I was just reading the owner's manual and it has a warning not to start the car with a USB stick plugged in just in case static electricity destroys it. Does anyone leave them plugged in all the time? It sounds to me like a warning just in case the one in a million chance happens and your USB stick gets fried (a bit like labelling all chocolate bars 'may contain traces of nuts' just to cover themselves even though there are no nuts in it).
Another question. In the owner's manual, the section covering the audio mentions an SDVC option in the setup menu but it doesn't state anywhere what it is for. In the option you can turn it on or off. What is it and do I want it on or off??

middy,
Leave our USB in all the time (16Gb) and never had an issue.
SDVC is speed dependant volume control. Somewhere on heare there is more about it. It is supposed to increase and decrease the volume of the stereo related to the speed of the vehicle. Do a search for SDVC and you should find it.

Thanks for that. Duh! I should have searched the forum first shouldn't I? As for the USB stick I might try leaving mine in because it would be a pain to have to keep remembering to remove it every time I start the car. I will also have to buy a larger memory stick as the 512 MB one that came with the car probably won't hold much.

Mine is left in all the time, although I do tend to listen to radio mostly so the stick is not generally being read during start-up and switch off.
I would guess that starting the car is probably the point where damage is most likely to occur due to the stick getting power on ACC then draining as the power is diverted to start the car.
My tuppence anyway
Cheers

I leave mine in all the time, except for updates :?

Mine stays plugged in and on USB all the time, and never had a quibble with it!
-
Yep, leave mine in all the time unless my phone needs charging (i dont have a cigarette lighter charger but I have a USB cable that charges the phone)

Mine is left in.
Aside from being a sysadmin I am also a part electronics engineer, and the USB system in the i30 SHOULD have the standard power surge protection built in. They warning is something that you'll find is there for those rare occasions that power surges may get through.

I always wondered what the SDVC setting was for. Fantastic! Now when my partner is talking loudly I can turn the volume up and say "that's the SDVC kicking in".

from my experience: I had a cheap usb once, it got....f*ck3d up, probably because it was a no name
since then i have been using an 8GB corsais voyager, it's great and had no problems what so ever! i never turn of the stereo,i have been trying to do so but i forget quite often.

I leave my 30GB iPod Classic in all of the time. Turns itself ON sometimes, but I haven't had a lot of problems. If anything happens I can just reset the iPot and reload 25GB music...
