How can I tell if I have the 90hp or 115hp model? And how do I know if I have VGT or not? I just took delivery of a brand new i30 1.6 CRDI U2 (as per VIN decoder) 6-speed last monday. My girlfriend has a 2010 i30 1.6CRDI (don't know if U2) 5-speed, and hers has a very apparent "turbo whistle" even at idle (just like our CRDi Starex). As soon as her i30 starts accelerating I can hear the turbo whistle a lot (not dentist drill sound, the good sound). Mine doesn't make that sound!!
I've also checked the forum around but couldn't find the answer I'm looking for. I took a look at the VGT / non-VGT thread posted here and saw that I have both elements from the non-VGT (intake has pancake valve) and the VGT model (turbo side has the VGT actuator).
-
Let me calm you donw. All i30's with CRDi engines (diesel engines) have VGT "engine" -> actually it's -> VGT turbocharger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_geometry_turbocharger).
Second thing. I've owned a 1.6 CRDi 90hp engine (5-speed) just till few days ago. On the 14th I picked up new i30CW, with 1.6 CRDi 115hp U2 engine (6-speed). The sound is different then in previous i30, I must tell you that. Don't know if it is because it's still new or does it just sound different, due to few changes, which have been made. And, there is no "whistle" as it was in my previous i30!
Third. Whistle. It's better not to hear it, then to hear it ;) Usually, too much whistle means, that turbo is in worse shape. I'm not saying her turbo is in bad shape, I'm just saying it's not new anymore. And the "whistle" you are talking about. You will start hearing it too soon, trust me. As far as I can remember, I couldn't hear it either, when my previous i30 was new, then after a while it just become noticeable (you could hear it quite a lot) - I've even filmed it and posted it on the forum, as I was afraid, something was wrong with the turbo. Of course nothing was wrong, sounded like that till the day I sold it and from what I've heard from mechanics and people that know those things, the sound was normal and every CRDi get's it after few km's.
But if you have doubts, take it to the dealers. But I think everything is okay ;)
-
Right. So all 6-speed 1.6 CRDi's are 115HP version. The turbo is much quieter on mine than on the old 5-speed 1.6 CRDi.
The turbo thing, I've known for quite awhile now as I also have an Audi A4 1.8T. The turbo on that you will hear only under load at about 2000RPM.
Thanks for the enlightenment on the VGT thing! VGT kicks ass! My dad's A6 3.0TDI has VGT and man you can feel the power all the way through unlike my non-VGT 1.8T.
-
Open the drivers door and you should see a sticker which gives the model and ps.
I'm not 100% sure but does the registration book give engine type?
-
Welcome to the club jfdelacruz :)
Right. So all 6-speed 1.6 CRDi's are 115HP version.
That seems to tally with what "bot" said sometime last year for your country...

Not all 6-speed i30's are 115hp, 90hp engines also have 6-speed M/T. It must be written somewhere whether it is a 90 or 115hp engine - try what eye30 said. You can take it to the dealer and they could plug it onto computer and they should be able to tell you, if there is no other way to find out..
You could go drag racing against your gf and you will see if there's a difference ;) Or you could measure acceleration 50-90 in certain gear and compare it with your gf's. But don't do it in 5th as the one in your i30 is shorter. But you have to do few tohusand to get the real picture of how it goes.
-
When you bought is it not detailed on the invoice as you will need to know to insure due to the insurance ratings.
Idea.
If you go onto an online car insurance site will it give the engine details as the rating will differ depending on the PS.
Or if uk or site in own country try by puttingg in Reg number/model

I checked the engine bay, the door sills, the invoice and even the delivery stamp, none indicate how many HP the car has. So is it unlike Audi's whereby just having the engine code you would be able to tell how many HP you have, how big the turbo is (what PSI it's running), if you're running forged crankshaft or not.....
Can't even tell if I have DPF or a diesel catalytic converter! There's no mention of if the car has or doesn't have it, anywhere!

I can't see where the VIN number gives the engine power

I thought it did  I must be mistaken.. :P

The VIN decoder tells you the Engine Type - but the Korean engine type for U2 says "N/A (yet)" and I'm hoping the same code for Czech applies to Australia.
Took delivery of my new i30 earlier this week, 6-sp manual and the Engine type is "S" so fingers crossed.. :)
Loving the car so far :)

New development!!!
I took a picture of the turbo on my 1.6 CRDi U2 and it says:
Garrett Honeywell
Made in Korea
28201-2A710 KMH
775274-0003
0GE_00730_K KIA
Now, from my research Garrett's website doesn't acknowledge that the 775274-0003 exists. But, there is a 775274-0002 which is a GTB1444VZ (VNT3). Now, according to this link http://www.garrettbulletin.com/assets/2008-2009-turbo-application2.pdf (http://www.garrettbulletin.com/assets/2008-2009-turbo-application2.pdf) I'm supposed to have 126hp. Real good if that's true, but then this link http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_KIA_U&ei=DouITrfyBOyXiAfBhOiZDw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CB4Q7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgarrett%2BGTB1444VZ%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DAAk%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D647%26prmd%3Dimvns (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_KIA_U&ei=DouITrfyBOyXiAfBhOiZDw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CB4Q7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgarrett%2BGTB1444VZ%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DAAk%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D647%26prmd%3Dimvns) states I may possibly have the 90hp version...
Translated from german (I think?)
Of this series is so far only the turbocharger, the 1.6 L 90 hp versions of known, this is a Garrett GTB1444VZ [103]
NOW on to business. I need to know where the Engine Code is so I can find out how much power my car has. This is important because in the Philippines, the i30 is marketed as having 115hp. I don't want to have been "duped"...
The Hyundai engine codes that I would want to see is D4FB or D4FD-L or D4FD.....BUT WHERE CAN I SEE THIS ENGINE CODE? It's not in the manual.

Hi John... has the official welcome wagon been round yet. I must have missed it. Anyhow, welcome aboard :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Is the engin number stamped on the block anywhere
-
I'm actually looking for that engine number. It's supposed to be on the block but I've looked twice and even took the plastic engine cover off and couldn't find it. So either it's buried in there somewhere or it's just in a spot where you don't expect it to be.

Perhaps our moderators or administrators have some clues, where are you! :happydance:

In the UK the base model 1.6 crdi - the Classic - is fitted with the 90PS engine and comes with 185/65 R15 steel wheels. Max speed is 107 mph.
The Comfort model has the 115PS engine and is fitted with 205/55 R16 alloy wheels. Max speed is 117 mph.
The Premium model has the 115PS engine and is fitted with 225/45 R17 alloy wheels. Max speed 117 mph.
So a possible way of answering the question is the wheel size - or a blast on a track to measure the maximum speed.
-
Think the best approach would be top speed, or having the dealer connect the computer, it tells right away. Depending on country, the models and engines can come in all variations. Not sure where jfdelacruz is from.
Here we have both classic with 90 and 128 hp, same for Comfort. Pretty sure mine is 90hp, delivered with 205/55 R16 and 6 speed manual.

Reaper : Not sure where you are from either so cannot relate your car spec to a particular country

From the Philippines. I don't have to go back to the dealer until 1000km free oil change! I have 1.6CRDi 6M/T with the 205/55R16 wheels (I got the black pearl wheels).
I found in my engine a D4FB engine type. I was driving my GF's i30 earlier and her car definitely feels more powerful around 1900RPM it's the old style engine (with the engine cover covering the turbo not like the new one).

Hopefully it is only because her's is "run in"...
Is she a member on here :whistler:

Nope she isn't!

Normally theres a danish flag, but I see it's replaced with a skull... might have hit something wrong in the forum profile yesterday.
Anyways it's a pretty good question about the engine and dpf, have one in mine as it's forced by law here, but not sure how to tell really. Except for the occasional regeneration.
-
If the engine number can provide the engine power, look at section 8-3, shows where to find the number, not sure if it does or not.

Nope she isn't!
Well she should be... :P My better half is :winker:

When you do let's say 2,000 km go to the highway and test it. If you can't make it to go over 180 km/h, then it's probably 90hp, if you manage to push it over 180, or 190 km/h, then it's 115hp version - my previous one stopped at 197 km/h, I've tried it with the new one only once and it went around 191 km/h. I don't want to encourage you to brake the law, but it's the easiest way.. You could also put it on the "dyno".
It's hard to compare the two i30's. It accelerates different then the previous i30. That's at least what I've noticed -> as you know, few weeks ago I sold my old i30 (originally 90hp, chip tuned to 115hp) and bought the new 1.6 CRDi 115hp engine (6 speed).
-
Speeding is no biggie around here. In fact, I went to college at 200++km/h almost everyday (to and from, when I was a bigger idiot) in my A4 on a 15KM stretch of highway which has absurdly high toll rates (so no one's usually around). Not bragging. I'm just stating what I used to do. I don't drive like that anymore.
Yes, they do accelerate differently. The old i30 has a very pronounced kick of boost around 1900RPM. Whereas in the new i30, the boost is much more smooth. Smooth is usually better, but causes the butt-dyno to feel "less" power, when there's actually more.

Exactly. In previous one, there was a "kick" from 1,900-2,500 (felt like that) and then nothing. Hard to explain, but now you can see (speedometer) how it accelerates more then you can actually feel it ;) It accelerates, as you've said, much more smooth :D and the fun stops later. That's at least how I feel. I got used to it now and kind of like it.
Haha butt-dyno, good one.
And regarding the driving.. I know what you mean, I was also a bit of an idiot before, but okay.. Luckily nothing happened (knock on wood).
-
Hi again jf :goodjob:
Have you noticed the extra kick that accim mentioned when you push the accellerator to the floor? Two stage pedal apparently  Maybe that is why your GF i30 feels quicker

Know what you mean...last year was doing 260kph on the autobahns in a hired AMG Merc and felt like I was a kid again......and I was still being passed by other cars....next time I will hire a lambo :)
-
haven't put my foot down enough to feel that "kick down" button. On my dad's A6 3.0TDI, the car has a kick down button and whenever you hit that, it downshifts like MAD and makes a run for it! as in GTFO haul-ass kind of run (all 455nM of torque on Quattro!)...
Anyway. We will see. When I hit 2000KM I will let you guys know how fast it can go ;)
-
when you go for it......add some extra air into the tyres and pick a cold still day and an almost empty fuel tank... :whistler:
