I've only noticed this in the last 2-3 weeks.  I hear it first thing starting in the morning (parked under carport)  and on the odd occasion when I leave work in afternoon (parked outside).  Turbo was replaced in August last year.  Have just clocked over 200,000km  :blubber:

Taking to mechanic tomorrow but any suggestions?

I've also noticed that it takes a second attempt at times to turn it over.  Is my car dying on me?

To update on this....took to mechanic this morning and of course couldn't hear anything.  Left car there for the day and still couldn't hear anything.  I described the noise.  Said it only lasts 1-2 minutes.  Mechanic seems to think it could be the oil in the hydraulics (?) and once warmed up, it seals (?).  As it's only a brief noise, it's nothing to be concerned about but if it's ongoing, then there could be a major issue.  He said that the hydraulics would need replacing and that can be very expensive.

Suggestions on approximate cost if this is the case?

Tomorrow morning I'll try and record the noise if it'll pick up, that way he can hear exactly what it sounds like.  The other option is to leave the car there overnight so he can hear first thing in the morning when the engine is cold, but as I work in Melbourne, it's not possible.

Oil returns to the sump and in engines over time, the time to get the oil up to the valve rockers and fill crevices takes a little longer as the engine wears. Unless the noise continues when driving or idling, I'd just leave it. Just make sure that you have the correct grade of oil as too thick will be slower to reach the top of the motor.

IIRC, member @cruiserfied mentioned that he has never needed to adjust valve clearances in a Diesel engine, unless it has been stripped down of course.

You remembered correctly Phil. Although I dont remember saying it lol.

There are a few things to be concerned about if they are noisy. Lifters, timing chain, cvvt actuator all depends on where the noise is coming from.

I recorded the sound this morning, although hard to hear, you can just hear it.  How do I upload the file onto here so you can hear if there is anything?

At work, unable to do so at the moment as I don't have the program I need (it's a .wav file).

You could put it on MS Skydrive if you have an account.

The more I hear it, the more it sounds like the indicator is on.  That should give you a better idea of the noise.

Never used to hear it before though...only last month or so.

Because the car is getting older?

Maybe it has been happening, it just seems louder.
