Title: Hmmmm
Post by: Phil №❶ on February 11, 2017, 09:55:21
Last week, I filled as in brimmed our car until the diesel fuel was up to the lip of the fuel pipe. I paid the bill and drove home, about 1 km. I add a water conditioner and when I arrived home, the furl was no where to be seen in the filler pipe. I don't bel.ieve that the fuel was consumed on the sdreive home, so where did it go

I'm starting to think brimming is not actually brimming

Maybe a bit splashed out?

No evidence of any leaks at home and fuel expansion would not have been an issue. Drive home was only 2 mins max.

I've always been somewhat cynical about brimming. Where does the fuel go when it wants to expand in the heat?

It can piss on the road so as not to blow the tank, but this did not happen to me.

Precisely, hence I've never brimmed. :winker:

For your instance I can only guess some part of the fuel system still had some void and that subsequent function and movement resolved it, resulting in an apparent sudden loss. :Dunno:

Does nobody else rock their i30 when they fill up?

As fuel prices continue to spiral around these parts I often fill-click-fill-click-fill-click.

I then get enormous satisfaction from burping the beast by rocking her gently a couple of times.

Followed by my i30 :D

Nobody else do this...? Often get another litre in there.

I never have but then again I'm happy to avoid brimming anyway. A fair enough approach if brimming is your thing. :goodjob:

Was gonna say the same, there would be an air bubble as the top of the tank is not flat.

I'm a confirmed brimmer.

Now that will get you locked up around here.

Must be more lenient in manc land showing that kind of affection....

I have always brimmed my car by fill click fill click etc until the clicks are close together then I dribble fuel in in a small steady stream, then when it brims I rock the car. I can always get 2.3 litres in after shaking the car which indicates consistency.

It might not be a dead accurate method - but is most surely more accurate that relying on the pump clicking off.

Over several tanks it is admittedly a bit academic because any individual tank errors are smoothed out in the cumulative figure. But its what I have always done so you an stuff that in your pipe and smoke it... :TutTut: :yahoo:

I'm with Gonz. Can't see any point in brimming.
I've recorded every fill since I bought the car and my Excel spreadsheet tells me my usage and  litres/ 100 klms.
I doubt it would be any more  accurate had I brimmed along the way.

I love a good brim. I brim until I can see the diesel at the topof the filler pipe.

Often after turning to put the pump back the diesel has already started to move back down the filler pipe.

I guess that there are still air bubbles that last longer than my desire to completly and utterly fill the tank.

As for why, often I get another 8-10l in from when the pump first stops. 8-10l in the i40 is another 150-200k which extends the time before I have the hassle of having to stop for diesel. It means for example, if I fill before 7 nights of nightwork, I don't need to stop for diesel before they are over.

:MeToo: On longer trips away, it can make the difference between having to stop for a fill at a dearer country location too... :victory:

I never brim. I fill the tank so often so there is no advantage for me in the brimming. I never let the tank go below 1/4. I usually fill up when it is 1/2

Instead of brimming, which (other than economy games) does nothing more than potentially reduce the frequency of fills, focus more on filling early morning when it's colder. Then you'll get a bit more fuel past the pump for free - now that's the true definition of economy. :winker:

I feel lucky. It was sub zero degrees last time I filled up...   (Have been sub zero 24/7 for the past 10 days)

Gonz - modern fuel pumps (in the UK) have temperature monitoring and compensation in the metering circuit to ensure accuracy. Perhaps they haven't reached the full extent of our Colonies yet - but they will.

I'm with Beerman.
Not physically, right now, but on this issue.
8-10 litres means a couple of hundred kays and I don't like going to servos.
I've brimmed since new and recorded every fill with relevant economy in the vehicle logbook, which hopefully will add 8-10 thousand dollars on to its value when I sell it.

Hey Gonz, if you don't brim a diesel how do you calculate the often fantastic fuel economy figures you've posted in the past.

Do you calculate or post from the trip computer?

For me the trip computer can be a bit optimistic.

Brimming, or to first click, anything that is done consistently from fill to fill. I just don't like brimming, and  don't do it again once I've got my idea of an economy figure until circumstances change, such as living in a different city.

Oh, I said I've never brimmed. That should read I've never made it a habit to consistently brim. :-[
