video from DoD F520 with custom firmware.
Post by: xreyuk on May 02, 2013, 18:03:56
The 30mph is through Maghull, if you come off the M57, take a right down the A59 towards Ormskirk. Go through the first set of lights, past the Motor Range car supermarket and the esso garage on the left. You take the slip road off and go through Maghull there :)

The 40mph part is a bit later on, on the same road.

I thought it was as I used that route if I was going to the far side of Southport or the crem, going past the pub the Scotch Piper.

In the summer used to call in at a pub at the side of the canal, not far from where you stopped .
Not like me to forget pub names but have on this occasion.

I must say this new firmware is fantastic, so much more detail in the pictures. The biggest difference has been in cloudy weather. Before, I couldn't read registration plates, but now with the new firmware, they're easily readable.

Alan, I'd suggest upgrading if you can!

Whilst I appreciate your suggestion, I come from the old school where our motto is "If it aint broke - don't fix it".

I am satisfied that the quality of the video I get is as good as - if not better than - the video you posted earlier. However - this may be due to you using higher compression than me in the video that you posted.

I am able to read registration plates on vehicles, including those coming in the opposite direction, quite legibly which is all I need.

When DOD issue new firmware I might consider it - but I don't have the technical skills to unravel any cock-up I might cause when playing with third party fixes.

I'm pleased you are delighted with your camera - so am I with mine.

thanks  :D, I have tried to install that new firmware I told about before and I got my camcorder dead as a result, a recovery procedure didn't work, so I have reserved DOD F520LS in a local shop and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow (its price is ). At least I don't need to wait for the holder to come any longer  :D, I will get one with a new camcorder and will have got two spare when my parcel arrives.
