Title: 6 speed gearbox
Post by: bobbyd on November 10, 2011, 11:58:40
Am i correct in assuming the current build (2011) I30 is now 6 spd manual ??    If thats the case aonyone know if its the same bolt pattern as the 5 spd box?

Yes they are 6 speed now.

Pattern is with reverse to the left of 1st after lifting up a ring under the knob.

Wasn't like that always? My 6-speed is the same as previous 5-speed I had. The only difference is in knob's design (look) and the added 6th speed. The revers is where it used to be -> where the 1st gear is, just that you have to "lift" the "ring".

Do you mean where the drivetrain bolts onto the engine block?

Yes he does, anyone like to guess why he is asking

Looking to do the upgrade thing (e.g. swap to a 6 speed box) but it won't happen - not cost effective  :whistler:

ahhh you give up easily- sooner or later there will be a gearbox sitting aorund at the wreckers.  Yes I'm wanting to know if a swap is possible

I wouldn't want a gearbox from a write off in our reasonably new i30  :P

You mean the bolt patern gearbox to motor?
I could not say but i had a 08 CRDi 5 speed, now have the 2011 CRDi 6 speed & i think the 6 speed shifts nicer i think gear ratio's 1, 2 , 3 , 4 same as 5 speed but the 5th & 6th gear ratio's are different i like it!
but not sure if interchangable?

ha ham yes any 6 spd box donatino happily accepted.  I findthe 5 spd to be the main let down in an otherwise great car- 5th revs too hard for a diesel at 110kph and revers is f***ing horrible too tall in gearing- you can go quicker backward than in frist gear.  Synchro on 2nd and first isnt great requiring almost zero speed to change back to first, pratucularly when cold.  Any more feedback on the 6 spd please ????

My 6 speed diesel was notchy getting into 1st and 2nd for the first 5 to 6000 miles - but is now reasonably OK. Still not as silky smooth as the other gears - but not a problem if you hesitiate slightly in neutral.

I don't find the reverse too highly geared - seems about right to me.

Allan, i went from a 5 speed to a 6 speed, the 5 speed was worse when new but improved with age, very stiff new.
Bobby the revs only go down about 200 RPM but the 5th is more useable, the u2 motor also pulls smoother, i find were i had to use 3rd on the u motor i can use 4th on the u2, 12,000k & improves all the time but economy is about the same as the 5 speed you still have to drive for economy to get it, its not magic. cheers

This may be a reasonable project for a young i30 owner when these vehicles start to age and more used ones and wrecked ones become available, I s'pose.

But from a practical standpoint, I don't know what benefits there are. I drove a 5sp diesel manual before we decided on the diesel for our car. The 6sp works well, but not THAT well to justify all the work that would be required to change over boxes.

.....and probably after gearbox change you will have to change engine ECU too...

Yeah I wouldn't mind fitting a 6 sped into Wiggy either :)

i don't think it would be needed, as this is 6 speed manual not an Auto. the first 4 gear ratio's are same as 5 speed. i could not see why ECU would need any changes in settings.
