On reading (in UK) "The Victorian men, aged 42, 49 and 54" I did a double take - imagining a UK turn-of-the-century strict upbringing also thought "they'd all be dead now !"

“These guys were very poorly prepared, they had very little water with them - less than two litres each - they had no satellite phone [and] they had no UHF radios,” Constable McShane, the officer-in-charge of Birdsville police station, he said.

“They had all their gear on the bikes – fuel, water, food, camping equipment, tools, spares – so the bikes were too laden.”

Doesn't sound like they were all that unprepared.... 
Yes, they should have had some kind of radio and more water but I guess they weren't figuring on one of them suffering a back injury.

Travelling by motorcycle means you do have to compromise on the gear you can take.
