GOT PROBLEMS OR ISSUES? => GENERAL => Topic started by: i30niko on July 08, 2012, 12:51:47

Hi everyone,
I bought a 2010 i30 diesel brand new. It was on sale at $19,990 drive away AUTO as the new i30 came out.
I have noticed 3 problems so far and I need some opinions before I raise them up as warranty issues with the dealership.
First is the 4-spd- AUTO gearbox. It seems to hold on 3rd gear very often. For example, cruising on a road 60km/hr and 2,000revs
which is 3rd gear. My gear box is set to "D". When I drop it down to "3" nothing happens, and then I put it to "D" again and still no change.
As I am cruising then I start to break, and the AUTO finally changes to 4th and the revs drop to 1,500. It is way too late! Why does it hold onto
3rd gear. I am not driving uphills, and I barely pressing on the throttle.
Secondly, when I press the "TRIP" button shouldn't the screen change and tell me fuel usage and all the rest? when I press it nothing happens. Only when I hold it it resets the Km counter. Is this a problem or is the TRIP computer only in newer models?
Lastly, when I leave headlights on, and lock the car and walk out, they don't turn off! I read in the forums 20-30sec they SHOULD switch off, but I waited for 1min and nothing. Is this a fault I should raise to the dealer?
ANY HELP SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED. REGARDS

1 - I didn't care about it even if this problem existed
2 - with pressing "Trip" button the indication on screen has to change no doubt (go to service or call a dealer to inquire if your car is equipped with computer)
3 - make sure your steering wheel locks itself when a key is retrieved (I did experience a problem a couple of times when I pulled my key out, steering wheel didn't lock and light didn't turn off, so I had to insert a key back turn it to ACC and back and then everything went ok)

Welcome to the forum. :happydance:
Not sure, but have you bought the SX model. The extra trip functions are only on the SLX model, could be the same for the other items you mention.
Regarding 3rd gear. This does happen on mine too, I notice it if I'm too light on the throttle. Basically, you need to tell the car to accelerate to a higher speed and it will then go to 4th gear.
The transmission also learn your driving style but this can take some time for it to work out.

The headlights should turn off by themselves but:
1. The headlights need to be on before the car is switched off.
2. They will only start the timed off once you have locked the car.
If you turn them off and back in again while the car is off then they will not turn off after the timeout.
To turn them off before the 30 second timeout just press the lock button again.

Hey guys I have tried the headlight thing, left them on, got out the car, locked the car, waited 1minute. Nothing. I will raise this issue with the dealer on the 1000km service.
As for the trip computer? If this is not inluded in the SX version, what is the point of having a button called "TRIP" near the dashboard? The instructions mention that it should change screen and display other informations.
Lastly, with the gearbox, 847563 what do you mean it learns my driving? Do you mean that this problem will get better. I am sure normally, every car should change to 4th gear when cruising. It is not as fuel efficient cruising on 3rd gear on 2,000revs when you can do it with 1,500. It seems to me the gearbox electronics need tweaking? Anyone else notice this problem?

The transmission gear changes are mentioned in this thread

The trip button is there to reset the trip meter. It has additional functionality in the SLX but for us plebs, it's only there to reset the trip meter.
On the auto, you wouldn't want the gear changing to top much below 1500rpm. I find it a little sluggish when It changes at 1500rpm.

I do not understand the concept of the car 'learning' your driving style. The gearbox is just a gearbox and is not efficient driving on the 3rd gear when it can easily change to 4th. I am sure this is common sense for any auto, regardless if the vehicle needs to learn or not.....
Either way so the headlight issue needs to be looked at? They won't turn off after getting out and locking the car. Waited for a minute+

i30niko
does your steering wheel lock?
your gear box seems to be:
adaptive gear box

Does the interior light come on when the key is removed from the ignition, and the switch set to door? There is a switch in the ignition which engages when the steering lock engages. There have been "sticky" switches which make the car believe the lights should be left on, as it thinks the key is still in the barrel, just not removed. Also pressing the lock button twice should turn the lights off (including interior). Is that happening? If not there may be a switch fault.

sounds iffy to me.

Welcome i30Niko..
On the positive side you saved a heap on your car and the diesel is a great engine...
So the Trip button is sorted ( it is like Beerman says)
The dealer should be able to sort the lights...
and hopefully your Transmission will adjust over time to change a bit earlier

Hi Niko,
I know it sounds odd but there IS some form of "Intelligence" in the auto gearbox which remembers the sort of driving you do and over a few days or a couple of weeks will adapt to your style. I know that is entirely non-technical but I have a manual gearbox.
However, 2i30s, one of our mods, has been through this (as have others) and he can explain it much better than I can.
I do have experience with it in that my daughter works for a local government and they have several i30s which don't perform all that well when one person has been driving one for a while then another driver takes over.
I can tell you they have a Peugeot which is even worse and apparently it's common in European cars these days.

I found with my diesel manual that it is not efficient to drive it under the turbo kick in point, i.e. 1750 rpm. I did that as a test for a few tanks. On the next tank I made sure it stayed above 1750 as much as possible and I got nearly a 100 km more under relatively similar driving conditions. This was backed up by a couple more fills.
Your other consideration should be that you only have 4 gears, so the top gear has to be suitable for 110 km/h cruising too without revving the crap out of the motor. I think you expect too much from that gearbox.

Hi,
Guys thank you for all your replies - It was very helpful - I will do a few more kms and see if the gearbox gets sorter out.
I will have to bring up the headlight problem to the dealer once the service is due!
Thank you all.

Perhaps think a bit more laterally, and get the gearbox to learn a language, or help out with the dishes at home....I always knew that one day I would have a car like kitt from knight rider.....is it black?
-
OKay,
I have done 2000km now and the gearbox is NOT learning anything. Actually It is me who did the learning.
I have now learned that the Turbo kicks in at around 1750rpm (on the diesel) and that is at around 65km/hr
when cruising on a straight road.
At 60km/hr the rpm is sitting just below the threshold of the turbo kick-in (around 1650rpm) and uses 3rd gear.
If I press the throttle a bit more and go just over 60km/hr (around 63-65km/hr) this is when the turbo kicks in,
and the car switches to 4th gear.
This is all good, but living in Australia where the speed limit is 60 in most of the roads, this is very annoying.
I believe Hyundai should have adjusted this to reflect Australian road conditions. Anyway, Will have to live with it.
it is not so bad now that I at least know how the car behaves.
As for the headlight problem, I went to the dealer and did a demonstration and the headlights turned off!!
Murphy had another law which goes like this "When Demonstrating the problem of a machine to a technician it
works perfectly....." And it has worked since then......oh well.....

Niko, there are large numbers of auto diesel owners on here who do not have your concerns about the gearbox so I'd strongly suggest you take a dealer tech for a test drive.
-
As much as I dislike autos I'd expect it to engage 4th at 60km/h if I were driving on a light throttle. One of the criticisms of earlier autos in general was that they would prematurely change up when ever the throttle was lightened, only to change down again when pressed. I guess they have fixed that. :whistler:
The main reason I choose manuals is for just the problem you have here. They seem never to be in the gear I'd have chosen. I've had three auto cars all up and thought they were all crap. At least the gearboxes were.
I actually test drove an auto i30 when evaluating what to buy. I lasted about 100 metres before crossing it off because it had changed gear several more times than I thought necessary in that distance just because I was a little heavy on the accelerator but if an auto is your preference you will have already waived your right to complain about how it changes gear IMO. :snigger:
But as I said, top gear at 60km/h is not an unreasonable expectation.

I've had similar experience. The diesel engine is more efficient at 1900rpm than at 1600 rpm even though it can pull at both. If the auto is choosing 3rd gear at 60km/h, I think it's because it's a more efficient gear to be in for your 4 speed auto at that speed. I believe diesel is most efficient at peak torque which begins at 1900 rpm for the i30.
Over a few km of flat road in my manual, 5th gear at 80km/h (1950 rpm) comes up at 4.0 L/100km while 6th gear (1600 rpm) comes up as 4.2 L/100km on trip computer.

Nice explanation Con... :goodjob:
