Title: IT LOCKS ITSELF - IT'S MAGIC!!
Post by: Dave on September 23, 2008, 01:18:16
Always finding something new!  I got out of the I30 leaving my key on the seat.  Came back 10 minutes later and the car was locked  GRRR   So at least I had in the house my second key I had purchased for $400 and opened the car,
So as a test I stood by the car and LO, after about 5 minutes KER KLUNCK UNK  It locked itself.
So another reason that Hyundai should give us a spare fob key.
Just by the way I have had the car for 5 months and driving up through Sydney and going into shopping centrer car parks, I have never seen another i30.  Maybe the negative key attitude is cruelling sales?
It is however a wonderfull car to drive and I call it the little big car!

Hi Dave,

Thats weird Dave, that it would lock itself. :?
I mean if you leave the car unlocked, it should remain unlocked all day.  We leave ours sitting unlocked in our garage all the time. Why leaving a key in the vechile should change this makes no sense. I'd have your service department look at that.

I thought the auto-lock only occured if you unlocked the car and didn't open any doors? I might see if my car also auto-locks after 5 minutes of just sitting there.

while we're on the subject of ''auto-locking'', does everyone's HALO work? Just to recap, HALO is Hyundai's anti car-jacking system whereby when you reach 40 kph, the doors will lock automatically.  I've test-driven four i30's and not once did it go off(on).  I wonder if they've been disabled only for the test drive cars.

HALO works on my far past the 40 k's
I have noticed 2 things with the auto-lock feature
If you lock your car, and than unlock it... the car will relock itself (i think only if you dont actually open a door i didnt test that too much)
If you dont lock your door, it wont lock.. ever... tested overnight :)

Can someone try a little exercise? (Nowhere near Fergie at the mo so I can't)

Try removing the key from the ignition and leaving on the drivers seat within 2 feet of the ignition barrel. Then close the drivers door. I have a feeling it might be this proximity to the transponder that's causing the "it locks itself" issue

OK Shambles,

Have tried just that, Give it few minutes and I will get back to you with a answer.

I tried it too - remains unlocked.

I opened car.  Put key in ignition.  Switched it on, then off.  Removed key and left it on the drivers seat.  Closed door and went back in 30 minutes.  Car was still unlocked.

However, I have noticed that if I use the remote unlock button when the car is unlocked, then walk away, the car locks itself after a given time (haven't actually timed it).

Thanks Eyma & Bob.

I'll try mine tonight when I get home.

Reason for asking is that this is not the first time (or forum) that I've read this problem, and not just with an i30  :?:

Hi Guys

Not sure about the locking itself after it has been driven, but if I unlock mine but do not open a door within about 45 secs it locks itself again.

Have not tried any other experiments as I have only one plipper (just about to start the hassle of trying to get a second one, not holding out much hope from my dealer though, Arnold Shark have not got the best of reputations for after sales service!! :( )

Cheers
Brian

I've just turned Fergie on, then removed the key and left on the seat.

Will go check in 30 mins.

Brian - ask your dealership nicely about the second remote. Hyundai UK Motors Ltd classify the request as "changing the specification of the vehicle following purchase", but I had success obtaining a free one. I took my complaint to the top. If you don't get anywhere with Arnold Shark let me know and I'll give you some tips, but do read the other thread regarding help getting a second plipper :)

Well, no autolocking here. Even hung the keys over the right hand stalk.. nothing.
Title: Re: IT LOCKS ITSELF
Post by: eye30 on September 23, 2008, 18:49:55
Once unlocked and any door or hatch opened mine only locks if I press the lock symbol on remote.

If I press unlock but don't open any door or hatch the car automatically relockes after 1 minute.

Dave, need to take yours to dealers pront before it happens when the spare isn't handy.

Best advice on the thread.

I've been trying to research this phenomena and found a few googles mentioning ignition barrel door locking, on Hyundai models. Still researching...

Dave, can you try this for me please?

From a forum that needed some serious translation (hence I won't post the link here) can you go to your machine and press both the lock & unlock buttons simultaneously for a couple of seconds?

If what I interpreted is correct, and you have the ignition barrel system engaged, this will turn it off. If the poster is correct you should be greeted by a couple of flashes of the hazard lights. To re-engage, repeat the pushing thing which should show up as a single flash of the hazards.

I'm really curious about this now.

Bob: Fancy trying this on yours? It did nothing on Fergie - no response at all.
Eye30: How about you?

Disclaimer: the poster of this entry accepts no liability if your vehicle fails to respond to any further commands, after this experiment

Shambles,

Tried the two button method and got no response.

In short, ouri30 does not lock itself with or without the key left it.  And I can't activate this feature with a two button press as you describe.

The exceptiona are:

When I press the unlock button and walk away, a minute later it locks itself.  I like this feature as it locks the car even if I press the wrong button by mistake after getting out.

When I press the unlock button and fail to open a door within 30 seconds.

When I use the tailgate unlock and then close the tailgate.  (Be careful with this and don't leave your keys  in the back.)

Ok, spanner in the works here.

As above (ouri30) exactly the same.

Yet, here is an extra step, start the engine, drive up to a speed where the doors auto lock, pull over, open the drivers door whilst engine is still running, hop out, close door.

Within 2 minutes the door auto locks.

Repeated this several times.

Though if I stop the engine, start it again, drive off but at a slower speed so the doors do not auto lock, pull over, leave the engine running, open the door, get out, close the door, no auto locking.

I'll have the system looked at during the next service (Which is rapidly approaching)

Hi Folks

Just had Hyundai Customer Services on the phone who have arranged for my second plipper to be delivered to Arnold Shark in about a weeks time who will then contact me to come in for programming. :o

Only required one polite phone call to CS yesterday highlighting the issue with the emergency key activating the alarm and that these forums exist advising owners how to deal with the problem, so many many thanks to all on this and HOC forums for smoothing the path for me :D

Cheers

to deactivate the auto DOOR lock (when unlocking) go to Hyundai service center and tell them to disable alarm auto locking system (NOT- HALO system).

Suffered the indignity of the car locking itself with me on the outside
and the keys still in the ignition on the inside, last Sunday.
I was trying to find an address in a rural area so I pulled over to get
directions from a guy working in a paddock. Turned the engine off,
left the key in the ignition, closed the door and went over to speak
to him.  Spoke for a few minutes and returned to the car only
to find all doors and hatch securely deadlocked.
I had to call the wife who was about an hours drive away, and get her
to bring me a spare key. She wasn't happy.
Fortunately the guy woking in the paddock had a few beers with him and
as I waited for the wife he was happy to share some beer with me as we
discussed the qualities of the i30.

I have tried to replicate the situation (with spare key handy) but can't get it
to happen again.

Hi Russ,

I can understand the wife not being happy. (an hour away )

I reckon you were meant to meet that guy and enjoy a few beers... :D

I am a bit paranoid about that happening to me (like when I go to a garage for petrol)

I am real careful in the work van I have got at the moment. Fortunately, I cant do it in the Hybrid as it is a push button start and I just leave the key in my pocket all the time .. :D

Something similar happened to me when I first got mine.

The HALO had activated and when I stopped, opened the drivers door.

Door blew closed and all 4 doors locked but fortunately the hatch was unlocked.

Why this was unlocked I'm not sure and never bothered to find out.

Now I always take the key out

I sometimes get locked out of the car at the petrol station if I leave the key in the ignition, which I only do when the missus is in the passenger seat so luckily she can let me in. I wouldn't normally do this if on my own for security reasons but do occasionally get out to post a letter and leave the key in.  Must remember to be careful!

Turned out the wife had her spare key in her handbag in the front footwell..

Soon as she took her bag out of the car... no probs (clever eh )

once i accidentally left the keys in the car when i was getting some petrol, i went to open the passenger door to get my purse and it was locked!! oh no i thought i've done it now, the car has locked itself down. the weird part was though the drivers door was still unlocked!!
i was very thankful but it was an odd occurrence and i don't think it should have happened.

Hi.

I know this subject is further discussed that, but it is one thing that always worried me (and worries) and reading old threads, I went through this and I want to give my testimony.

I had read somewhere on this forum or another, I'm not sure, but today I took the test.

I locked the CW, I called my wife and asked her to bring the key to the phone and press the button to unlock.

Guess what! It worked!

So I could ask him to carry on the button to lock.

Nothing! It did not work!

I repeated the tests two or three times. Always with the same result.

I hope I never need it, but so at least I can try this solution.

Try it. It may be valuable in situations such as reported by the Seoul-mate and prevent the movement of someone and waiting time.

PS: I put the phone in speakerphone (handsfree function) along the hood, near the fuse box.

Regards,

carib

Unless someone can offer a lucid explanation, this suggestion that a wireless transmission can be progagated by an telephone is well... the most rediculous thing I've heard for a while. :faint:

I know that a mobile (cell) telephone does transmit by wireless but we are here talking of another wireless transmission being received directly and retransmitted. This much is almost believable due to an signal overload perhaps intermodulating the mobile phone data (this is in itself fanciful) but at the other end... the receiving phone...what will retransmit the RF signal from this mobile phone that the car receiver can accept?

The receiving "end" of a mobile phone conversation does not retransmit any RF signal that it receives (unless I'm very mistaken) but instead simply extracts the audio data, reconstructs it and blows it out the speaker. Which part of this audio (now air pressure only) will be heard by the wireless receiver in the car?

Anyone know why I'm wrong?

A question for anyone who reckons this works: How far away was the calling phone/remote fob when the test was conducted from the car?

No offence but gee some of you guys are hard heads. :o. I know both the ECU reset (and more so the unlocking procedure) seem improbable but I think the only way you can debunk either is to try them yourself!

Not much point in trying the ECU reset on our (new) CW but we will try the remote unlocking.. I would be extremely surprised if it works but I'm not going to call Carib a liar..either way (his phone might be different to ours..)

Edit: just tried the unlocking this from one end of our large house to the other but even with a concrete floor and half a dozen walls between it still unlocked without the phone .. the range of the remote is absolutely amazing  :scared: (Will try and do a proper test later today)

Yep?

When I disconnected my tuningbox, I had an awful time the first time I started Fergie up. Felt like she was hunting for air. I guessed (and maybe posted up here) that things weren't quite right. Had to clear the ECU with a battery disconnect/reconnect before I got resumed performance. Been great since.

Though WTF my post has to do with this topic is anybody's guess  :whistler:

Reminds me of an old Ford Telstar my son had. He came out to the car in the dark one night and started it, drove home and when he got there, realised he'd used the Club Lock key, not the ignition key.
But the ignition key wouldn't open the Club Lock.

Hi.

I would not comment yesterday without further testing.

Maybe even a matter of distances. Or Cell Phone.

The first test was done in the following circumstances:

I live on the top floor of a tower with 12 floors, leaving the garage under the same building.

Let's say the distance between the command and CW was 40 to 45 meters. I know that in "open field" this distance is nothing for the command to open or close the doors because the scope of this plan is much higher, but with all the barriers of walls and ceilings, it would be asking too much!

To make sure that the phone was working, and not the scope of the command, I asked for, with the phones turned off, it was locked and unlocked the car. Nothing!

Today, I called my son, about 15 km away, and actually nothing happened.

I'll do more testing so you get a chance and see what happens.

For now gets me wondering: the same distance and same obstacles, opens but does not close! Why? And with the phone off nothing happened!

Regards,

carib

Good post carib.
Re the above note, this is not unusual with radio signals. Think how your mobile can "drop out" even though you don't move from one spot. Then the signal comes back again.

A variation on this theme. A week after I first had my i30 my wife and I went on a trip. It was a very hot sunny day.

I stopped at a village corner store to buy a few things, my wife stayed in the car. I took the keys with me out of habit but didn't lock the car since she was inside.

I had been iin the store a few minutes when another customer came in and announced to the few people there that there was a car outside with the alarm going and a woman locked inside - I had not locked the car so thought it could not be mine. But it was.

The bloody car had locked itself and my wife had got hot and tried to open the door - which set the alarm off. She could not open the door or windows and was well cooked and deafened when I got there. I thus discovered that the car was equipped to lock itself.

I imagine that she would have been able to flip open the manual door lock - but she didn't think of that.

Another day of lost house points.

I have never experienced this self locking phenomena, but I don't doubt it exists and I certainly don't want it to happen to me.  This is obviously a defect with the car, has anyone returned to the dealer for an explanation and or warranty work?  I'm thinking it may be an intermittant defect in the HALO system or stray RFI.  Any thoughts?

I find that my car will lock itself 30 secs after I unlock it but don't get in or put the key in the ignition.  I'm not too sure whether it will lock itself automatically after I get out though, I will give it a go :)

Fords lock themselves after 60 secs if you press unlock on the remote and don't get in. Common feature on modern cars. Cannot explain why someone would get locked in however as the locking feature is disabled as soon as you open a door unless you press unlock while someone is still in the car and a door is not opened.

RFI is a good thought. Some, including myself have noticed certain locations interfere with the remote operation. Gave me a cold sweat the first time it happened as I thought I was locked out (and far from home). It won't work unless really close. Happens always in that same place.

I should add, it's never locked by itself though.

On more than one occasion I've accidentally hit the "open" button on my key ring when I've been within range of my car and even though the doors were already unlocked, that sets off the 30 sec relocking process. The first I'm awar eof it is  when I see the lights flash. :-[

Got caught out at Black Mountain(?) Canberra once where the various waves from the tower prevented my remote locking from working. Had to use the key in the door. Damned primitive.
