Title: i30 CW Trophy detail
Post by: Ralph1 on October 06, 2011, 10:29:46
Hi all,

I am about to complete a full detail on the Trophy, I started the other day with underneath the front, cleaning and dressing the black plastic part....came up a treat. Will move onto the rear end with the same cleaning and dressing of the black plastic, will also move onto the exhaust and muffler as well.

The rest of the car is very clean as I am particular about my cars. I just got my new DA polishing machine today and new polishes, just waiting for my order of pads to turn up. Then will use a finishing pad and final finish polish to remove the last few light swirls. After the polish it will be time for a coat of sealant and then a coat of wax.

The interior was attacked with a vucuum, and I used APC around the door edges/bottoms. Also various brushes for the vents and crevaces. The engine compartment also got a spruce up with the plastics cleaned and dressed again to make it look like new.

I also applied polish to the drivers side wheels to see if it aids in cleaning them later, it makes them look better as well.

Pics to follow when it stops raining.

cheers

Ralph

Hi Ralph

I'm into cleaning aswell.  Which sealant are you going for?  I'm using Autofinesse Toughcoat at the moment.  I tried the Jeffs kit but prefer Toughcoat.   The experts reckon that sealants are better on whites and silvers than the warmer waxes.  (Ive got the dodo light fantastic that i used on my silver but havent tried it on the white).  Just interested to see what you are using on the white as i've never had a white one til now  :goodjob2:

My car is 13 months old with 10,000ks on it. I find it relaxing to clean them.

Thank god!! another with my detailing afliction....LOL :happydance:

Currently I am using Mother's sealant, but just got some Menzerna sealant to try. Don't forget you can always put a good wax over the top.

I have also just bought some "Perl" dressing, this is supposed to be the duck's guts, will see how it goes.

cheers

Ralph, how do you clean the engine bay area?

Ralph, how do you clean the engine bay area?

I use some all purpose cleaner (APC) and microfibre cloths and elbow grease. Once it is done I use a plastic/rubber dressing to make it shine. If I get excited I use polish on all the painted areas, normally only once a year though.

The thing is, once it is clean, it's a lot easier to keep cleen.

We just came back from a 1000k road trip, so it was time to freshen up the Trophy, here is what I did:

Removed wheels ans cleaned front and back, dressed them,
Cleaned in arches, dressed them,
Removed all bugs from front,
APC'd the engine bay, then used blower vac to dry,
Washed outside with lambswool mit,
Dried with MF drying towel (these are magic),
Cleaned in door jams,
Wiped inside of windows,
Vacuumed interior (Kids did that).

And this is how it turned out.

Also can anyone confirm the Trophy model has side air bags in the front seats.

cheers

Ralph

Wow, you do a sterling job of detailing your car Ralph (put a lot of us to shame)  :-[

It is very easy to identify if you have side airbags in your seats (there is a little white tag on the seat bolster)

I thought all current i30's had a full compliment of airbags now (to get their 5 star rating)

Thanks Dazzler, when I went to buy some new seat covers I knew/thought it had 6 (steering wheel, passenger front, A pillars, and the B pillar has 2 spots where it says SRS. It has the tag on the seats, so it must have 8.

Will have to exchange the seat covers......bugger.

cheers

Think they call that 6 (The a +b is just called a curtain airbag)

I got excited and added at least 25kw to my Trophy by splashing some colour to the engine bay. Thoughts?

Is that red stuff on ye olde Beta II engine a cover or spray paint ? looks nice. :goodjob2:

As for airbags, I thought we only had 7 on our model?   Is your A/C working OK?

Mate, no rain on the east coast of NSW for 3 months, so our cars are quite clean, can you send some rain over from the Mother Country?

I was in Merry Olde England in May for 3 weeks, rained evey bloody day, the Peugeot 207 Thrify Rental Car was a big mess, had to put  into the car wash at Northampton before I handed it in at HEEFROW

Those Devon and Cornwall muddy lanes that did  it, driving to the local for a cider and a feed. :P

It's paint.

Why do you ask about the aircon??!!  It's easy to get your engine bay looking like new.

Hi Ralph, just checking on your Trophy a/c as mine is not 100% efficent.  Maybe the Koreans did not gas it properly.  But your engine bay is Mickey Mouse. :goodjob: I could eat my dinner off it. :happydance:
