Title: Dazzler's 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid (Android Auto)
Post by: Dazzler on May 09, 2019, 23:57:09
Long term members will be used to me swapping cars.. Between the wife and I we've had 8 different cars since I helped to co-found the club 11 years ago, including 4 x i30's and 2 Hybrid Camrys.

Many of you will know we've also been doing a lot of long road trips lately. Now the SR has been amazing at filling the shoes of our previous car (2014 Holden Calais V) but we have missed the extra boot space and comfort of a larger car. The SR does a great job for its size considering it has 18" wheels with low profile tyres, but the seats are pretty firm even with Sheepskin seat covers on.

Fuel economy has certainly been impressive too.. Averaging around 7.2 L/100 kilometres over the first 57,000 kilometres. Yes, that's right, we've done 57,000 kms already and she's not 2 years old until the end of June.

When the latest Camry came out last year I was impressed with the styling of the Ascent Sport in particular and did take one for a test drive. I wasn't wowed because it didn't seem as zippy around town as my previous 2012 Hybrid Camry, but I think some of that was the fact the little SR has spoilt me in that regard. The SR is definitely a nicer drive in the town from a zippiness point of view.

On the other hand I do enjoy the quietness of Hybrids and the demo I drove, did get up and boogie when needed. The interior isn't perfect but it is a lot better than my 2012 model. Trish prefers the integrated entertainment system rather than the Tablet style that has become so popular.

So anyway, I ordered one in frosted white (metallic) about 2 weeks ago, but due to demand (now almost 45% of Camrys sold are hybrid) and also due to battery shortages I have to wait 4 months or so. No firm delivery date available yet! (I hate waiting)  :Pout: But I love new cars...  :happydance:

Most agree the new Camry is one of the better looking versions to have been released but not too keen on the fake vents near the tail lights. The Hybrid only gets twin exhausts on the left hand side unlike the V6 which gets quads.. So the first thing I'll do when it arrives is get a dummy pair of twin pipes for the other side (at least there's a spot for them already)  :goodjob:

Here's a few shots of a car similar to mine.

BTW, this one is rated at 4.2 L/100 kms economy overall!

My 2010 was rated at 5.7 I think and I used to average 6.1 or thereabouts.

The 2012 was rated at 5.2 and I averaged around 5.7 from memory..

So, I'm hoping for (well) under 5.0 L/100 kms from this one.  :DoubleKiss: :fingers:

The other benefit over my SR is the 15K service intervals with the first 5 fixed at $195.

The two things that most annoyed me about the SR were the 10K service intervals (I actually had to have one service at Tweed Heads NSW) and the way the car is vented so you nearly always have to shut the doors twice!  :crazy2:

 Glad you took it so well mate

My few idle moments.

Much of my last year in Uni was spent doing "Critical Discourse Analysis", which is not as boring as it seems, if you are a nerd.  :undecided:

Even the position of an in-text picture (top left or middle right etc.) will have bearing on the message.

PS: Hope the car comes sooner and its all you ever wanted. Gary  :goodjob2:

Cheers Mate, Since I was a fat kid at school I've always reckoned it is better to be stirred than ignored.  :goodjob:

It won't be all I've ever wanted , because it won't have auto wipers and a height adjustable passenger seat (but I wasn't paying an extra 10K for the top model just to get those two features...)  :crazy1:

Not sure if C4 Bruce is top model, but Im finding things like that, electric every which way seat, auto wipers and lights, permanent sunroof , and auto motor off and start at traffic lights. All fully explained in an illegible handbook.
Also the dash you hate is by Versace, thats why it looks like a handbag.

Mine has a most of those features, but I didn't want a sunroof anyway. The driver's seat has multiple electric adjustments. It has auto on and auto dipping headlights and stop start.

Lucky you don't do much driving mate  :P Because that unsupportive drivers seat would be a killer if you did. They are nice cars. I wanted one but the missus wouldn't let me spend the extra 10k on a accent sport hybrid.

Yeah, I don't think the seats are that bad, but we put thick sheepskin seat covers on and sometimes even an extra layer of foam or a cushion between the seat and the seat cover... :goodjob:

Thats why it is taking so long, they stopped supply to work out the issue. The recall applies to the few that got delivered before they discovered the problem.

It ended up being a very small number of cars but I'm sure they will be checking mine at predelivery anyway.

Ironically, Trish's Kona went in for a recall for a potential brake issue yesterday. I took it in and got a new Qashqui ST-L as a loaner.. Not bad, but the Kona goes and handles better...  :honk: :Drive:

Ok, so I took delivery of my new car on Tuesday just gone and already put over 500 kilometres on it. The 1000 service is booked for next Friday but the way I'm going I reckon it will have over 1500 on it by then.

Up until now the two best cars I've had for different reasons would be my very attractive and well featured 2014 Holden Calais V and my 2017 Hyundai i30 SR.

