Title: Roof rails
Post by: TrishCW on January 25, 2011, 09:31:37
Hi, Has anybody seen the new hatch with roof rails I saw one today, it was parked in the street, right in front of me. They would of had them custom made I presume, or are these an accessory you can get ?

Trish, I'm confused. Your car has roof rails. Are you taking the micky?

Or do you mean cross bars on the rails? In which case they are available from Rola Roof Racks.
And probably Thule.

Yes , apparently they were.. but black not silver.

Hi Trish, the colour coded rails you have in the pic look good.
on my poverty pack SX hatch  i can see there is clip in covers on mounting points.
I think you should ask 2i30s to remove the covers on his Hatch model, then he would see how they mount, and be able to work out how to remove yours & colour match them.
Personaly i think chrome might look good like chrome door handles to match.

Hi Lester.. They are cross bars haven't found anywhere that sells roof rails for a hatch (yet?) so maybe the hatch Trish saw did have custom made ones??

Lakes: good idea about checking the hatch mounting points.. Might also ask at the dealer..

P.S. Not colour coded in Trish's signature (just a trick of the light..) But 2we did think about it..

there are clip off plastic covers over the mounting holes in the roof on my hatch, but it still doesn't help me see how to un screw the roof bars on our cw.

Hi.

I think that they are screwed inside the car. It's needed remove the interior roof to access the screws. Not easy.

That was needed on my old Opel Astra Caravan.

I would expect, if indeed they screw from inside, when you remove the plastic covers you would see a rubber stopper for the hole.

Hi.

After my previous post, I look closer for my roof racks.

There are screws underneath the bars. You can unscrew them and try to slide the support and see if something happens.

It's just an idea!

(I do not know if it's possible because I have not tried, so you're on your own risk).

carib

Mum taught me to cook, iron, sew etc.. when I was a kid.. I don't mind doing that sort of stuff once in a while but I wouldn't want to do it all the time

I have way too many clothes for a man (like 20 jackets) but only wear the same old stuff all the time (I have favourites)  :P

Hey Trish..

I forgot to tell you on the phone that we have to remove the headlining to remove the rails.. The insider that told me that suggested we mask the whole top of the CW and spray them in place

(I could do it but would have to be very careful )

Maybe we should get those chrome door handle covers after all

Arrrh stick with the silver roof rails Dazz .... It really suits the pale blue, my silver RR look more odd on the hypersilver duco and worse still with my black 'rola' x bars .

If you change the silver RR to black ! even if it looks cool mm ? you are playing with the MY up grades and it could have a negative cost effect come trade in time ?

With all the Black highlights on the car the Silver doesn't look quite right (in mine and Trish's opinion...) I'll see what she thinks when she gets home in a couple of weeks...

At the moment they sort of blend with the car.. Might look better with Chrome door handle covers off ebay .. I might have to photoshop some on and see how it looks (But ultimately Trishie's decision)  :scared:
Title: Re: Roof rails
Post by: Lorian on January 31, 2011, 21:07:08
You could always crack the headlights open and paint them silver too

If you aren't careful you'll end up with a 2007 model.

Seriously, leave painting them for a while and they'll become less important. Taking the headlining out must be avoided!
Title: Re: Roof rails
Post by: Surferdude on January 31, 2011, 22:49:20
I'm sure they could be sprayed "in situ", with careful masking and a dust cover over the rest of the car.

Hi.

Just one correction.

I think that there is a little mistake, because accim is from Europe and on Europe the CW have roof rails.

On USA and Canada the Elantra have not.

I have the crome handles from ebay they are really good, we have not had them for long so can't say how they will last. but look like they are of good quality.
They are also easy to fit.

Very interesting thread. 2i30s, thanks for the pics. Now, if only I can find someone who wants to swap a black set of roof rails for my silver set, I'd be very happy. (I'm in Brisbane, but sure we can come to some arrangement) :D :D

Regarding the chrome door handles. I've had them on for several months and not only do they look great, they are holding up very well. A bit of advice for anyone thinking of getting a set off eBay, get them from the Korean or Hong Kong store, they are sooo much cheaper.

I wish I was smart enough or computer savvy to post photo's of my little handy work  :-[

I've just recently finished my roof cross bars after spraying them silver and they look good  :) the black Repco Rola cross bars stood out on the silver roof rails like dogs danglers and made the roof look a bit cheap and nasty but now with them being silver they blend in as part of the car and I'm very pleased.

Well done, good work finding the clue to removing the roof rails... I am thinking of a compromise... Don't really like the silver rails on my CW but don't want to paint them or pay for a whole new set.  My thought is to try and source 4 x end caps in BLACK and have a combination.. black ends with silver bars... like many other car makes have.  Might be a cheap way out, can always put the old silver ones back later if needed plus if I get silver Whispbar cross bars then they won't look odd fitted to the original silver bits.   ?

Unless I can find a nice wrecker person out there it looks like I will be staying with the silver rails.  Had considered getting a set of 4 BLACK covers for the ends BUT spoke with Hyundai Parts contact here in Adelaide.... their list price is $85 each.... Over $110.oo each RRP.   :fum:
That is just for the plastic end covers not the entire rail setup... WHOA!  I think I might get into the plastics moulding business.
There goes my theory of a compromise of black ends and silver rails.

 Before you do, slip into a local plastics injection moulding factory and ask them to show you a mould and what's involved in making it. Pick something simple like an ice cream container.

I'm still not sure why you can't just spray the caps black and put them back on  I would if I wanted that look ... :undecided:
