I did a check under the bonnet yesterday, topped up the washer reservoir, etc. I also checked the oil level. It's halfway between the full and low marks.

I never checked it when I got the car, but a bit over 5,000km later I'm wondering if it's using oil.

I'd like to hear from diesel i30 owners if these things use a bit of oil.

My diesel i30 has never required the engine oil to be topped up between the 12000 mile services.

Martin, I also had to top up the oil not so long after I bought my i30.
I've never had to add any since so I suspect it was never up to the full mark right from the start.  :undecided:
Btw, did you purchase your i30 from Traralgon?

I've only ever checked my oil level once in 82,000 miles and spookily enough that was last week (it's due a 7 year service about now). It was showing about 10mm from the full mark.

Its never needed oil but I have had to top the coolant once in the 4 months I've had it but I suspect that was the first time ever in its 3 years.

Have had my CRDi for 26000 km now, 152000 km on the clock, never had to top up the oil, not even when towing the caravan (1400 kg) 3500 km on a summervacation.  :goodjob2:

No need to worry about oil usage, but of course it's wise to check now and then.

There are some high km i30s out there.
I wonder what the highest km i30 would be and where it is?

The highest km cars will almost certainly be the factory test mules which can knock up huge distances during the rigorous test and development programme. They are used on shifts continuously.

I bet there are some privately owned 2007 cars out on the road that have done 300,000 or more

Anyway, what are you doing buying or getting your i30 serviced out here?

They offered me a $400-$500 better deal (which was also way better than a car broker could do) than my local Hyundai dealer so it was definitely worth my while travelling the 50-55 minutes over to Traralgon.  :)

I let the local dealer service my i30 as they seem to be pretty competitive as far as their service costs go....(I buy most consumables such as filters online)  :D

Rusty, a bulletin on the front page suggests that a server backup was lost when the software was updated so they rolled it back to a previous one.

What did you say to me, anyway?

And you seem to know my name. I assume that you're on another forum that I frequent?

Thanks for pointing that out, Scuba Steve, I was starting to think it was Groundhog Day....

Anyhow, back to your question, Martin....
It wasn't my post that went walkabout,  it was actually yours....
As you can see in reply 11, I part quoted you yet the post I quoted from (yours) is now gone...

Oh, as for knowing you? I've been on a couple of motorcycle forums over the years and I remembered your username.... :D

Back to diesel i30's & and consumption.  I check my cars oil level at least every couple of weeks, and keep it at about the max.  I have only once had to top up a little and that was in its very early life - ie I guess when the engine was bedding in.  Now done 18000 miles and haven't needed top up again.

Great to know these engines are built tight. This i30 has HEAPS to live up to as it has replaced it older brother an X3 Excell/Accent with 300,000 on the clock and was used for towing, been driven hard, but always fully maintained... The i30 wont be treated any differently.

Gee, that'd be a lovely car to buy.
The kms are one thing but what turned me off was the ex driving school bit.
I wonder how many kms it's done in reverse?  :undecided:

And its always handy to have brake pedals on the passenger side so you can stop the car together. Ideal for a couple wanting to do everything together.

Anyone with a petrol i30 will last forever with servicing. Im a but of a fan of the 2.0 Beta motor.

Just check after motor has been runing & then let it stand for a few minutes to let oil from up in head return to sump. Also make sure car not parked on a hill , make sure it is level, then pull dip stick wipe it and push it all the way in then check. if its not close to full just top up with small amout & check again.
nothing to worry about just better to have enough oil than have it too low. my first i30 CRDi i needed to top it up a few times in its life with me. but this one only has 38,000k so far & never needed topping between services.
But just because they need to be topped up does not mean they burn oil, as when the piston goes up then down its good to have a film of oil on the bore, that gets burnt but it often gets replaced with some fuel, so can still show oil full. if that happening & you go for a long run in hot weather, it is possible for the fuel thats slightly deluted in oil to burn or evaporaye. but this mostly only happens with petrol. but i think that happened a few times to me with my first i30 CRDi, but did not loose sleep over it.
cheers
