Last weekend visited friends near Ashton near Chester. Called into a Shell garage on the way home on the road towards junction 10 on the M56. On the forecourt was a kind gentleman in Shell uniform filling up your car for you. Takes me back years but this little touch made my day. You then paid at the counter.
It made me think of a piece of waste land in a town I think in West Yorkshire where people parked and paid a man in uniform and money satchel so much for parking. It wasn't until he never turned up one day for work so a regular motorist phoned the local council asking where the parking attendant was. It then came to light that the said land was not an official car park and nothing was known of the attendent. This had been going on for a long time he must have made a fortune.
Good job in paid by card for my fuel.

Good story. Classic!
I used to give driveway service as an after school job. :goodjob:

That was a free service Dazz. we have a few servo's that still fill you up, if you blow the horn.

I read about that a long time ago apparently he carried this out for years. Sure he had made £250k they estimated over the years he did it.

Well thought you just meant the free service we all got in 70's before the Gulf war.
Seem's the fuel rationing due to very limited supply of oil when that war was on, got them to build serve yourself bowsers , as when they tried to ration fuel, the attendants could not always stop customers filling up . now they have full control from counter. they save heaps on employe's. but gave us nothing in return.
i think anyone riding in a drive itself car won't want to have to fill the car up with fuel, forgot they will be electric :'(

It was free to the customers but someone had to pay for it... would have been early 70's when I did it ... '72 or '73
