Title: Multi Surface Phone Mount
Post by: Mad Dog on March 03, 2012, 19:33:45
I am looking for a phone mount that needs no fitting i.e. no use of screws, nails, glue, drilling, or plastic explosive.

I usually have a windscreen mounted one but they leave rings and fall off every few months ... I wondered if anyone had tried one of these multi-surface ones (link below) or could recommend something else?

I have started using a beanbag dash mount, I find it really stable and the whole thing can be removed from view very quickly! :goodjob:

I am having trouble imagining that - do you have a picture, or a link? Thanks.

Ah - I see (said the blind man ...) so I would need a phone mount and a beanbag.

I guess you just use your existing mount with the Beanbag  :goodjob2:

If the phone isn't comfortable in the beanbag, perhaps you could try a hammock mount. :happydance:

Why not use a disc mounted on the dashboard

My old one has lost it's suck, I think it's pad has gotten hard in the sun ...

AlanHo - thanks but one of the key requirements was no glue, I am definitely no engineer and the car is two weeks old and needs to keep it's looks for a year or two  :whistler:

Anyone tried the basic vent clip ones? Not the ones that warp the dash though ...

Mad Dog: sorry to revive a slightly old thread, but I got lost in that section of the postings about surface-mounted girlfriends and their suction qualities if left out in the sun for too long. Though that may just be an Australian problem.

Thing is, our TomTom has run out of coal (it was an early model) and we're buying a Garmin satnav. We don't want to windscreen mount and we're clueless about rings and panels and mats and beanbags and scaffolding etc. We'd really like to be able to mount simply. Which I know may well be misunderstood but anyway.

Question: did you buy the eBay item you highlighted? Mounting without adhesive -- i.e., using suction only -- is our preference, too.

God. I'm beginning to wish I'd never written this. But it is a genuine, serious, enquiry.  :-[

I benefited from Alan's help and advise and am very happy with his recommendation.....   disk stuck to the dash with adhesive which can be hairdryer ed off at a latter day, if the need arises.

My two cents worth  :goodjob:

Flyyte, I don't know if this will be of any help to you but this thread shows how I mounted my GPS in the dash cubby hole. PM me if you need any questions answered.

I notice that Fflyte is in the Lake District which means he's in the UK ergo, I don't think he will have a cubby, I don't otherwise I would have copied your example....   !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the delay in replying, the short answer is No. I only need Sat Nav very occasionally and have been 'getting by' by balancing it in the tray down by the USB/Power sockets. It's far from ideal there - fine once it has satellites and the voice is OK. You have to glance down if you need visual clues but it doesn't scar the dashboard or attract unwelcome visitors.

I have just bought a new Garmin and they come with a small disc which has an adhesive on one side for the dash allowing you to use the suction without windscreen mounting.  This allows you to remove the device and leaves only the wee disc in place on your dash.  As stated before removal of the sticky would require a little heating from a hair dryer.

Big thank you to asathorny / ugly mongrel / mad dog / bumpkin  for all your help, indispensible as usual. Our Garmin has still to arrive, if it gets lost in the post that'll be one mightily unimpressive satnav. But I'll look out for the adhesive mount when opening the box and see how we manage from there (thanks bumpkin for that5: I'd no idea the unit would come with that.) Oh, re the 'cubby' -- asathorny is right: sadly, our UK spec i30 doesn't have anywhere in the dashboard to store away an Australian girlfriend.  :'(

If you don't wanna go the stick on dash mount, maybe one of these would suit you?  :undecided:

Now that does look interesting Rusty.  The only draw back I see with that is, the actual device itself might be of interest to the brain dead drongos who break into cars.   With my setup (thanks to Alan) I just chuck a pack of tissues over the sticky backed disk when I park so there is no sign whatsoever to give clues...

Does look interesting tho were it not for the aforementioned  :blubber: :blubber: :blubber:

You can remove it, Asa.....or so it says in the blurb.....

Quote
The universal dashboard mount allows you to keep your windshield clear by mounting your GPS or phone on the dashboard of your vehicle. Non-skid backing ensures the mount stays firmly in place. And, it can easily be stowed away leaving no signs of a GPS or phone in the car. Compatible with most GPS and phone products and fits most cars.

The possible problem I see with that mount is that it appears to hold the sat-nav at quite a "laid-back" angle. My sat-nav sits on top of the dash and the screen is almost vertical for best viewing.

It should be more upright if placed in the other slot....

That looks like the kind of thing I wanted. Can't see a UK seller though ... don't like playing tag with customs.

I have a Garmin with the power cable socket integrated into the socket mounting clip which restricts the adjustment with dash mounting the original sucker mount..

Until I found this

http://www.suntekstore.com/goods-10011445-suction_cup_car_mount_gps_holder_for_garmin_nuvi_gps.html (http://www.suntekstore.com/goods-10011445-suction_cup_car_mount_gps_holder_for_garmin_nuvi_gps.html)

This mount is 'suckered' to a  60mm glass disc stuck on top of the dash with double sided tape and allows the sat nav to swivel perfectly to a vertical position and rest on the dash thereby  supporting its weight.

I've ordered two more as spares....£2.08 can't be a bad price including postage!

Phone mount?  I  use  small magnetic mounts which have a small oval disc stuck to the back of the phone.  I have several versions, collected over several years, that adjust to different contours and others that are just flat backed.  Even use them in the house for mains charging.
