If you were the chief designer foy Hyundai, What would you change about the i30?
I would have included Cruise control on SLX diesel. Done...I got mine too early and missed out :D
-
Hi Eyma,
As mentioned before full time backlighting for Instrument panel....
-
I would have changed the production line so people like grug would have theirs by now!
Nah, without owning one its hard to comment. I do agree that a sunroof would have made the SR more attractive. I would have also like to have seen a different headlight configuration (perhaps along the lines of Thumper's design!), and side indicators built into the mirrors.
Oh, and the inclusion of 'auto up' on the drivers side power window. My '89 626 had this feature, but many modern cars don't seem to.

Hi Dazz, Yeah I thought that we might have covered this subject before in a previous thread, but its been a while and I thought i might try and strike up a bit of discussion. Its better than TV rigt now.
I am trying to get into the cricket, but there is not much happening to keep me interested. I am sure the Indians are happy though.

I agree with 6 speed manual version.
Factory window tint for Oz.
Also the estate (station wagon) in Oz.
Otherwise its perfect!

Hi K Kid,
I believe we will see the estate here in 09 sometime. Its only just been released in yhe UK.

Better quality LCD in the dash (the trip odo etc screen) so you can read it in the sun.
More intuitive MP3 firmware in the head unit (like randomise all folders not just one), as well as bluetooth hands free like getz and tucson.
Have the fob tailgate button actually open the tailgate not just unlock it.
Have the SR wheels and tyres as a viable option and not a plain rip-off
-
The instument colour so I can see the speedo needle in day time. (OK when lights are on)
Individual trip fuel consumption readout.
For UK one of those folding ariels rather than the static ridged one we get.
-

Umm, it does. Press random once, it will play random in the current folder.
Hold down the random button untill you hear a beep, then the 'ALL RDM' will light up, everything will be played, random, no matter what folder the song is in. 8-)
EDIT: Oh, instant fuel usage readout to be displayed!
-
I'd like:
* the power outlets active permanently
* consumption readout on-the-fly (as mentioned)
* better handling of ID3 tags in MP3 files
* door mirror indicators (as mentioned)
* the aircon not to come on when auto climate control selected
* a proper alloy spare
-
ha the first post summed up all i wanted... Orange, 6 speed, sunroof... ah well maybe next time
-
A better quality sound system, just not loud enough

Drivers seat base to adjust lower.
Cruise control on 1.6 CRDi
-
Should have given us the prototype version!
As others say, it would have blown everything else out of the market!
Just look at the front, pure horn!

reminds me of the trailer to the movie sword fish... (i never seen the movie though haha)

Eyma that's why you don't work for Hyundai ! you would add weight with the gearbox add cost with the extra's and the car would go up into the more expencive price range. would not sell as well. just what i think.
but i'm sure to get more of the market those options would help. just being Hyundai they need to keep price down to sell.
-
You're right Eyma.. It was a good idea to bring the topic up again..
As most of us know the Crdi now comes with cruise... I think the 2009 model may very well have the indicators in the mirrors.
The Wagon (CW) seems like a shoe in for 2009.
Even though it's a simple fix don't expect they'll change the instrument lighting or many of our other beefs...
Would be also nice if the SR came with a diesel option...
-
I dont think its up to the Hyundai designers what each model includes, it's more likely the Dealer or Hyundai Aus, UK, IS etc.... who decides what to include in each model, most of the things you all mentioned are available in i30.
What I would like to have additionally in my i30 is:
Auto up/down on all windows,
Automatic dimming rear view mirror,
Electric folding Mirrors,
Armrest for rear passengers.
All of this is available, I could have special ordered my i30 at my dealer, It would have cost more because it would be a special request in the production line.
It's much easier for dealers to sell pre-customized cars,
Is it not possible to customize your i30 in AUS, UK ?

I have all those, but do not recommend the automatic dimming on the rear view mirror. It makes everything look green and very dim.. so difficult to pinpoint exactly how far the vehicle behind actually is. A strange setup, especially if the dimmer has actuated and the car now behind only has sidelights on. You can't see them
-
I think the thing I would really have liked would have been 6 speed gearbox and a sunroof. I'd really love a better MP3 interface (as stated by everyone else) but I love my eye candy so I'd like a colour LCD that let's you show spectrum analysis of the music as it's being played or a fancy screensaver. The option for LED lights would have been nice too. Hyundai needs a HRT/FPV type division so peeps can tweek their rides with genuine Hyundai gear IMHO...
(Sorry, I started to rant at the end there)

I really like the auto dim mirror and if you end up not seeing behind you one push of the switch and it clears, so I don't consider it a real problem. I also have the centre rear armrest (with cup/bottle holders), folding mirrors (which I would prefer to work with the igntition rather than a switch), auto windows all round (which I would prefer could be overridden in lock mode by the driver console and not just the fronts).
I also think the 1.6 petrol could benefit from a 6 speed box, however I am unsure as to the performance penalty due to the extra weight)
Pretty minor then, showing just what a well designed, excellent specification car it really is.
Cheers
Brian
-
Each to his own eh Brian?
I turn off the autodim as soon as it activates. Unfortunately it always resumes in the ON position when the car is next restarted. Agree with the folding mirrors too
Cheers

Is this on a single fuse?
If so remove the fuse and it won't activate.

