Title: GPS Unit
Post by: Pranav on September 12, 2011, 09:03:43
Hi Guys

If you dont want to leave those stains of the gps stand on the windshield....here is a fantastic tip.

Stick it on the in dash radio screen, and it almost looks like an indash system.

The best thing is it will come close to your fingers !! I really like the idea. Let me know if you like it too.

I would imagine the suction would distort the perspex panel over time

On second thought...  maybe not.  I tend to agree with Steve, having read elsewhere how soft that plastic is.   It was a nice idea though.    :blubber: :blubber: :blubber: :blubber:

I have got 4.3" GPS unit and it perfectly fits to the place behind the steering wheel, on the area, which is in front of an instrument panel. In fact I used to use 7" GPS in the previous years, but when its sucker fell off last winter and I failed to stick it back to the window I decided to try the smallest device (it was a present for me from Hyundai, when I bought my i30), since that time I haven't used that 7" GPS.

Can you post a photo of where you mean please Misha .. Surely you do not cover the Speedo & Tacho?

I'll do it tomorrow, probably.
Actually it covers Tacho, but this is an useless instrument for me as I have got AT (I doubt it makes any difference for MT as well) and it partly covers auto computer.

Another one of Mini's invention !

"In Car Dustbin" to take care of trash and am sure it wont damage anything this time.

Stuck some Velcro Material to the plastic bin base and it keeps stuck to the car floor.  I discovered the Velcro on the carpet is not necessary.

It is certainly helping us to make less mess.

Here is a side mirror I bought in OBI a few years ago, it is quite convenient in driving.

Thanks for the pics Meehalych, but I don't think I could put mine there cos I'm too used to looking at the tacho.

I notice that on our Australian cars on the temp gauge we just have cold & hot, whereas you get actual numbers.

moreover the petrol gauge has the numbers too  :) (I suppose it is because there are few Russians, who are familiar with English and can say for sure, what stands for all of those C, H, E and F  :D )

Pranav, that was another good idea, although I wouldn't actually need to.  I am usually the only person who rides in my car.  On the odd occasion I allow someone else to step inside it they do so in the full knowledge that if the make a mess it WILL be an end of life experience for them...  Oh and children are NEVER allowed in...

Misha...  nice idea, although one of our trusty bretheren showed me a way last year that I am quite happy with for now, it involves threading the wires under the steering wheel and through the fuse box opening...   There's a photo somewhere in the archive, but I am busy just now fixing a new CPU in a computer....  Maybe Dazz would find it to show you cos Dazz is a whizz at searching the archive...   :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

The clue for me was: "it involves threading the wires under the steering wheel and through the fuse box opening"

I don't mind attaching to the windshield, just hate wires. Ran the main cord out the side and down, pressed in between the rubber and plastic. The TMC antenne goes up, it's very thin so easily pushed in using a screwdriver. Everything comes out easy again.

Underneath it runs through the wheel console bottom, and out on the other side. When I need the GPS just plugging it in. No cord strips or anything, none permanent. Might use the fusebox, but then again would like to remove the gps some time if needed.

I my GPS mounted in the top box that has a lid, thats on top of the dash. love it! as use my GPS as speedo in this country Australia, u need to constanly monitor your speed.  & i feel taking your eye off the road too long is just as dangeriouse as speeding or more so. but thats how it is. so i think this possition is great & the GPS speedo i have easy & fast & accurate to read.
