Title: Clanging from rear right underneath
Post by: feldom on October 12, 2011, 11:32:45
Sounds like someone hitting a can with a spanner. It occurs when I go over a bump or when cornering but (as usual!!!) not every time. I've bounced the suspension as best I can, pulled the rear from side to side, got underneath and pulled on the exhaust but can't reproduce the noise. Will get underneath again when the rain stops. But anyone any pointers as to where I should look.
Thanks Mike

A loose tool in the spare wheel compartment?

I've heard a noise like that in both our old i30 and our newer one.. but only once or twice .. I thought it might be the exhaust (but hasn't happened for ages now)  :undecided:

I had a similar noise sometimes ago.

What it was was a bar across the exhaust pipe beneath the rear seat which had been bent upwards and when the exhaust moved, it was rubbing.

I just unscrewed, straightened it and refitted.

I posted on here and when I find it I'll link it.

Thanks for the link.
It's stopped raining (it does that sometimes in England), so I put the car on the ramps. The bar shown in your link was completely missing from my car, but I could see the holes where it could have been mounted.
I tapped the final box on the exhaust and it was exactly the sound I had been hearing. I supposed it was hitting the heat shield on the petrol tank, but why now? I checked the last suspension rubber at the end of the exhaust and reckoned that because it was only half as wide as the others the exhaust had more room to move sideways. I pushed the exhaust as far away from the heat shield as possible and fitted a jubilee clip with packing on the end of the suspension bar to keep it in position. My wife has just gone to Morrisons with instructions to listen for the clanging (from the car!)
I will try to post a picture of my mod.

Didn't read everything, but I would say it's probably the "stabilizers", if you hear "knocking" when driving over bumps. Happens quite often in i30. Nothing big, but annoying.

When you change them once, you won't have to do it again. The ones that are installed after the "first ones", should be better (the guy at the service told me that, when I had mine replaced on my previous i30).

Everything must be done under warranty of course.

I'd be getting on to the dealers to sort it out.
As accim says new rubbers should sort it out.

I think accim has cracked it  :goodjob: I took off the rear right wheel to have a better look and I got a bit of a shock when looking at the lower bolt on the anti-roll bar drop link.
Will ring the dealer first thing tomorrow.

Should be okay when you replace it. As far as I know, it doesn't cost that much to have it fixed, but you probably still have the warranty, so it must be free of charge.

Just got back from the local dealer. (Very obliging, told me to bring it in straight away). Only mentioned the clanging noise. Put it on the lift and checked all over rear suspension. Said couldn't find anything so probably the exhaust touching heat shield. So I asked about the downlink bolt almost hanging off. Said it was a ball type fitting and it does look like that when the weight is off the wheels. Anyway, on the 16 mile round trip to the dealers I didn't hear the noise at all. Might have done something when I had it jacked up with the wheel off.
Watch this space and thanks for all the help
