Title: i30 or i40?
Post by: Doggie 1 on January 09, 2012, 09:54:15
I know this has been discussed before, but I went into a Hyundai dealership today to ask when the new i30 would be arriving and he said during the second quarter, between April & June, although they have no information on pricing or specifications yet.
I'm actually a bit interested in the i40 wagon too but in the base model because it seems to be the only one that is available in diesel manual in Australia. Am I right in saying that?
Looking at the specification on the Hyundai website, I probably wouldn't be missing out on too much over what I have in the i30 SLX but would pick up some extra bits & pieces too.
Fog lamps is one thing missing in the Active, chrome-look interior door handles, auto climate control (the main thing) & glovebox cooling (I've never used it).
The economy from the 1.7 6-speed manual is listed as the same as my i30 - 4.7 l/100 kms.
Does anyone on here have any practical experience of the i40?
Still not sure which way to go but as the kms rise on my i30 the value declines........
Dave

Have you driven one yet Dave? As I said in my test drive thread the driving position and ambience of the cabin is superb  :goodjob: Don't buy a diesel i40 i will be super jealous  :undecided:

The Active is under tired though... If we end up with one in a year or two I would sell the 16" wheels and tyres and look for a 17" wheel and tyre package... :happydance:

No, haven't driven one yet Dazz.
Good point about it being under tired though - although we'll probably cancel each other out cos I'm always over-tired
Now, where do I find your test drive thread again? I do seem to recall reading it at one stage but would like another look........what section is it in?
I do wish it was possible to get at least the mid model though in diesel manual. I don't know why Hyundai play around with the specs available like they do.

Dave

You are right only the active Petrol and Diesel come as a Manual.

The Auto is a semi auto but I would prefer the manual too ..

I will find that test drive thread and edit this post to include it  :goodjob:

That was a good read, thanks.
I think I'd probably be happy with missing out on a few things with the base model, just  to get the diesel manual. Plus it's cheaper.
Interesting comment re the rear view camera though.
I'll have to go and have a good look at one.

I took an i40 for a test drive last year while I was getting the 30,000k service done on my i30.

It was the mid range model with diesel and auto. Very nice to drive and although my drive was only short I came away quite impressed.
I had the salewoman sitting alongside me so I couldn't give it too much stick but I did push it reasonably hard through some corners and found it up to scratch, especially considering it's a wagon.

Verdict....I want one.... :goodjob2:

i40 :) this will be my next car, or Veloster.

Was in a test drive in an i40 the other day. such a smooth car, comfy and just gorgeous.
The girl test driving was used to a 1.9tdi audi A3, and was very very impressed, think she's putting an order in.

Just proves how well Hyundai are coming up in the world, with Audi drivers are going into Hyundais :)

Hyundai i30 will be launched march 5th in the UK

think i saw an i40 yesturday thought at first it was a Big Honda Wagon but noticed the Hyundai grill badge looked ok if you like Honda Odessy style. i think it would be too big to be fun. i drive enough big cars now. i like small cars as more fun to drive. try turning one around in a tight spot quick.
Dave my i30 has 4.5L/100k sticker on window the old 5 speed was 4.7/100k but i'm averaging 5.1L/100k i think a car that size would average 6L/100k but full loaded who knows?
if i was looking i'd ask for a full days test drive, only way to really get an idea. but love Diesel if new i30 has a bigger diesel motor i'll get one :happydance: filled up yesturday diesel $1.50, E10 $1.49, 95 Octain $1.59, 98 Octaine $1.64 if i had petrol i would be runing on 98 Octain as keeps motor clean but at that price and diesel economy way out infront.

The i40 is very light to manouevre :) has the EPS (Electronic Power steering) same as the i30, yet its even lighter yet again. Pure joy : )

I average around 6 in my auto CW, but I spend a lot of time at 120 km/h. I think the 6 speed auto and slightly bigger engine in the I40 would equal lower rpm at that speed, and at least equal the economy.

That said, my luggage requirements will only get less once the young bloke outgrows his stroller so the extra room in the back probably won't be a big issue.

One would think the new I30 diesel will need to shave at least 10% of the current economy figures to a) be able to boast that it is new and improved and b) to slide in below the I40 (it would be embarrassing for the bigger car to have the same or better economy. So I suspect this will mean a 6 speed auto, the diesel engine is already producing 94kw in the accent, so I expect this will be the minimum for the I30.

I guess it would all depend on how much you could get an I40 for, and how long you will have to wait for a 2012 spec CW.

i'm sure steering is light i'm old so remember what it was like b4 power steering so all cars & truck have light steering. what i'm saying is as it is longer wheelbase i would expect it to take a larger turning circle?
so hence not as quick to turn around

You might not think there is much, but allow total length of car & a falcon turns in about same turning circle as that. when you get used to a falcon then switch to an i30 you notice how much easier. also longer length is harder to park. but i'm used to parking trucks in sydney. one truck is a lot longer than the other and i notice it big time! but the longer truck rides better so i would expect the i40 to ride better than the i30 & probably be more stable in sweeping corners at high speed.  but i think if i was going to that size i would buy a i45 as look nicer to me. the i30 suits me fine.

Reckon the new model CW is probably at least 6 months further away than the 2012 hatch so might not see one until 2013

You might not think there is much, but allow....
The light steering maybe just makes it feel that way, I understand were your coming from Lakes. POssibly why they have made the steering feel so easy, to reduce the strain of having to manoeuvre a large vehicle

The i40 didn't feel any bigger or more cumbersome than my Hybrid which also has a fairly good turning circle and nice steering for a big car... :goodjob:

I called in to my local dealership today (where I bought my i30 from) to look at an i40. They had a white base model diesel manual demo there but I wasn't offered a drive and I didn't ask for one.
They didn't seem particularly interested in selling one to be honest. He said they are hard to get hold of and they are selling all they can get without effort.
When I mentioned perhaps trading in one of my performance cars (GT) as well it seemed to turn him off completely and he said, "We're not really interested in those types of cars and we'd probably only be able to give you a third of what it's really worth."
When I first walked in, no one got up to come to talk to me although they saw me walk in. I had to ask the receptionist to get someone for me to speak to. There was no offer to come and look at my car, no offer of a drive of theirs.
I'll probably try another dealership (John Hughes probably) to see what response I get. It was 4.00 pm and I think he was only interested in going home.
It didn't inspire confidence but then they didn't last time either when I bought the i30.
Whatever happened to good old fashioned service?

:whsaid: Really is a shame, I wonder how HY Aus, would react if you told them one of their dealers weren't doing much to assist the sale of the brand?

Get to another dealer and let them know the bother you have with the initial dealer, and just watch how frantic they are to help you and win you over :)

Yes, good idea.
This is the same dealer I had issues with at the first service on my i30. I watched them do nothing other than lift the bonnet & fill out the book, then when they realized they'd been sprung they got rather aggressive.
An easy way to pick up the "free service" fees from Hyundai for doing absolutely nothing I guess.

They sound rather incompetent to be honest. Surprise they havent got a back log of complaints. Shows how strong the brand is personally to you, that you still have the car, and haven't changed allegiance!  :goodjob:

Do everyone a favour and pass on your experience to Hy Oz. Dealerships like that need their arses kicked. That is simply poor salesmanship and the dealer principal should get  boned from Hy Oz IMO.  :fum:

The i40 has more turns lock to lock than the i30 so this just means less direct & lighter steering but i prefer more direct heavier steering as i can feel when i'm loosing traction or control. if you ever drove the old power steering cars they had very very light steering but no feel at all. but everyone is different. some think i30 don't steer well but i'm used to my i30 & have no problem with it.

Hi Dave, just reading your experience with Hy dealer. sounds like one to avoid.
in carsguide in last weekends paper. they had a comparition VW?? wagon ( larger than golf? ) & Hyundai i40 the VW won but only just & the price was about same for i40 as was for VW. i think they had $45,000 ? VW seem to be going well here in Sydney judging by the number on the roads. they also just opened up a new very large factory in Sydney too.but don't ask me what its used for?
personaly i'll never own another new VW.

I wouldn't be going back to that dealership again.

They would have lost my custom forever, even if they did offer the best VFM in town.

We bought a fairly schmick 2002 Elantra with 17" alloys and a bodykit etc which we only ended up keeping about 3 months in 2007/2008. The Saleman was full of sh1t and we ended up finding lots of silly faults with it which were not attended to very promptly or effectively. I sent a scathing letter of complaint to the Owner/Manager of the Honda Dealership where I got it from but never heard a peep (I wonder if it ever got to him?)

Back on topic..

I/we have mostly had small to medium cars over the years (driven predominantly by fuel economy concerns but also because they are generally more fun to drive)

However, as I/We have got older the ride and comfort afforded by a slightly larger car is more appealing and our Hybrid and the i40 Diesel still offer small car economy with a reasonably spirited driving experience  :happydance:

I called in to John Hughes Hyundai today and honestly, I know people have mixed opinions about dealers etc but the difference from the other dealership was like chalk and cheese.
As soon as you walk in you have service from the first person you speak to and they don't leave you until they've introduced you to the person you need to speak to.
It's what J.H. expects & demands, I know, which is why they do it cos they value their jobs, but the contrast was unbelievable. Nothing was too much trouble.
Having said that, I looked at a base model i40 (Active) diesel auto demo (they don't have a manual in stock) but couldn't drive it because someone had gone walkabout with the keys and it was locked, but they had another new unlocked one there that I had a good look at. I really like it, and I like the idea of the 6 speed manual.
I tried really hard not to look at the top-of-the-range Premium on the showroom floor.
But I did.
I stopped and bought a Lotto ticket on the way home.

Glad you've had a good experience at last db08 :)

Hope you will be back to this dealer in the near future :P

you will need to test drive the i40 for it to 'sell the car' to you. The drive is so much nicer than the i30, and the i30 is a great driving car as it is.

The premium spec is unreal, however the active  is very well spec'd also.

Hope your future experience is good :)

Auto only, 7.5 LPH with 55 Litre tank (that's part of the problem...) :disapp:

actually only 2 litres (officially)

I called in to another dealership yesterday and finally managed to get hold of an i40 brochure (they are an endangered species I think).
I still haven't driven one but hope to do so, possibly this week sometime.
I also picked up the latest copy of EcoCar magazine and they had a (very) small feature on the introduction of the new i30 at the Brussels Car Show.
Personally, I don't like the colour of the car they featured (it looked very seventies to me) but the more I think about it, the more I'm probably leaning towards the i40.
One, because the fuel economy is similar to the i30 anyway and two, because although the girls have grown up and left home (do they ever, really??) which allowed me to downsize to the i30 in the first place, one of them is now producing grandkids (three at last count  :undecided:) and all three are in baby/child seats, so the bit of extra width of the i40 would be useful as we could leave the seats in place for when needed. It's a real pain putting child seats in & out. Especially with my back.
Plus there's the bit of extra room in the back too........
I was quite decided that if I do change to an i40 I'd get the (base) Active model with 1.7 Crdi, 6 speed manual..........but then, what always happens, I started thinking.
Perhaps an auto might be nice now. And I do like those "bending, dynamic driving lights," and also the Premium has leather. And nicer (18") wheels, HID headlights, premium sound.....etc, etc. The Premium even has ventilated seats that blow air underneath you while you drive. I've always had to do that myself in the past, now they do it for you.
I don't think I'll be very popular though (what's new?), and the Active would do.  :undecided:
Life wasn't meant to be easy.  :'(

I guess your final decision will be partly decided by your budget at the time. THere would be a good 10k + between those two choices.. If the Auto wasn't much thirstier than the manual I could live with that too after the CVT in the Hybrid...

:disapp: Just had a look on the Hyundai Site.. .9LPH thirstier overall for the Auto and even more in Urban areas  :whistler:

6.0 l/100 kms for the Elite & Premium diesel auto.

It is disappointing because the i45 Auto is the same as the manual I think 7.9 LPH

We get two baby seats in the back of my CW with ease. Wouldn't want to sit in the middle, but I wouldn't want to sit in the middle of the falcon with 2 baby seats either.

Trish could fit three baby seats in the back of her Tiida Sedan and when we got the CW we established it was a couple of inches wider in the back so she has no trouble at all carting the three Grandkids 5,4 & 3 in the back...

I was cruising down the M40 motorway yesterday and a white i40 slowly over-took me. It is the first time I have seen one on the road.

It is a very handsome car and looks much wider and lower than I expected - however I didn't think that the colour white quite suited it.

All the colours on offer are mica except "creamy white." They even have a white mica.
They show a photo in the brochure of one in crystal white but according to the specs they don't offer that colour in the i40 in Australia.

I took an i40 for a drive today - base model (Active) diesel auto. I liked it.
I also had my i30 valued whilst there. The salesman & valuer couldn't believe the condition, they really were impressed, liked the leather & sunroof and all that.
Then offered me, wait for it....................................
$11,000!
Just as I said, "You've got to be joking," and got up to walk out, they raised it immediately.
By the time I left there they were up to, "If we give you $15,000 + $2,000 off the price of a new i40 (I'm eligible for a fleet discount), will you sign a deal today" scenario.
I didn't. But they are going to call me back. That's a $21,500 change-over.
Very interesting. I don't think there is much more in it to be honest, but you never know  :)
There isn't a diesel manual Active in Western Australia anyway so they said it would have to be ordered ex South Korea and would be several weeks until delivery.

Tell us more  :D  What's it like.. Nudge Nudge, Wink wink  :whistler: Pros and cons?

Did it feel quick, how did each feature compare with i30 CRDi (go, stop, turn, ride)
Title: Re: i30 or i40?
Post by: Doggie 1 on January 23, 2012, 08:58:23
It was an auto that I drove, but very smooth, nice gear changes and responsive engine despite very few kms on it. Quieter than the i30, felt more refined overall.
I wasn't even able to take it up to 100 km/h - I tried (on Tonkin Hwy, you know it Dazz) but there was too much traffic.
So it was really just a cruise around the suburbs for a few kilometres and any new car is going to feel good in those conditions so I don't feel qualified to comment too much.
I really would have liked to drive a manual but there aren't any to drive so I'll have to use my imagination there.
I have to say though, that for a "base" model, the Active is really nicely appointed.
The interior trims on the doors & dashboard are described in the brochures as painted, as opposed to the brushed alloy effect of the Elite & Premium, but I thought it looked really quite classy, as were the rest of the interior fittings.
It's manual A/C as opposed to climate control in my SLX but really, it makes little difference - just a different way of controlling the temp.
The park brake wouldn't look out of place in a child's pedal car - it is so small, but incorporates the Hill Start Assist Control for those who can't drive  :D
The DRLs are handy, as are the dusk-sensing headlights, but no rain-sensing wipers on the Active.
The whole interior & exterior though look classy and a nice place to be.
I asked about 17" or 18" rims & tyres as opposed to the Active's 16" but the salesman said not to bother as Hyundai charge the earth for them and better off to go after-market.
Other stuff on the top models, such as rear privacy glass, I'd get done after-market too.
Dave

I know over in the UK aftermarket wheels/mags/alloys/rims can void warranty, if the dealer is really fussy! Due to the offset, weight, and any other excuse the dealer can come up  with.

But sounds a very positive experience you've had, and love how they increased their trade in price for you.

Maybe twisting a free service? or reduce service plan, nice tank of fuel and some mats wouldn't be a bad bargaining tool. Any accessories and service stuff doesn't come off the sales profit, so would allow them to use profit margins from other areas, after sales/service or accessories etc, to help sweeten the deal.

Good thinking.
Also interesting, was the fact that they said, "Oh, you put a sunroof in, so you've voided your warranty on anything to do with the structural integrity of the vehicle, panels and paint."
Mm. Not that it's an issue, but interesting how they think.

This link is interesting too.

