Basically, the best mpg occurs at around 50 mph or 80 kmh. This is around the speed where wind resistance and engine performance are best matched. It varies with the engine size and design of the vehicle.However, at that speed on EU motorways, you would most likely be an embarrassment to other road users for going too slow. You need to match your speed with the local speed limits and other traffic, which may not give you the best mpg figure, unfortunately.