Shared, but ta anyway

I'd like the option to use the radio when the key is removed, mainly for passengers' benefit when filling up with fuel etc.

Don't know of any cars that do that... too much chance of leaving it on and flattening the battery....

With the right rewiring you can, but to pull apart the dash is a complete pain, I don't know how to do it personally, but I do know it can definitely be done.
Cheers

You can just swap the radio wire in the fuse box to bypass the ignition... but it's easier to just leave the key in and the setting on accessories (if passengers are still in the car while you're refilling...) or carry a spare key if you need it while out of the car...
But.. if the radio will work without the ignition on sooner or later you'll end up with a flat battery... 8-)

Hi had my ride just 849km happy so far,if any thing I would like to be able to turn down the instrument lighting more for night driving, on min it is still to bright. What do you think.

There is a dimmer switch, I think it is to the right of the dash
-
Yer know were the dimer switch is ,it does not turn down dim enough for me, also find myself pushing the dark swith on the radio to stop gauge lights and centre console lights shining back in my face.

Every Ford Falcon from AUII (or at a min BA / Territory) to now has 1 hr play on the raido with out the key..! Never falttens the battery.
Also longer time delay to enable the windows to be put up post the egnition being turned off.
Get rid of the anoying N to P lock out of you turn off the motor before puting it into P on the Auto.
Get rid of the anoying P lock out unless the foot is on the brake and the key is turned on.. (cant push the car around the garage with the the Key at present..)
Better plastics on the back of the front seats. My 4yr old has scratched ours and it is only 2000km old..
Better climate control. The Climate control on the BA / Terry can not be noticed. It manages the cabin air temp perfectly. The I30 one I allways feel cold.. Have the manually over ride it 80% of the time.
Apart from these minor things.. I am really enjoying driving the i30.. Got 900km out of Tank full #3.. Got to be happy with that.
-
Limiting Radio use to 1 hour without the key... That's a good idea.. Didn't know chook tins did that
-
Add a digit to the trip computer (999.9 km is not enough to use the TC to track tank mileage in a crdi).
I concur with the suggestion for use of the radio with the ignition turned off (in my Ford Transit you can press the radio power switch with the ignition off and the radio turns on for an hour)
-

My radio DOES NOT work when I remove the key. The key has to be on the first click.

I take the point about flattening the battery and think the one hour timer is a good idea, my last fiat had a similar feature. Yes I could leave the key in but don't like to leave car unlocked for security and safety reasons. Unfortunately you cannot lock car with second key when other key in ignition, maybe that's another thing I'd change
-
I agree with Dave T, the trip meter should go behond 999.9.
I would also like to see a more comprehensive trip computer. Readings to two decimals would be nice. eg..4.78Lp/100. Also total time travelled. Another feature that a Mitsubishi Magna I owned a couple of years back was good. It would remind you to stop and revive every 2 hours by displaying a image of a little coffee cup on the dash board if you travelled 2 hours or more with out cutting the engine.

I hate stuff that tells me what to do... got a wife for that and sometimes don't like her either!
I swear out loud each time I put the car into reverse... hate the little beep that tries to tell me what I know I already did. And in any case it beeps several times while I try to engage reverse as well so it's useless because it beeps when it's not even in :D
What I would like is a much smoother "throttle" response. All the action, particularly in the lower gears, happens in the first centimetre.
I'm learning how to work with that though.
And I'd really like it to stop feeding fuel in when "they" decide I'm stalling it.

Pip,
Never experienced ay beep when selecting reverse. Must be a new feature. Ours is a Jan 08 build.

Pip, Im with Ouri30..
Mine is a Aug build (and am in Melb). Have a SLX, ESP and factory cc in the auto..
Mine does not beep at all when going into reverse...!
I want to get rid of the stupid lock outs all together...!
-
I would be guessing that Pip had rear park assist fitted.

If he has and doesn't like it.. I'll take it off his hands...
-
Mine beeps when put into reverse because I had the optional reverse park sensors fitted.
It beeps a couple of times when first engaging reverse gear and then only beeps again if I reverse close to something.
However it is not as good as the sensors that came as standard in my previous car. The i30 ones seem a little "hit and miss"
and I can't really rely on them too much when reversing.

My wife "beeps" if I go too close to something... then have to swerve to miss it.. 8-)

So that's it! Dealer fitted but not Hyundai.
Can I get rid of it (the beep) I wonder?
Pip
-
ROFL!
I had a similar 'problem' when I went to get an alarm fitted in my '01 Elantra just after I bought it second hand. The dealer told me to lock it with the remote, unlock it with the key and open the door to see what happens... low and behold the alarm went off ;P

Hi Everyone.Wondering if any has tryied to put a set of jumper leads or spare water for radiatorinto those cute little compartmants in the cargo area, I have and no matter how hard you try they will not lay flat enough to close the lids in a level poistion.Wish they had made the cute little compartments about 1 inch deeper then they could have been more useful. In the end they (jumper cables) now live in were the spare wheel leaves and the spare water now slides around the back cargo area. When you have a good hard look at them, really can't see much use except for a first aid kit which i am sure evryone has eh.???????.
-
Yeah, I have a similar problem with my jumper leads.
But at least the removable"gooseneck" from the towbar
fits nicely into the compartment which has the elastic straps in it,
so I'm happy with that.

They are a bit shallow but I've managed to fit a chamois, a small umbrella, some gardening gloves, some elastic ties, a small first aid kit and a few other thing I can't remember in mine...
-
I didn't ask if this comes in the i30, but it was nearly a selling point for the Astra for me - press and hold Door-Unlock button and it opens all windows to air out the car (eg on a hot day, while you're walking toward your car from down the street/across the park), and press and hold the Door-Lock button and it winds all the windows up - in case you forgot to put them up before you took the key out of the ignition.
There's a couple of things already mentioned that I'd like - sun roof, digital speedometer, trip timer, wing-mirror indicators.

It's a NEW car and you get roadside rescue, I presume you are in Oz? (No location in profile), so why would you want to clutter up the boot with these.
Just call them out.
-
I'd like it if the interior light would come on at night when you remove the key from the ignition, but before you open the door.
It would also be good if you could control the brightness of the stereo/climate control screens independently from the instrument cluster. I find they are a bit bright when driving at night.

Hi Eye I don't think we get "roadside rescue" (roadside assistance it's called here) as part of the 5 year warranty from Hyundai in Aus. Our local dealer offers it free between services if you get them to service your car and the wife got 3 years of it with her Nissan but not Hyundai by my understanding. Only ever used it once (in a Nissan) and it was my fault left the lights on in a car park (can't do that in a Hyundai )
-
From Hyundai Oz website http://www.hyundai.com.au/warranty/default.aspx (http://www.hyundai.com.au/warranty/default.aspx)
Hyundai Premium Assist is provided for 12 months, or 130,000km (which ever comes first) from the date of the car's warranty commencement. This roadside service is only available from June 1st with 2009 Sonata, Grandeur and Santa Fe models.
Pity, sounded really good.

I wouldn't want to wait 1-5 hours (5hrs is usual on a rainy public holiday, for example) for the roadside assistance - I'd prefer to just get myself back up and running on my own.

Why do Hy not provide the same after care service in all country's?

Dazz, the new Falcon FG turbo took CarsGuide car of the year, did not see any Hyundai's win anything this year. those turbo 6 get good fuel economy too.
this is good for our country m8, wish they had a turbo diesel, as with holden or ford you can go to the factory see your car built, also order special options. thats what i miss buying Hyundai. but i'm not complaiing just stating facts.

Good point Gary, i did put a bottle of water in the cmpartment and the side of the floor seems to have a hinge, so it worked out ok, i need jumper leads but, problem with that is you then need to talk someone into alowing you to use there car to jump start your flat battery. i think one of those power pack's would be better as never knbow where you will be if you get a fat.
also need to think if you stor all your emergency gear under the floor in those compartments, if your on a trip you have to unload everything to get to them.
yes i would likea 1,999.9 trip readout too, the falcon has that. but thats how it is, the falcon can go a maxium of abiut 840k on a full tank in the country, so useless having 1,999.9, the i30 i have managed to go 1,230 once as most of my country return trips are 1,000 or less, but my i30 always goes over 1,000 per tank, i have every fuel docket to prove that.

Number one change would be that they give you a free spare fob key. I mean it is terribly overpriced at $450, whereas I just bought a new dishwasher, loaded with electronics for not much more than that!!
They have to get real or loose sales, I could not recommend to anyone a purchase, unless the Hyundai/dealer came to the party!

Dave, can I suggest - go to your local Hyundai dealer and say
"Hoy (make sure you say 'hoy', it's very important :P)...
"I found out when my friend got his i30 he got 2 fobs - I only got 1! I think you must have forgotten to supply me with my second one. It's ok, I'll wait here while you order it for me." And then sit down and pull out a book and start studiously reading.

Dave,
There is plenty on this site on how fellow i30'ers got a 2nd fob.
Can't find at monment as search function doesn't want to play ball.
Will check later and if I find it will post link.

To resurrect the thread...
Anyone else find it very odd that blue lights would be chosen for the instrument cluster when for every other car I've owned, blue was reserved for the high-beam indicator? Caught me a couple of times now when I've tried to turn off high-beam in a panic only to turn it on instead. :-[
It's a crook colour anyway! Not easy to read.
-
Hi Pip,
I quite like the blue although Green or a soft orange might be o/k...
Have a look at the dash on a new Kia Cerato (very harsh red lighting...) I think you would appreciate our blue after that
-
i don't mind the blue, but pip has a good point there.
green might be ok? but not orange i hate orange instuments, i owned a mazda that had them hated it!
