The 1.6 CRDi is still an impressive motor (for the size) and has a chain driven cam, which requires less maintenance than your belt driven one. Think your motor is based on an older design.
There is talk the next generation of i30 due out late next year (and pictured elsewhere on here) will have a choice of 3 x 1.6 ltr engines including the CRDi and a turbocharged one. I suspect one of them might be a high output direct injection model and all three should be quite economical.
While many of us CRDi lovers wish they would put one of the 2.0 or 2.2 R diesels in the i30 it doesn't look likely at this stage