I hate to say it but this new car combines the best of both then adds some. Although to be honest wish I could take the infotainment system and menus for driver aids including the cruise control buttons out of the SR and transfer them to the Camry. Hyundai has that stuff way more sorted than Toyota.

While on the negative side,  while my favourite feature (automated cruise) works really well on the highway it's not as good around town as the SR was.

I've already put a K & N Air filter in it and it looks like I'm going to be getting around 4.5 L/100 kms (so hopefully 1000 kilometres out of a tank) the official combined ADR economy is 4.2 L/100kms.

She is so quiet and the ride on the 17" wheels with 50 series tyres is so comfy after the 40 series tyres on the Calais and SR.

She is the first Camry to have independent rear suspension so she handles pretty well too.

The regenerative brakes have a much nicer (less wooden) feel than my previous 2 Camry Hybrids (a 2010 and a 2012 model)

I've got some ROH SprintR alloys ordered and I'm going to put a pair of matching chrome exhaust tips on the other side to give a quad exhaust look.

This is the wheel I've ordered.

(https://i.ibb.co/ZBnhNy7/Screenshot-2019-09-20-08-17-46.png) (https://ibb.co/dPdQ7nx)
It's only got a space saver spare so I'm going to use one of the current full size alloys as a spare.

Thanks Adz! I'm confident they will transform the car . The standard wheels have been on all Camrys for 10 years or more .. so boring. I hope I'm not disappointed.

Will definitely share a picture.

Wow! I forgot how great it is to have 1000 kilometre range (as in my old FD CRDi and my two previous Hybrids). I filled her up after doing around 150 kilometres in the first two days before our trip to Hobart and she took $15 of Premium unleaded (I doubt they brimmed her when they gave me a full tank)

We did well over 700 on our recent trip to Hobart and I've done another 100+ since getting home. So now we have done over 950 kilometres and still showing a quarter of a tank. It's saying about 100 kilometres range remaining but it's been very conservative all along (so I'm expecting to get close to another 200)

I am still very happy, but she's not perfect. The stereo is pretty ordinary. I doubt it is as good as the SR sound wise. Certainly way behind Trish's Krell system in the Kona. Luckily I don't tend to listen to the stereo much. I may end up getting a little under seat sub woofer installed at some stage.

I'm going to miss the TPMS (Tyre pressure Monitoring System)  I thought it had that but looking at the spec sheet I don't think even the SL (top model) gets it.

A lot of the little thing that i30 owners complain about on the i30 are the same on the Camry. Auto hold can't be set to stay on permanently. Also, as I've said before only the base model comes with a full size spare. At least in the SR if you set the preferred Auto cruise distance to the car in front in the SR it would stay at your preferred setting. The Camry defaults to the furthest distance. There was another thing that the Camry shares with the SR and other i30's but it escapes me at the moment.  :spitty:

But don't get me wrong. They are all minor and easy work arounds. I'm still loving the economy, quietness, comfort and room.  :goodjob2: :goodjob:

Some more random thoughts on my new car for anyone that's interested.

I was thinking it seems like I'm not going to get quite as much out of a tank as my previous two Hybrids but when I checked the specs of the 2010 and 2012 models I previously owned, It was easier to work out why... Amazing really, but nearly getting as much range out of this model's 50 Litre tank as I was out of the 2012 model's 65 Litre tank and the 70 Litre tank in the 2010 model.

Luckily the good outweigh the bad because it is a bit of a love hate thing. The SR (and other Hyundai's I've owned) have spoiled me with the "detail".

Things I live or Love..

The new Camry Styling (except for the fake rear vents)
The Value for money compared to a similar spec'd SUV
The Combination of performance and economy
The Quietness of the cabin (in most circumstances)
The excellent ride quality.
The interior room and large boot.
The increased range between fuel stops (compared to most petrol cars)
Operation of Automated cruise on the highway.
Feel of Steering and Brakes (big improvement compared to previous Camry models and as good as anything in the class)

Not so great...
No TMPS (I liked the Tyre pressure monitoring feature in the SR - my first car with that feature)
No compartments in boot to hold small purchases in place (and bag hooks poorly located)
Menus in instrument cluster and Infotainment system not user friendly compared to Hyundai ones.
Tom Tom based navigation not as good as system used in Hyundai models.
No Android Auto (yet)
Operation of Auto cruise in the town.

I can work around about half of the negatives but fortunately none of the negatives are deal busters.

It's just a shame Toyota is so set in their ways to copy some other brands better ideas.

I think Hyundai has made a point of pinching some of the better tech from some other brands like VW and BMW.

If I could put the good bits of the SR into the Camry it would be an exceptional car.

Hopefully I get my new wheels on today (I can't wait) Talking of weight, I'm going to get them to check the weight of the new wheels against the OEM ones.  :goodjob:

Yes, they are much less noticeable on the dark blue as well. I may get them sprayed at some stage.

Trying to duplicate the exhaust tips on the other side is proving harder than anticipated. Probably going to have to get two the same made up and replace the existing tips...  :undecided:

The new Camry certainly is a heap better looking than all previous models and decent value for a hybrid. For the first time in decades Toyota is building cars that look decent and have comparable levels of equipment to their opposition.

Cheers Matt,

I didn't like the previous version of the Camry at all looks wise , hence buying a Commodore, then an SR.

Ok so I got my new wheels. @CraigB I made a point of getting them weighed compared with the OEM alloys. Approximately 20Kg with Tyre on Versus 22 for OEM. Interestingly it almost exactly offsets the extra weight of the OEM full size wheel versus the spacesaver. OEM with a free second hand  Dunlop SP Sport Max +21 KG V Spacesaver spare wheel 13 KG.

Very Happy! Think it has transformed the look of the car.

I've got two genuine exhaust tips coming from Toyota for roughly $100 all up to make my other side exhaust for the quad exhaust look. Probably be the only other mod I'll make I reckon.

Oh, and while I think of it the Ceramic tint makes a noticeable difference to the amount of heat coming into the car.  :goodjob:

Just for you Trevor @Surferdude  I didn't like the black vents any more than you did.

Went to my mate Garry (who did my wheels on the SR) with the paint, but he had just had an injection in his hip so wasn't mobile enough.

Went home and did it myself. Plastic Primer, 3 coats of Glacier white and then 2 coats of clear coat... Looks heaps better.

Got two more matching exhaust tips from Toyota for $99 and a length of exhaust pipe for $10 so when Garry is feeling better we are going Quad!  :victory:

Indeed, much better in white.

I suspect they aren't fake vents. I think they might be micro diffusers to pull the airflow in behind the car to reduce turbulence? Possibly too small to make much impact.

So I've now done around 2750 kilometres in a bit over 3 weeks.

The things that are better than the SR.

The three biggest things for me are..

The quietness. I can now hold a conversation at highway speeds with passengers in the front and back. Much less tiring on longer drives (100 kms +) Seem to get there quicker and feel a bit more refreshed. Part of this feeling is probably due to the 2nd big benefit the ride. 17" wheels with 55 series tyres will always be more comfortable than 40 series on 18" wheels.

The 3rd thing is the fuel economy. Overall since I got the car it's saying I've averaged 5.2 L/100 kms. A bit disappointed with this figure to be honest as the car is rated at 4.2 L/100 km's overall and I usually can get pretty close to the ADR figures. It should average under 5.0 on the flatter north island roads with 100 kph speed limits. Most Tassie highways are 110 Kph limit and I set the cruise at 114 kph. I am using E10 though which may be making a difference. E10 is up to 20 CPL cheaper than Premium down here. I have to run at least 95 Octane (sticker on cap says e10 is acceptable). Some stations only offer 98 premium (not 95) and this can be even dearer.

I may do a trial with a full tank of 98 but can't see it being cost effective as it would have to make well over 10% difference to the economy.

Some of the other things that are better include the Full LED headlights with Auto dipping. The reverse camera is much clearer and higher resolution (i think) and loses little if any clarity at night. The electronic handbrake is entirely automatic.  :goodjob:

It steers, handles and brakes very well for a big car but not quite as sharp as the SR. I miss the chuck ability and zippiness around town. It's obviously not a car you can throw around roundabouts like the SR. It will get up and boogie on the highway but 0-100 kms is low 8's (so about 1 second slower than the SR DCT)

So pretty much the only significant negatives are to do with the user friendliness of the menus systems and the lack of Android Auto. Plus the overly cautious behavior of the Auto cruise around town.

I'm still fine tuning my quad exhaust mod.

Had my $195 , 15,000 kilometre on Friday. I said I'd like the Android Auto upgrade applied if you will do it for no charge. Not interested at $199.

Anyway, to cut a long story short. I got the freebie and it works very well. The way the Camry screen is laid out I think it will be more user friendly than AA was in my SR.

Because I have set up a wireless charger in the Camry I reckon I'll only plug the phone in so I can use AA on our mainland road trips where I need navigation.  I seldom need that in Tassie.

Unfortunately our next mainland road trip has been deferred indefinitely due to other family commitments.   :Pout: :fum:

So i was looking though product recalls as i do and saw this one about Camry seatbelts then was wondering if seat belts are even required in Tassie?

Cheers for that. Yes a mate spotted that and because the Vin number list was oddly sorted I double checked with the Dealer (mine wasn't on the list)

We only have population of 500K but get much more than that in Tourists each year and some got their licenses out of a wheaties packet, so I reckon we need every safety device we can get. I think these tourists feature disproportionately in the accident stats as do Motorcyclists in the fatality figures down here. :Pout:
