I then get enormous satisfaction from burping the beast by rocking her gently a couple of times.

It might not be a dead accurate method - but is most surely more accurate that relying on the pump clicking off.
Over several tanks it is admittedly a bit academic because any individual tank errors are smoothed out in the cumulative figure. But its what I have always done so you an stuff that in your pipe and smoke it... :TutTut: :yahoo:

I've recorded every fill since I bought the car and my Excel spreadsheet tells me my usage and litres/ 100 klms.
I doubt it would be any more accurate had I brimmed along the way.

Often after turning to put the pump back the diesel has already started to move back down the filler pipe.
I guess that there are still air bubbles that last longer than my desire to completly and utterly fill the tank.
As for why, often I get another 8-10l in from when the pump first stops. 8-10l in the i40 is another 150-200k which extends the time before I have the hassle of having to stop for diesel. It means for example, if I fill before 7 nights of nightwork, I don't need to stop for diesel before they are over.

Gonz - modern fuel pumps (in the UK) have temperature monitoring and compensation in the metering circuit to ensure accuracy. Perhaps they haven't reached the full extent of our Colonies yet - but they will.

I've brimmed since new and recorded every fill with relevant economy in the vehicle logbook, which hopefully will add 8-10 thousand dollars on to its value when I sell it. :mrgreen:

Hey Gonz, if you don't brim a diesel how do you calculate the often fantastic fuel economy figures you've posted in the past.
Do you calculate or post from the trip computer?
For me the trip computer can be a bit optimistic.

Brimming, or to first click, anything that is done consistently from fill to fill. I just don't like brimming, and don't do it again once I've got my idea of an economy figure until circumstances change, such as living in a different city.Precisely, hence I've never brimmed. :winker:
