Title: GD Diesel Capacity
Post by: Doggie 1 on May 20, 2013, 10:05:15
I filled up last week and put 54.12 litres into the GD's 50 litre fuel tank.

Jeepers, you wouldn't last long over here in Blighty

54 litres at £1.39/L = £75, which is AUD116 (at $1.55 per £).

Gee, I'm whinging here because they're charging us more than ULP.
When I first bought my previous i30, diesel was actually cheaper than petrol, but that hasn't been the case for a long time now.  :disapp:

On 8th December last with my 2012 GD with an estimated 15 miles to empty - I put 62.3 litres into my 53 litre tank.  My previous best was 60.7 litres at 28 miles to empty.

Go back and fill yours up properly................

How do you do that? When mine gets down to 50km to empty it just goes blank so I fill up but I never get more than 43L in it. Do you just keep driving on empty and work out your litres per 100 kms so you know how much you can squeeze out of it? I'm too paranoid about running out of diesel, I've heard it isn't a good practice.

One of the disadvantages of Diesel is running out of fuel. If you do, you have to disconnect a pipe and manually pump a button to suck fuel from the tank back up to the filter. Easy enough to do but smelly and inconvenient.

The secret to absolutely filling the tank is what we call brimming, that is filling slowly till the fluid is sitting at the end of the filler neck of the tank. Diesel foams a lot, so it can take up to 10 minutes to fill this way. Also not a good idea if it's hot weather and you're not going to drive a reasonable distance, as fuel can expand and there's nowhere for it to go except on the tarmac.

The tank size quoted allows for an air gap, for expansion etc, but some of us use that gap for fuel, I do.

I think I can beat that with my previous 53 litre tank car.  ;)
But with the 50 litre tank it's more difficult to stretch I think and I don't want to push my luck.

Mine goes blank at about 35 miles to empty - so I count down the miles after that on the odo to guess what it would have predicted on the display.

The closest to theoretical empty I have run has been 12 miles.
