Title: Cruise control (UK)
Post by: alan2938 on August 23, 2011, 09:40:49
My car is NOT fitted with Cruise Control. ( UK )

I cannot see any use for this device in urban traffic.

On the motorways (UK) I would think that it cannot be used on most

occasions due to the density of traffic.

The only situation where I think it would be used is in night time

driving on motorways etc.. when traffic is light ?

What are your views?

I use mine a lot on A roads and motorways.

Even when there is light traffic on a motorway where it is moving at a steady speed.

I suppose what you havn't got - you don't miss - but I would never buy a car without cruise because I find at my age driving with it is less tiring

Never had it, other than on a loaned XJ6 while mine was being serviced. I can see the advantages on motorway trips (which accounts for 95% of my journeys) but as young Alan says, if it ain't there to be turned on....

I do not have it and to be honest don't want it......

I would think that a driver could become complacent and not keep their mind fully focused on what is happening around then, especially if the traffic is light.

Interesting question Alan... When I didn't have cruise I said much the same thing as you and a couple of others (BUT now we have it on both our cars I wouldn't be without it)

There are times even in our light traffic over here where it is not practical to use cruise but on longer trips it is definitely much less tiring to use it. (as AlanHo stated)

Very surprised your premium model doesn't have it Steve

Funnily enough Lester, I can often get a bit sleepy while driving but no more so when I use the Cruise

I must have misheard the dealership when I signed the deal. Pretty sure they said "do you want crews control?" and I think I replied "No thanks, I'll be steering her myself" :P

I love my cruise control.  :happydance:   I spend most of my trip to work on open road, so I find it very useful.  :Drive:  I don't use it in traffic, bu that is a very small part of my day to day driving.   :D

I use "cruise" regularly on highways and freeways and even use it cruising through towns.
Besides the benefit of letting me stretch my leg (which is a must when you have crook knees), I use it because of the amount of speed cameras that litter our roads.

Basically, these days I wouldn't be without it..... :goodjob:

Now that is possibly the most PLUS factor for having CC.

Here in UK there are lengths of roads which have average speed cameras installed.

Having CC would make sure you stay within the designated speed limit.

Some years back I was asked if I'd drive a car up to Townsville (a 2,800 kilometre drive) for a friend who had recently got a job there.
This car had cruise control and was the first time I had ever used one. Before, I could never see the point of them but after that trip I swore that if I ever bought another car, it would have to have "cruise".
This is partly the reason I bought an SLX as it has "cruise" fitted as standard......

I agree with the members that have it and like it(for some strange reason mostly Australian!!!). Last 3 vehicles have had cruise and I couldn't live without it. Great on our mostly sparsley populated roads out west (gives you a chance to relax and count the roadkill) and a must have on inner city and intra city motorways/ highways due to speed cameras.
And yes the older I get, the more I like to stretch the legs, wiggle the toes etc..
We have just finished a 3300km round trip from Brisbane up to Longreach and Winton, and return thru Charleville and Roma. First thing done after leaving town limits - turn on cruise and set at 110 kmh. much easier to concentrate on the job of driving and looking for Roos and emus, as our roads are not all that flash out there..

i like Cruise control on trips as it stops me speeding & getting caught speeding. but if the speed limit is not ridgidly enforced like it is here, i would not need it as much as i'd be driving for enjoyment. Cruise control is not good for driving for enjoyment as you just set the speed and steer.
