Hi all, Just got back from a weeks holiday in Coffs Harbour, Did you miss me? ::)
I met up with a fellow member, Davet while there, will post a separate thread with pics on this topic later. :)
Now I know for most of you on this site, you have achieved the magic milestone of 1000k to a tank, but I hadnt previousley. The car does mostly city driving so opportunities had been limited. Any way, before heading off to Coffs, I filled the tank to the brim, and i mean right to the brim.
The needle didnt move off the Full mark till we had about 350k on it. Now anyone who knows the roads from Canberra to Coffs Harbour will tell you they are pretty flat. The speed limit for most of the trip is 100 or 110kph. There are very few slow sections, and using the M7, you virtually by pass Sydney all together. All in All, ideal conditions for a good fuel econ run.
The only thing against us was weight. We were travelling pretty heavy with Myself, wife and Two kids of 11 and 9, plus everthing but the kitchen sink packed.
Well on arriving in Coffs, we had 830k on clock and 1/4 still showwing on fuel Gauge. :) To this point, the Trip computer registered 5.2Lp100. I was happy with that given the weight in the vehicle. Also, we were not trying to improve econ by travelling slow. We sat at 110-125klp most of the trip. We put another 220klms on the clock with local trips around Coffs as well as a day trip to Dorrigo. This is a very hilly climb, not good for economy but a very enjoyable drive.
When i finally filled the tank again, I had 1053 on the trip meter. The ave fuel consumpion read at 5.5Lp100. The Dte had just started flashing --- so could probable got another 70k out of it. Interestingly, I mananaged to get 59L in the tank when re-filling! How much can one squeeze into one of these 53L tanks ;D
I currently have 850k on the clock now and showing 1/4, so are well on the way to repeating the performance. ;D

About time you cracked 1,000km per tank! :lol:
60lt is the most I've squeezed in, as per the other thread.
Heck, I am trying to ruin my economy and the worst I can get is 4.8lt/100km :eek:
I noticed you said the --- was flashing once you get down past 50km DTE, you haven't had your 15,000km service yet, have you? Because when you do, I'm sure they flash the ECU with an update, thus when you get below 50km DTE, the --- will no longer flash, but the vehicle to fuel pump icon will flash.

Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow for the BBQ at the Cotter. (Bloody cold here right now, 9.2 degrees C. Was 34 degrees C during the middle of the week. What's going on with this weather?) :rolleyes:

well done Eyma, but if you think thats all flat going, try it on a push bike :) i have ridden the full length of then m2/m7 and back, and i'll tell you its not flat m8 :). also do you want to try riding a push bike over the moony bridge section of the F3? :).

I haven't managed to get below 100K DTE yet... and I think at best i've achieved the equivalent of 800KM per tank... my economy reading has not been below 6lph :( I don't know how you lot are doing it!
I did a 700km return trip on Saturday from Sydney to Young, mostly 100/110kph straight roads and it STILL didn't go under 6LPH. I don't know what I am doing wrong! I change gears at around 3000 RPM and never go above 4000RPM... trying to stick between 2000 and 3000.
Maybe its because my car has only done 1200kms...

I would say your right, the car needs to run a bit more.
I noticed my fuel economy progressively as I put more K's on the clock. It has just shy of 14,000 now. The other secret to getting the most distance to a tank is to really fill it right up to the brim. This has been spoken about in other treads a lot. The diesel has a tendency to foam up making it difficult to fill right up, but you just have to be patient and fill it till the diesel comes right up the filler tube. :biggrin:

Mate, I have almost 30,000km on my diesel, and yesterday gave it a flogging (Having fun playing with the 6 cylinder Falcodores) and BMW 1 owners. (Much to their bemusement)
Did some driving up in the hills around the back of Canberra, heaps of stop start traffic through town, then a quick blast back home.
All up, worst I could manage was 4.7lt/100km, this was doing some full throttle overtaking along the way.
Though I will say, all of this was done during the day, 20+ degrees C, and my vehicle is not standard. :P

Well it's happened.
I've had my diesel manual for three and half weeks, have done three and half thousand kims, and got my first 1,000 kms from a tank today.
Did 1006 kms and I managed to squeeze in 58 litres when I refuelled.
Gotta be happy with that.

I lose the car for a few days from tomorrow as it's going in to get it's sunroof fitted and then I'm getting the interior re-trimmed in leather.
I was going to get this done as soon as I bought the car but I haven't wanted to be without it cos I enjoy driving it so much.
It should all be finished by mid next week though and will then be used and enjoyed for the next 4 or 5 years or so.

Geeze I only fill after 1000 km! Done over 32000km average about 48L of diesel per 1000 km. Mostly country km 80-120kph. Best is about 3.6 worst is about 5.2 What made a noticeable improvement was after about first 10000 km seemed to be run in and I tried advice from a bloke at City Tyres and Mags in Adelaide to use about 38 psi in tyres (225x45x17) this improved mpg immediately with only slightly harder ride. I rotate tyres every 5-7 Thou. Mostly only me in car and no boot full of junk rattling around. Best steady speed seems 2B about 90kph for fuel conserve. Air con seems to use about an additional 0.3L per 100km. Lead foot and lead weights are worst offenders!

You guys from south OZ seem to get some of the best economy.. got to be the nice flat roads and warmer weather I guess..
Here in hilly tas I would consider an average of 5.2 a good result....I can get 1000kms but have to use the whole tank...

Yes, I'm with you Dazz. I'd be struggling to get those results constantly probably. I live up the top of a big hill (Greenmount) here in Perth so the last thing I do every day is drive up it, which usually has a bit of an effect on the l/100km. (It's all good in the morning though.......)
I just wanted to do the 1000km to prove to myself it could be done and I'm extremely happy with the car. In fact, I use any excuse to go somewhere. The diesel is a new experience for me but very pleasant to drive and the fuel economy is an added bonus. I've had the sunroof fitted now and it goes in tomorrow for the leather so will post some pics when I get it back.

Its the same up here in Darwin. I think its because of the constant hot weather, we have to use the air conditioning almost all the time and it kills the economy. But nonetheless the car is still averaging around 5.2 ltrs/100km so its pretty good :D
Also, db08, if you don't mind will you be able to tell us how much was the cost to do the sunroof and the leather ??? :)

I could possibly have got the leather cheaper elsewhere, but the company I went to has been there for decades and is used by most of the new car dealers to do their work and make it look "factory" so I went there.

Yes, I deliberated long & hard about it because of the cost, but I got the car itself at a good price so that helped in the decision and also I do intend to keep it for 4 or 5 years to get full use out of it. In my other car, I tended to do around 12,000 or 13,000 kms per month, but that has now cut right back to around 4,000 so it will work well with the 5 year unlimited km warranty I think.

Well that's what I reckon Dazz. I've gone without for a lifetime of work so if you can't get something you want at this stage of life, when can you? I have three other cars but they are collectors and are lucky to do 3,000 - 5,000 km per year each. I had too many cars so because of the way things are financially everywhere at the moment, I thought I'd rationalise a bit, go down to just one everyday car and use it for everything. And the Hyundai warranty just made sense for the kms I do. A friend of mine had a 1995 Excel that they bought second hand (an ex rental car), and sold it recently after putting their three kids through it, with 260,000 kms on it and it was still very reliable. And Hyundais have improved out of sight since then anyway, so I thought it was a good way to go. So far so good! I really do enjoy driving the diesel manual, I think it's great.

It's very pleasing that a man with some class vehicles "in the shed" appreciates the i30.
I have had some much dearer vehicles myself and access to a lot of others via my stepdad and the i30 diesel can hold its head high .. :D

Expensive doesn't necessarily mean better, does it? I'd like to think though that Hyundai will listen to customer feedback, including the minor "grizzles" as far as the i30 goes. It's a great car that could be made better with just a few little (non-costly) improvements.
If they brought out a seven seater all-wheel-drive to compete with Ford Territory I might be tempted too. But I guess they own majority share in Kia and the new Sorrento is being released here later this year.

It's a shame that none of the "suggested improvements" in that section on our site haven't and will probably never be implemented at factory level

well i can say i had 940 km with 1 tank of diesel with my 1.6 crdi 116 HP :D and not a gentle drive.. :D :twisted: a few races in mountain curved road with honda acord diesel... and.. well.. he did in final get behind me :D
this was in winter when ther was a little snow on road... -10 degres celsuis :D
now i regulary get with my heavy foot 850 km on one tank of diesel... (highiway speed always betwenn 160 - 180 kmh)..
a coleague on hyundai forum in croatia i think did get little over 1000 km...

Looks like my first tank is going to give me around the 700km mark. Got ~560km on the clock now, and the fuel indicator is telling me I've got another ~155kms or so to go before Sheldon wants another drink. :D

when you fill up keep watching the throth and bubbles, as it goes down fill it more keep doing that till you see throthless liquid then you are on maxium full. don't worry it will not expand.

I just waited till the pump clicked off once before I stopped filling. Guess I should wait for the click, wait a bit more then see how much more I can fit in after.

I'm happy to give up after the first click. It takes all day to fill to the brim, I just pretend I have a smaller tank. :D In any case I can get 1000Km, so there seems little point trying my patience. I might be anal but sometimes life is just too short. :D

well, i must agree it can be time consuming, but i do it, i found some brands of diesel and some pumps easier than others, also after first click, slow down, take filler nozzle out so you can watch the fuel coming out just keep it flowing so the throth stays at the top , when you get it right up it will slowly go down keep it filling up then you will see the throth stays full then it turns liquid.
but as i have said before if you try Caltex Vortex premium diesel it is much easier to fill up as a lot less throth. i like it the best!
if you do this you will find your fuel gauge stays full from 250k to 350k before it moves off the full mark, will depend on driving conditions.

Hmmm. It looks like I will be filling up at Caltex generally (gogo Everyday Rewards Card!) but where I am, I've never noticed there being a premium diesel being offered. There only seems to be the single flavour so to speak.
Might have to look a little harder the next time I visit!

Here is a link about Caltex Vortex Premium Diesel, at the bottom there is another link to click and it comes up with a list of service stations that stock it, they have Vortex Premium Diesel written on the pump, after a hundred or so you feel motor becomes more responcive as injectors clean up, but as seldon is a baby you should feel motor is smoother and more responcive quicker, but you really need to fill up twice in a row to get a 100% tank full as if you just fill up you have a percentage of what ever was in tank b4 mixed in.

Oh neat. Looks like at least 2 of the service stations I'd visit will have it! So that's good news. Thanks for the info Lakes! :D Also currently going by numbers looks like I'll squeeze out over 700kms on my first tank now. Not too shabby!

keep revs around 2,000 then shift up, make sheldon pull from 1,500 in 5th the pressure pushs the rings out to get a good seal down low, also keeping at lower revs helps economy, but a rev to say 3,500 once a week is good as keeps the variable vane in turbo moving to stop carbon up.

Soo, I discovered that Woolworths Caltex and Caltex are two different things!
The Woolworths Caltex doesn't sell the premium diesel, it only offers the low sulfur one.

I was told woolworths Caltex petrol is from indonesia not sure about there Diesel but i knew they don't stock the Vortex premium diesel. i just filled up with Vortex P D saturday went up central coast to visit car runs nice on it! will keep useing it as like the way it runs.
