Hi to all!!
My first post..
I work for an International Airline and my job is Weight and Balance. (Load Master to some)
just reading that front page I can't believe how many engineers there are here.
I suppose I should throw my hat into the ring too, I'm an electrical engineer.
I work as a busdriver. Perhaps not the my dream job but in these days I´m feeling lucky to have a rather safe employment. I believe people tend to go more by municipal transportation these days. Wonder why?
And I´m glad I didn´t applied to the Volvo factory, which I intended a couple of years ago.
Hey Alesand,
I am also a bus driver. That said, I have been in the job for barely a month. Loving it. Prior to that I was selling cars, Hyundai funny enough.
I was training to be a brain surgeon but they told me I was too short...
So I became a gynecologist...

What does that entail ... (using recycled material?)
While I work hard on recycling whatever I can, the real meaning is that cons. pic. framers give customers the option of using basic materials and techniques to frame their work, or, using only materials and procedures that provide the best possible long term protection for the artwork or artifact.
There is of course a cost premium to it as the archival mats and supports, the UV filtering glass or perspex, the sealing of rebates, the special hinging or 'couching' of the work in the frame, and other slower procedures, all add to the cost. Some of the older artworks also need restoration before we even frame it.
But we only recommend this for works people want to hang on to for a long time. Most of the work I get falls into this category.
Thanks for your interest!

One supermarket. Perhaps the most soul destroying place to work.
It feels like they are completely separate jobs though because they often conflict, and I work with completely different people. I get different sets of pay etc, it's all a bit weird.
And I don't fly for a job, I just threw it in there to make myself sound interesting. I'm actually a rather boring bastard, most most of money gets eaten by flying rather than multiplied.
A lot of you have enviable and interesting occupations. it's also interesting to see how one kind of car can work for people doing such varied things. That is if you use your car for work anyway. I transport stuff sometimes, one of the reasons I switched to an i30 was the space in the rear!

Seeing as I'm a new member, thought I'd post.
I'm a telecoms engineer in the UK. Not like a BT engineer, who specialise in one thing, but more like a jack of all trades. I work with Radio, Optical, Electrical, DWDM systems (not like many of you will know what that is ;))

Angel must have arrived from VAG, then. Owners spent years saying there was a problem with faulty injectors but VAG insisted no such problem existed.

(Although I'm missing the Army bit and the big ships).
Thanks guys, yes retirement is tough but someone has to do it. I did 36 years in NSW Police, retiring as a Chief Inspector, not so long ago. My last adventure on the big ships - Arcadia, Sydney to Southampton, 49 days in March/April this year. Next one, March 2014, Golden Princess - 31 days, Buenos Aires to Los Angeles. I hope I get decent economy out of my new i30, so I can save some $. :rofl:Lester, when you get to the testing stage with "The Boss" make sure she also drives the Accent.
So a few retired cops on here eh? Good to see yall driving Hyundais. Now I have to get the 'Boss' out of her Nissan Micra and into a Hyundai i20, one day! :whistler:
When you mentioned Arcadia, Lester, I thought surely this ship can't still be cruising.
I remember as a kid seeing it in port many, many times. Fremantle Harbour was somewhere I loitered a lot as I always wanted to go into the merchant navy as a navigator, 3rd officer, 2nd officer, etc etc, but it never happened.
But I was thinking of this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Arcadia_%281954%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Arcadia_%281954%29)
BTW, I did 32 years, out at Senior Sergeant level. Miss it every day  Not.
I've been a software developer for the last few years, but currently working a second job for my old boss replacing/enhancing some instrumentation systems (and software).
I thought I missed some aspects of the field work (onshore oil/gas drilling services), but it's a lot tougher with the little one at school nowadays.

I work for a company that makes Broadcast Audio / Visual electronic equipment. I'm an electro accoustic engineer and work in the repair / test department. We supply and to Sky, BBC, ITV Channel 4 and many other television and radio stations accross the world. If they need support they phone me as most companies no longer have there own engineers.
By the way, no need to fit shallow speakers in the i30. I have now fitted Pioneer TS-E1702is in the front and the slightly less expensive TS-E1702i in the back. I originaly upgraded to shallow fit speakers after reading other posts on this forum.

Lachlan85, do you intend to do anything to the sound system in your new car or leave it as is?
We'll see. From the reviews I've been reading the sound system is pretty ordinary. I don't care much for the "doof doof" systems you hear speeding down the streets, but something that gives me an honest and true sound is important. I got some good results in my old Astra just by buying a 3rd party head unit. Clarity improved, volume improved. But in these new cars with very customised interior consoles, I'm not sure how easy that is anymore. If the actual speakers are truly crap then I may look into some options to replace them. But not in any rush to start dismantling my brand new car I haven't even picked up yet!!

I know how you feel. Our 1st i30 (a 2008 manual CRDi) got a very hard life because we were building a house and moving.. I carted around a 1000 second hand bricks and lots of rolls of fence wire etc.. The hard plastics of the FD scratch quite easily. :(
About a month ago a very cute young lady was playing a harp in the street (she must have been very good or very cute because I put a coin in her container) :winker:
By night I play harp.
By night I play harp.
What kind of music do you play
One of my favourites is a chap called Thurlough O'Carolan.
He was a blind, drunkard, harpist, born in early 1700's.
I have some of his music played as a quartet Harp, Flute, Viola, Violin.
No one else in my house likes it though. :fum:
I am a Warehouse Supervisor for a mob that imports starters and alternators and auto electrical components ie: lights, switches, wire, etc. Been doing it for about 3 years. This is my third Hyundai. Had an Excel from 1998-2003 until it got stolen. Then I had an Accent from 2005-2011 until it was written off. I actually bought the first one because as I was test driving it someone reversed out of their driveway straight into the side of it as I drove past. After the initial impact the dealer looked at me and said, "How good are my test drives, bet you didn't expect that!" I had to buy one after that. Wow that is an unusual event, although someone nearly ran up the back of a GD i30 I was testing :sweating:
I enjoy fishing a lot and I fish from a kayak no matter where I go. If there's a creek, I'll fish it. That's the main reason I bought a diesel. When I go exploring I can drive for up to 4 hours to fish for a couple of hours and then turn around and come home again. I currently own 5 fishing kayaks :D after all you need one for every occasion. That's keen, so mainly fresh water then?

I do have some O'Carolan in my repertoire. I play the Clarsach or folk harp, so I play a lot of scottish and irish folk tunes. O'Carolan wrote lots of his tunes for wealthy patrons, and named them after them, like Planxty Irwin, and the like.
Great stuff, eh? :happydance:

Gday peeps, i'mma PV engineer, specialized in designing solar photovoltaic systems. Recently designed a few 100kW systems for some commercial premises, currently at the stage of installation. We just racked up a deal with IGA so you'll most likely see lot of solar panels going on top of IGA shopping centres in the coming years. I'm in the NSW department but we also have branches in QLD and VIC. Not only commercial, but we also do residential so if you looking for something to save your energy bills, I can give you some good advice or even cut you some good deals.
On my free time, i like to throw money at my GD i30, which makes my gf mad and jealous most of the time.
I used to work for Energex here in QLD (electricity distributor for SEQ) processing applications for PV installs. It's amazing how many dodgy installers were signing people up without actually applying to Energex for approval first. Quite a shock to the home owners when they've already had the system installed and we then tell them they're not allowed to connect it to the grid without contributing towards a transformer upgrade (some properties were putting in 30kW grid connected systems without getting approval to feed that much back in).

I hadn't though much about equipment to cater for feed in, I just thought it went next door @ 240 v and was consumed locally. Can you provide more detail about what actually happens to the juice and what is done to handle it.

I don't know too much about the technical side of things (I'm not a sparky ;)) but basically most of the transformers that are around (especially in older areas) weren't designed for additional power to be fed back into the grid as well. With the increase in power usage from things like air-conditioners, pool pumps etc, some of the transformers are quite close to capacity as it is. When a bunch of people in the street then start getting large solar PV systems and feeding extra electricity through the transformer it can cause issues. The transformer then has to be upgraded to a larger unit to handle the load.
It's not an issue for smaller systems, but anything over 5kW needs to go off to the network engineers for approval. They check to see what the existing transformer can handle, and if it's close to the limit then Energex will upgrade it, with some contribution from the customer. In some cases that can be up to $30,000! That's why all the paperwork is legally required to be sent in for approval BEFORE the system is installed. A lot of rural properties were setting up solar farms to take advantage of the government rebates and make a heap of money.
Well, I was made redundant 3 months ago, but have got another job again - starting next week - as a project manager, this time in energy efficiency to improve the quality of a housing association's property portfolio.

I currently work for a company called VroomVroomVroom - we run a bunch of car rental comparison websites (see http://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au (http://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au)). I do Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and digital marketing stuff in general. We have websites in AU, NZ, US, UK and Canada (will be rolling out to other countries in the near future).
In my spare time I run a few of my own websites, though I don't get to post as much as I'd like.
Top 100 Experiences (http://www.top100experiences.com.au) - things to see and do in Australia
Thrillmere (http://thrillmere.com) - my personal blog
Luke Chapman Photography (http://www.lukechapman.com.au) - some of my photography, though I don't seem to get much time anymore
Digital Growth (http://digitalgrowth.com.au) - planning to post about digital marketing for small businesses here (not much content yet)
I also have a couple of other websites in the pipeline, though they're going to have to wait due to my current workload :(
If anyone wants and photography or digital marketing/SEO advice, I'm happy to help :)

On a less contentious note, I'll be in Canberra most of next week if anyone's interested. Flying, getting a hire car, staying in a hotel, sitting a course and giving a presentation to the EW fraternity. It's about my job and it's about where I am, so the title fits. :whistler:

I always appreciate the work those who work in public service eg: police, firefighters, paramedics. Not a lot of people remember them except when things go south.
The police forces around Australia. are not happy with the internally running of the force. I have 4 family members in the force.....3 here and one in NSW and a friend who is a senior sergeant here. We have a few members on here also who could give you a lot of insight as to the going ons within the force. I for one , probably try for the paramedic......good wages and not as much violence to attend too..........

Welcome. I served 36 years in the NSW Police (1967-2003) It is a good career, with good pay and promotion prospects. Only trouble is these days, you have to pay to train, i.e. pay to be at the Goulburn Police Academy and no pay until you are sworn in as a Probationary Constable. In my opnion as a Dinosaur that is outreageous. Things are not as smooth in the Police as they were, many constraints and in house friction. All other States and Feds you get paid to train. Also the Superannuation deal these days is not as nice as the one we were/are on, but that is also relevant in many other government jobs. :blubber:
Good luck anyway. The Paramedics with NSW Ambulance Service is also a good job, I know a few, but not my cup of tea.

I think this is because of it being an online forum, it appeals quite broadly to the technologically minded folk as I have picked up the same thing on other forums. Even the adventure biking forum I belong to (bikes, not something you would commonly associate with an IT fundi) has around 60% of it's members working in IT or a similar trade, and the same can be said for the paintball forum I sometimes frequent :goodjob2:I laid a floor once, amongst other things......

I think the typical man on the street buys his car and that's it - he takes it in for services and maintenance and never thinks of the vast communities that are out there just a Google search away with a wealth of information available.

Interesting and logical explanation.. Why didn't I think of that! :head_butt:
For my day job my official title is 'Patient Services Representative' because they had no idea what to put me under.
I'm basically a Medical Receptionist / Administrator for 3 medical centres, doing accounts, sending letters, updating medical records from the National Database, calling people in when they're due for checks or injections, that takes about 2 weeks of the month, the rest of it, I spend designing our reporting system, call quality marking and training and on the very rare occasion I will jump on the phones and even take some calls
Out of Hours I do business accounts for a transport company and run my own part time businesses being Wedding Car hire andan Icecream truck

Work in a power station type thing just not a nuclear one. Homer taught me well..
I'm in IT, in a team called - Citrix Universal Network Technology ServicesI hope you're not responsible for the Citrix software used by Heart Care Australia, terrible software that's impossible to remove cleanly :disapp: the abbrieviation might have been referenced a few times when I was trying to repair citrix damaged systems :D
a proud member of the team, and never mind the abbreviation :D
Speaker for the dead. Or at least, that's the conceit I tell myself.
Funeral celebrant. Great conversation stopper or, alternatively, the prompter of lame jokes.
I recently moved across to Desktop Support for a large corporate in South Africa. Nationwide we have around 45'000 staff but we only look after about 400 of them at our main campus :goodjob:
Thanks Dazz! Indeed less travelling which is good news for my sanity, less so for my wallet seeing as our fuel price is now over AU$1.70 per litre and I now use my i30 to get to work and back...I recently moved across to Desktop Support for a large corporate in South Africa. Sounds like you are doing well Phil! I'm assuming that's much less time on the road which has to be safer from various viewpoints considering where you are. :victory:
Definitely! Especially with stuff like this on our roads [warning - crude language and a nice sounding motorcycle]:That was amusing :D In Australia our local indigenous and all their cousins would have piled out of the van and beaten the shit out of the rider.

I'm a global network manager for a sports streaming company called DAZN.
I'm a Triple Zero Emergency Service - "Fire Services Victoria" Team Leader/Dispatcher/Calltaker. I've been in the role nearly 9 years and continue to enjoy it. It's nothing like the dramatised 9-1-1 show. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7235466)

A very onerous job. Well done to you and your team.

Thanks Daz.. Whilst it can certainly be a stressful and insanely busy job on those fire days, the real applause goes to the firefighters on the ground. You guys had a few scary days in Tassie as well down in the south west.. I have an Uncle and Aunt over in Middleton so they were on high alert there for a little while.
Adz.
Still up! you must be on shift work...

I guess I'll add my addition here.
My name is iBainesy, long time driver, short time i30 owner. I currently work as a gaming supervisor in a pokies Venue (No I can't tell you any tricks on how to win on them, I can however offer you advice, and that is to not play them).
I am however looking at getting out of it, preferably something to do with Drone flying, that's where my interest is right now. I have a background in Fitting and Machining using CNC machines.
I just changed jobs this week, now a Classified Plant Mechanical Engineer on WA Mine site responsible for all cranes. Finally gave in after 3 years of them asking me to join them. Amazed the $$$$ spent on digging rocks outta the ground to be loaded onto trains and ships :crazy2:
Bump
Anyone changing jobs as we head into the new year?
Why Phil? Are you?
I've gone from doing very little to not much.. :snigger:
BTW.. only 14 posts before I hit 65,000. :crazy1:
