Title: Tightening market in Oz and 6 speed CRDI
Post by: Ultralights on July 15, 2011, 12:07:26
Almost ordered a new SLX today,  but just could get the numbers to add up with the trade in they offered, so have to wait to sell my other car, which should be very soon.
anyway, they were willing to deal, and they came down a lot more than i expected.   would have been SLX with metallic paint for $24500 drive away.

is this a sign that the market is slowing, considering the economic uncertainty in OZ, and big retailers are report Huge or record drops in consumer confidence and corresponding profit downgrades?

apart from that, finally test drove the new 6 speed CRDI,   nice, loved the pull in second equal to my turbo forester! first gear is much longer than the subi, but the forester has a very short 1st gear as it doesnt have a transfer case and low range like non turbo models., and according to the new super glossy brochure, the engine puts out 5 more NM and 10 more KW.
the 6th gear is an overdrive gear, as the ratios of the first 5 are identical to the previous gearbox, just the 6th has a final drive of 0.5 , where 5th was 0.7, so like my MX5, its a 5 speed plus 1 (only use 6th on the highways and never touch it around town)
the gearbox was very easy to use, i was expecting some notchyness considering the car only has 16 km on it! and a few comments from here, but the gate positions were perfect, well for me anyway.    now, will someone buy my Forester!

Is it only the CRDi which are coming with 6 speeds now or the petrol ones too?

Edit:

Just checked out the specs on their website:

http://www.hyundai.com.au/Vehicles/i30/Specification-Range/default.aspx (http://www.hyundai.com.au/Vehicles/i30/Specification-Range/default.aspx)

Seems only the CRDis

It would seem to disagree with their brochure because the engine specs still state only 85kW which would suggest detuned. Although torque up from 255 Nm to 260 Nm.

Why would brochure be different?

yeah, just noticed on the hyundai site myself,  5 nm more as stated, but the dealer told me it was up from 85kW to 95kW.    who knows......

Did you say you have the new brochure? Are specs different there?

BTW that price is absolutely fantastic. Grab it. Which state are you in?

The new brochure is just the usual advertising stuff, how great the floor mats are, big pictures taking entire pages with only the words like "full of surprises" "inspired design inside and out"  that sort of crap.  , and a list of model vs features.  the technical specs were a separate printed sheet the dealer handed me.   oh, and i am in Sydney.

Will they give it to you for that price without the trade in. You might have been getting a better deal with the trade in included as they offer you a lesser price for the trade in.

As I said, if they give you that price WITHOUT trade in, you're laughing, so grab it.

That's a good deal m8.
With the power & Torque it's hard to really tell but i'd say there is definatly more Torque, also it's more to do with a better torque delivery as this motor feel's much happier at very low rev's seems to pull from 1,000. where as with the u motor any lower than 1,500 in some gears and they get fussed, feels to me like there is about 50% of maxium Torque @ 1,000 & about 80 to 90% of maxium Torque @ 1,500 & its a very smooth delivery. they seem to have done a fantastic Job. but i have only driven 100k's & all in traffic. but it's a joy. & what i notice most is the motor does not have to speed up when you are in traffic not useing throtle and say going up a hill it will just go up smooth at idle speed. ( this is the new U2 Motor ) where as the 5 speed will auto speed up so motor does not stall ( or what ever ) takes a while to get used to the speeding up feature, i do not mind it, but have noticed this U2 motor has a lot more Torque at very low revs. next weekend i'll know more as i'll be crossing the great deviding range and going out west about 900k round trip.

Here in USA mx-5 has different gearing as the 6th gear isn't OD. It seems to mostly be to stop drivetrain stress and not require downshift on hills...seems most mx-5 owners prefer 5-speed version and 5-speed has lower rpm in top gear at same highway speed as top gear in 6-speed  :sweating: 6-speed is like rowing a boat  and need to go into 3rd to pass 60mph but 5-speed can do it in 2nd. The auto trans 6 is geared much better without these issues.

USA is always broken  :sweating:
