Title: oil & filter change
Post by: brian1726 on February 01, 2012, 12:57:20
My I30 has done 37,500km,so to nice to it I changed the oil& filter.
Last time I did this I put in castrol 15-40.
This time I put in Penrite 5-40 & the car sounds alot quieter at start
up & seems to run sweeter with the lighter oil.
Just wondering if anybody else has had this happen...
cheers...
Brian. :D

Hi Brian,
From what little you tell us about the oil used each time I suspect the 15-40 was not a good oil and you didn't do the car a favour that time. It is too thick and if it wasn't an ACEA B4 oil, also outside of warranty requirements.  15-40 sounds like a specification for mineral oil.  :faint: :scared:

Same goes for the Penrite regarding the B4 spec. Were either of them ACEA B4 oil by the label?

Agree with Pip.

15W40 is not the right oil for your CRDi engine.

One thing you must never think; "I will save a few $", is regarding the oil. Buy the best oil you can get!

Mine is with DPF, so I must use ACEA C3 oil. I use Castrol 5W30, but I live in colder conditions than you.

Yep...I made a big boo boo with the castrol 15-40 but now I  know  better...
I asked a few people who have diesel's & they said it was fine.
The oil was pretty black when I bought it & the dealer said the i30 had
just had the 30,000km service...which I think was crap.
That is why I decided to change the oil & filter.
On a better note, the Penrite 5-40 has b4 in the label...
cheers...
