Title: 'Kickdown' feel to pedal in Manual i30
Post by: Max M4X WW on September 27, 2011, 19:24:26
Hi All,

I've had my company i30 for around 10 months now and I've covered 28,000miles(!)

One thing that has been puzzling me is the feel the accelerator pedal has if you push it hard at the end of its travel, its also like a kick-down switch. Is this just carried over from the Automatic models or it it to improve fuel economy by not allowing full power until you use the whole travel? I cant say I can really see a massive difference when pushing the pedal hard.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Max

I'm not a techi but could it be something to do with a delay within the ECU so the fuel  doesn't "flood" the engine?

I think flooding engines was from the old days when cars had carbs and no ecu's!

Type of engine 1.4 or 1.6?
air conditioning is on or off when you push the pedal?
Are you alone in the car?
When I was driving Getz 1.4 with air conditioning on the car accelerated slowly even when I was alone in it

Apologies, Its a 2010 (60plate) 1.6 CRDi.

Its a physical step in the travel of the pedal, Someone with an i30 must have the same pedal!

Thanks

I have the same thing in my MY2011 i30CW 1.6 CRDi (115hp) ;) I wrote about it in my topic yesterday. Click Here (https://www.i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=10863.msg122677#new)

It's a new "feature" with the face lift models. Didn't have it in my previous i30. I think it has something to do with the "economy" and reducing fuel consumption/CO2 and stuff like that. But I can feel a "kick" after pushing it all the way (beyond that physical "barrier"). Not that it is massive, but you can feel it. Especially in 4th and 5th gear. I guess it's okay, but have to get used to it when overtaking.

Mostly it is used in 'Speed limit' cruise control mode. When you depress the pedal fully, the car accelerates over the preset limit.

But you don't use the pedal at all when in cruise control mode!

neoto, I'm also not sure how you meant that..

Cruise control has two modes:
- 'normal' cruise control = "lowest speed limit": you press a button and the car maintains the speed. If you press the pedal 'over the current engine power', the car would accelerate.
- 'speed limit' cruise control = "highest speed limit": you set a maximum speed (e.g., 50 in cities, 130 on highway, etc...) and you use the accelerator pedal normally. However, when your speed would increase over that selected limit, the engine power is reduced. For instance, you set speed limit to 50, put it into third and floor it. The car would accelerate at full power until the 50 km/h and then 'kill' the engine to stay at 50 km/h. When you floor it over the 'kick-down' switch, the car would accelerate over the limit, but annoying warning tone (same as for the seat belts) starts beeping.

Well that's something I didn't know. Sounds really cool.

Hi guys,

I asked the salesguy, when I bought my i30cw which also has this "function".. and he said that it was just because it was the same pedal as the one used with the automatic gearbox. I've just checked the instructions, and there's nothing about this under the manual drive.

I don't think it does anything in my car. - It doesn't have cruise control (speed limit), so don't know about that. - The instructions just say that it will accelerate if stepped down more than 70%, when in that mode.

Btw, just had the car delivered monday and I'm loving it.  :D

Good weekend all.

Cheers,

Thanks, yeah better put in a "hello" in the new member forum. :)

Yeah I got the diesel 1,6 blue drive in white.

Also, I tested the kick-down on my way home a couple of times last friday, and I couldn't feel anything more to it..
