Title: 2013 i30 - Sub and Amp Install - Head unit?
Post by: Andy H on November 18, 2013, 07:02:01
Hey guys,

I have an Amp+Sub and cable kit ready to install, but what needs to happen to the stock head unit? Will I need to buy something more capable to replace it?

Cheers in advance, I've been champing at the bit for yonks to get this thing installed! :)

Have you searched the forums? There are a few threads detailing what people have done.

Yeah, but not much luck regarding this - searched for all the right keywords, but none of it helps me make a start =\ Still researching myself though, cheers.

It's a bit hard to advise you as we have no idea of your skills regarding automotive electrics. Can you provide some info.

Thanks, and I agree - I have zero skills, really - I can do basic rewiring myself, but give me a solder, and I'll hand it straight back to you o_O

Unless you have someone to guide you, I would do some overtime and pay a professional to install it for you.

Hi Andy,

I consider myself reasonably handy but wouldn't do something like that without help from a skilled person.  :sweating:

If you detail exactly what you have got in the way of an Amp and Subwoofer and show us a photo of the head unit in your particular model someone may be able to give you some pointers though.

Phil has probably hit the nail on the head. Does the place you got the Amp and stuff from have a reasonably priced fitting service? Even if they wired it and then you mounted it to save a few bucks  :undecided:

I would do it the easy way and use one of these audio to RCA converter
JL Audio XD-CLRAIC2-SW 2-channel Speaker Wire to RCA Adapter (http://www.crutchfield.ca/JL_Audio_XD_CLRAIC2_SW_2_channel_Speaker_Wire_to_R_p/136xdclr2s.htm)
this will enable you to have sound coming from your radio into your amp for the sub
The power cable doesn't need to be connected to the radio
You can also avoid plugging the line-in wire on the radio and simply wire it to battery directly, you could put a kill switch on it allowing you ro turn off the sub when needed
all I'm saying is if you want you can do this installation without taking the radio out at all

all I need to remind you is power cable and audio cables should be ran on opposite sides of the car

Cheers fellas! And yeah - I totally agree with Phil, a professional job is the way to go  :goodjob:

Speaking of, I'm around Brisbane - anyone recommend a good place to start on getting this sorted?

Also, I'll put up some pics tonight, thanks heaps!

Hey Andy, I just had Autobarn at Slacks creek do an awesome job on my car.
I wanted to keep the stock head unit, so they did, but it now has two amps, 6 new speakers and a 12 inch kicker subwoofer in the back and it seriously rocks :D
It is not cheap, but they do a really nice and professional job and the car was not damaged in any way.
It has Pioneer splits in the front, pioneer 3 ways in the back, a kicker 4 channel sub and an alpine monoblock.

If you haven't done anything yet and live on the southside I'd be happy to show you :)
