Why doesn't Hyundai build utes?

as much as i love them, utes are actually highly impractical in most circumstances. almost anything you can put into a ute would go into the back of a work van and avoid it getting wet in the rain, dusty, stolen etc.

i think this is the smallest they make:

Utes are an Australian invention, so it is unlikely that any other country would build one.  The only thing from outside Australia that I could think of would be the El Camino.

Phil i hate Vans but also don't like forward control utes like that, the sky is the limit for load hight with a ute. but in the city & as you said  when it rains, vans are good . just buggers to work on and load as you have to bend or hit your head on roof.

The name Ute may be an Australian invention - but surely the real beginnings for such vehicles was in the USA. But they called them Pick Up Trucks - now abbreviated to Trucks.

My impression is that Australia invented it by basing it on a sedan body, not a truck body.

That is my understanding, Gonz.

I call a pick-up truck either a pick-up or dual cab, whereas I own a ute.

We are all divided by a common language.

Agree Ute is a car based vehicle (invented by Australians) pickup trucks are their own design. Although I call em all Utes.

The term "ute" was an Aussie idea requested by farmers in 1932 wanting a vehicle that could go to church on Sundays and cart livestock on other days,  first came to Australia in the form of a 1934 Ford coupe utility.

Utility type vehicles have of course been around far earlier than this but were not sedan type bodies.
