Title: Surferdude Trev's Past Car Pics.
Post by: Surferdude on March 06, 2012, 09:27:50
So, thanks to Dazz for the idea.

My first car was a 48/215 (FX) Holden circa 1952, bought in 1966.
The surfboard is my second one, bought after I started full time work.

The Holden made way for a 1962 (and a half) Beetle.
This is outside the motel in Yamba where my first wife and I spent our honeymoon.

We traded it on an brand new Renault 10 (1968) and it was basically the car which introduced me to motor sport. And probably was the first car which REALLY got me interested in cars. As a consequence I bought the little Renault Dauphine so we became a 2 car family.

Next came a Renault 12 in 1971 and this was taken in 1972 when we were on our way to winning an all nighter.

I was interested enough to buy an Dauphine Gordini as a dedicated rally car. It "sort of" fell over during a training run and ended up looking like this.

So I bought another body shell and transferred all the good bits into it. Here it is in a rally outside of Ipswich somewhere near the Swanbank Power Station. Working on this was how I started to learn a bit about cars.

Meanwhile, the R12 had an accident in a motorkhana. Then after some hurried repairs we competed at Mount Cotton Hillclimb.

To be continued.................................

Hey, bring on chapter 2  :goodjob2:
And just how did you get the colour into the photographs? Modern technology?

Great memories Trev.
I love those old Renault 12's, nearly traded my Holden HR station in on one in 1978 but didn't in the end.
Ended up getting a new XC Falcon ute instead.  :)

 I know, a bit random, but we do some silly things when young.
As it happened, we only kept the ute for 18 months then traded it on an almost new XC wagon, because baby number one came along making the ute somewhat unviable.  :)

haha. I had it saved in my downloads for some reason. Couldn't remember where I got it so thought I'd give it a run. But it doesn't.  :-[
It's only a fill in while I come up with something "novel" anyway. :whistler:

OK. So where were we?

Oh yeah. Renault 12 fell over........... :-[

A mate and I bought a Renault R8 to rally. Here it is during sorting.

I also bought a Mini Cooper with a full (one piece) fibreglass front to use in motorkhanas. Won a few trophies with this one. The roof rack was to carry the four spare wheels to an event - Two winter treads for the front and two bald (buffed for retreading and fitted to rims) for the rear. Here it is competing in a sprint event. The white fibregalss is a replacement for the one I forgot to put the pins in after checking the water then driving off - and over the full front :-[ :disapp:

Around about that time I got to compete in the Total Oil Economy Run, a 4 day event from Sydney to Melbourne via the Snowy Mountains (and Bright ). This Mazda 323 was entered by Joe Camilleri, owner of Grand Prix Mazda at Chermside (still is today with his sons and also at Caboolture). I was the navigator but each nav had to drive at least 1/3 of each day's distance.

You've probably all seen pics of my Datsun rally car. In fact there were two body shells with different regos but they were otherwise the same.
I also had a Datsun P510 (1600) SSS which I bought to use the body for a new rally car, but when I stripped it down it was so straight and clean I couldn't do it so I just rebuilt it as a road car for my wife (at the time). I replaced that with a Bluebird (still looking for a pic - I suspect I may not have one but if I find one of it or the SSS, I'll add them at the end of this topic.

I dabbled in speedway for a while with a guy who worked for me at Goodyear Wynnum. We used an HR Holden for that. This pic was taken after it's first race.

Got to drive this in a couple of races at Lakeside as a sort of a road test for a newspaper report. Qualified mid field and finished mid field. For some years the one make Laser series was pretty popular over here.

More to come.

Each picture conjures up a heap of memories. I could probably write a couple of hundred words on each one but I'd probably bore you all. I'm astounded at what I've been a party to in my "motoring" life.
So I'll try to keep them brief.

That would be a big coincidence though, 2 Joe Camilleri's, hardly a common name.