Surely not, as dealers can offer it too, but if your paint started flaking around the roof, it would be up the sunroof fitter to cover it, due to his work?

Growing to like the new i30, initially didn't like it all.

That's true Dazz, I'm sure it would be possible.
And I agree, the old model does look dated when side by side, doesn't it?
At this stage I'm just looking at all options and I have to say that I really like the look of the new i30 in red. I know the issues with red paint in the Australian sun but I always keep a good coat of polish on it anyway so shouldn't be an issue
I wonder how I'd go putting in an order now, sorting out the trade-in price etc and then choosing the spec & colour once they are officially announced?
Could be a bit difficult I guess.
I'm just thinking that if there was an i40 sedan available in Australia I'd go for that, but there's not. But in an i30 I should get higher spec for less money (it's the Scottish blood in me  :))

Russ, No trade makes a lot of difference .. :whistler:

Not to the total price.....

Do the sums, $21,500 + $15,000 + $2,000 = $38500

The price I got was $37,500 or thereabouts.....  :whistler:

We always pay a premium in W.A. when on-road costs are taken into account because our state government needs our help more.
Queensland seem to have the cheapest cars from what I've seen.

A couple of grand which makes transporting it over not worthwhile but a flight to Qld & a drive back worth considering if you feel like a holiday.
Our local car industry is (still) lobbying the state govt to reduce stamp duties on new cars which unfortunately aren't on a pro-rata sliding scale, just a linear sliding scale.
So once a car price goes over a particular threshold, you pay the higher % rate on ALL of the purchase price, not just on the part that is over the threshold if that makes sense.

Doesn't seem to be all that much in it if this site and it's on road prices are any indication....... :undecided:

As far as I know they are dropped off here at Fremantle.
But we don't get a discount off the RRP for that.
It's the govt charges that make the difference.

Prices I've seen on Carsales indicate cheaper prices in Qld and certainly common thought in WA is that that is the case.

Here is a pic of the 2012 i30 in RED

I like the fact that it has horizontal lights and not vertical, personally.

Think the red looks great, same reason as before, the tail light clusters, rear fog/reflectors in the bumper blend in. A red film tint on the reversing/indicator units would be the icing on the cake.:)

Yes, I think I'd be happy with one of these in the garage.
The one I've got now gets a lot of use but with this model, I don't think I'd ever be out of it.

:whsaid: those lightweight version models (the girl btw) are the most expensive in the range. No expense spared, and no expenses left afterwards.

You also dont get a 5 year warranty if something goes wrong with the other model. If it goes wrong. IT WILL BE YOUR FAULT, not the manufacturers

One bonus is that they need servicing more often than every 12 months...... :goodjob:

The main problem I find is that they tend to suffer from an irritating rattle at the slightest bump in life's road. :fum:

Ah, Copenhagen.

To bring this thread back on topic  I went back to J.H. today and asked, if I am happy to wait, rather than get an i40, would they trade & do the deal now & I'd wait for the new i30 to arrive.
Initially he said probably not, but then said yes, but there was a guy from Hyundai (company) there at the time and he said that although pricing & spec hasn't been announced, he expects the base model to sell somewhere between $27990 and $29990.

If that is true, that is one hell of a big jump in price.

Bump  :D

I did some car shopping on Carsales.com this morning and there are only 2 x manual i40 Diesels available in the whole of Australia (well on there anyway) no wonder I am struggling to get a test drive of one  :disapp:

I note that the overall ADR fuel rating for the 6 speed Auto Diesel is only 5.6 LPH (still impressive) and not much difference in listed price between Manual and Auto (due to availability I assume)

The worst part of them being so scarce is that it make getting a good deal when the time comes that much harder  :undecided:

Maybe, but one dealership I went to was happy to negotiate on an i40 wagon and said that I'd have to wait for one to be ordered as there were none available.

With the demise of the CW :disapp: I too will be looking to the i40 in 2015 when my lease expires. Unless I go cheap and get the accent diesel.

Lucky for me, I'm lazy and like a slush box, and looking at carsales there are plenty on there  :goodjob:
