Title: 2012 i30 Sat Nav Not Working
Post by: jobski on July 18, 2012, 05:25:33
One morning the sat nav system popped up an error and the MAP, NAV and (i) button just didn't work anymore. Nothing happens when I press the AGREE button.

The radio, media, bluetooth and other buttons are still working fine.

Seems the navigation "module" crashed or something. I tried restarting the unit using the pin reset at the upper left corner to no avail. I also tried disconnecting the battery and fuse for the media system (MULTIMEDIA) but the problem still persisted.

Here are some photos:

Any ideas?

I'd disconnect overnight, if no joy on reconnect, off to the dealer.

I'll bet it's running Windows CE too  typical.

Try holding the pin reset in for 30 seconds while it's all powered up.

.. I called the Hyundai helpline and they advised me that the unit will be replaced..

Have they observed it in its "stuck" state or are they taking your word for it...?

If the latter, it suggests they are aware of an existing issue with these units. Either way a replacement is great news.

Hi jobski, just wondering if you have got the SatNav unit replaced and how is it going?  A similar problem has just happened on mine and I want to know what to expect.

Thanks.

Where is this PIN reset that is spoken of???

Maybe that will solve my missing voice files problem?

Replaced! That is a big jump, I expected they would just change the internal SD card.

A bit late reply but yes they replaced my unit in less than an hour. Its good as new and it works the way it should.

I don't know what I've done before but I remember fiddling around with logging settings for the nav. Right now I refrain from doing so as it might happen again, but I will be waiting for a software update.

Thanks.
Sorry for the late reply.  I called Hyundai Helpline and they got my dealer to book me in to look at the Sat Nav next week.  Funny thing though is the Sat Nav fixed itself after I didn't drive the car for 2 days after the software crash.  I am now a bit freaked out to touch anything out of ordinary.

BTW, can I ask what version of software and maps that you guys have on your i30?

My SatNav has failed as well.  Shows the error message and won't go past the "Agree" button.  Dealer has had a look and has ordered a replacement unit from Melbourne.  Hope it lasts more than 3 weeks!

Same problem for me now i.e. cant get passed the 'agree' screen then, radio and media player still works fine.  Have tried reset to factory settings .. anything else I can try (dealer says they'll replace but will take a week and a half)

I took my 3 week old Premium I30 for the complimentary service yesterday. Driving home I noticed that it was on the radio screen - I always have the map visible. Push the button  - nothing! Tried the Sat Nav button and the i button - nothing. The radio, media and phone are all ok. Took it straight back to the dealer who informs me that it is a very common problem and that it is at least a 4 week wait (I am in Melbourne). He also told me not to complain to Hyundai because they would source an old replacement and 'it would just do it again'. I told him I was not really impressed to having no clock (because it is trying to sync with my GPS!) or sat nav for the next 4 weeks- he basically said - that's life! You don't expect that on a brand new car I replied and he said it costs Hyundai over $5000.00 to replace one unit. Not that that is really my concern. Very disappointed.  :(

Welcome to the forum Schravs,

Sorry to hear about your problem. I assume it was working when you arrived for your "service". I wonder what they did to break it. Keep us posted and I hope your association with the brand, improves in the future. Most of us here, have very little to complain about.  :(

Edit,

Have you thought of contacting another dealer to verify that 4 weeks is the norm. They may be telling porkies.

It's not an physical SD Card that can be removed.  It's built in to the board on the computer that is in the head unit.  Some members of the Veloster forum opened their units up and had a look.

Have any of those with issues tried resetting the head unit (and I don't mean through the menu system).  There is a small button on the left top of the unit and you need to use a small pointed object to press it in.

Someone asked what the head unit details are.  Here are ours:

Software Version : 9.2.0.5
OS Version : 15E120307
NNG_Map Version : 8.5.11.275416
Factory Map Version : AUSNZ12Q3
BT Version : 3.0.7
Firmware Version: 6.0.11_M_GD_3_0

Oh damn it..
Just got the same problem as others here.
The car is only 2 weeks old and I cant get past the agree page.
GPS NAV not working. Clock is not working as well. Took it to the dealer this morning and after about an hour, they said they cant fix the problem.
For some reason the map had been deleted all together. Strange. They have tried to rebuild the map twice and it has failed.
They have now ordered a complete new unit for replacement. Not sure when it will arrive.
Hopefully soon. 1st Service is due on the 2nd of Sept.. So hopefully by then.
Although the car is nice, its quite disappointing at the moment. Service however has been so far good.

The problem is that the unit drops the maps, do a version check and you will find no map files.

The dealer can reload the maps, they seem to stick the second time around.

The dealers seem to be making a point to "H" by sending the whole unit back every time there is a problem, I figure because of the grief they get about all the software shortfalls.

I did a version check before bringing it into the dealer.. and there was no MAP found.
After they have tried to fix it, the map is loaded and the version can be found.
But it cannot go past the agree button.
Factory reset does not help.. and the pin reset also does not help..

Will be bringing the car in tomorrow morning to get it exchanged.
Apparently a good 1 hr, so I will be waiting around at the show room I guess.

Will report back tomorrow what happens.

Ok.. Just got the car back today.
They fitted a brand new unit.
It is all working fine now.
I think I know what I did wrong. Although I don't think the Navi system should die like that any way.
I went into the Navi setting and went into update.
I thought the update was for the traffic updates and stuff. I'm quite baffled as how can it cause issues like this? how is it so easily accessible?
There was no warning message or anything. So folks, that is a no go zone.

Just for information wife has a three week old i40 Premium work vehicle.

Went in to Dealer for 1500 klm service with the sat nav working. They attempted to update software in the unit. Result sat nav not working. Symptoms as described in this thread.

Dealer is quoting a four week wait for replacement unit. Wife completely unimpressed.

My research indicates lots of these units giving problems across the range.

I have a feeling these units are not researched and designed by Hyundai Mobis division.
Must be some 3rd party contractual supply.
Once you get your replacement, it should be all fine thereafter.

@joesama

My thinking as well, but it's Hyundai's model & reputation that's getting damaged here, surely they would want to protect these things. The unit is a feature of the car, a centrally located, multi functional device that the driver / passengers interact with. I would insist on much better reliability that what is currently being achieved.

If I had this model, I'd have a brand name after market unit fitted.

I reckon it's really time Hyundai/Kia sourced their radios from another company....

They have been having issues for many many years and I reckon it's just not good enough.

How many times have we heard just on this forum that radios have had to be replaced multiple times?
I know this isn't just with recent models either, a former girlfriend of mine had a 2005-6 Kia Rio which had had it's radio replaced a couple of times in the short time she owned it...  :fum:

Same issue on my newly bought i30 premium. Its not even a week and the GPS freezes on the 'Agree' Button. Speaking of which.... isnt there a way to disable that page? Seems annoying to everytime click on the accept button.
Anyways will give the dealer a call and see what he says about the issue.....
Starting to regret my purchase already

Nah.. Dont feel like that.
The car it self is a fantastic car. The only issues is with the GPS unit.
Just get it replaced by the dealer. That should fix it for you.

And talking about that agree page, the short answer is no. There is no way of by passing that page.

Just got back from the service center this morning.
Apparently there was a new service update bulletin for the Nav/GPS units.
They have updated it and its now working fine as so far.
I have tried quite a number of things in the system and everything seems to work good.
Hopefully this is the last time I will have to visit them for this problem.

Wife has an i40 premium. Sat Nav froze at Agree screen at 1500 klm service (while being updated by dealer). Informed her four weeks for a replacement unit.

Dealer Informed her yesterday (after four week wait) that these units are problematic across the Hyundai range for bluetooth and/or sat nav problems and that they have a lot of people waiting for new units but are only receiving one at a time from Hyundai.

They now cannot give a time frame when unit will be replaced.

Needless to say very frustrated and dissapointed.

Did they definitely say that it needed a new unit?
Cause my 2nd unit only needed a software update to get it working again from the dealer.
Also if they cant give an answer to when the new unit is gonna be arriving, perhaps try to find out from other hyundai dealers?

Tried two different software updates which didnt work.

Email to Hyundai Australia through Icare site has resulted in a phone call from the Dealer advising a new unit will be available to fit today.

Dealership I am sure have done their best in this situation. Hyundai it seems to me have problems keeping up with resupply of faulty units.

Vehicle is at the dealership as I type.

Just a quick update.
Mine has been flawless ever since the update of the software from the dealer few weeks ago.
I have got a response back from Hyundai in Korea.. (Own source) and been told that there has been emergency software update. This was released not too long ago.
This should fix all the problems we were facing.
Hopefully this will get every one sorted out. Such a pain if it keeps getting broken for no reason.

HAHA,  Mine went ages ago,  when i called the dealer,  he said it would be 4 hours to take itout to check the problem, then they would put it back in until a replacement was ordered then, would be another day weeks later to replace.  i told him to shove it and ill wait a while so i get new maps and by then they would have had a few come in, no way ill let a dealer touch my car unless they had too.  based on the info from this forum.  the drivers of these cars know more about how to fix them than the guys and gals at the dealers.

I only use our satnav a couple of times a year to find stuff in Tassie (we have explored pretty much every area of Tassie and know most streets and roads intimately)

Well what I can confirm is that I have called up several different Hyundai dealers in Vic and they all confirmed its the latest one.
The software for the entire unit was released some time July. So it does makes sense.
It probably got released in July, and by the time it gets tested and approved for shipment, Aug to early Sept.
So there you go.

The date shown on the unit is not all that important, as it could be the originating date that the maps are constructed from. I'm sure the dealer would apply the current update for your maps, given the your unit has required this much attention.

Hi everyone!

I've been experiencing some similar issues on the last couple of days. I drove to the beach for the holidays period. On the way, I decided to add a new point to the navigation, like A -> B -> C. The GPS simply got lost. I thought it was because the road was between mountains. Used the iPhone for a while until I could get to some higher place. No deal at all.

The last 4 days it tells my current location is 150km from my real current location. I was in the sunshine coast, QLD, and thought the signal over there wasn't too good... I was wrong. I'm back today to Brisbane and nothing seems to get my current location correctly. It is still ~150km away from here.

When driving, it shows perfectly when I'm turning, or even when moving... but it can't really get right where I am.

I tried a reset to default settings, reset the whole unit on the reset pin, reinstalling the maps with an USB sticker which came when I bought the car, and none of these options have worked to me. Very frustrating.

Have anyone seen this issue before? Something else I should try? Where is the GPS exactly located?

I might give a call to the dealer tomorrow morning, but don't wait to get it fixed during the holidays season. And end of January is the first service (1 year).

well, hopefully will find a solution quickly. Hope you guys have an awesome new year.

Hi bernardeli

 :wttc:

Try to remove the + and - terminals from the battery for 30 min.

That might be enough to reset the unit.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Before removing the + and - from the terminals, should I worry about warranty at all? I say that because I'm far from being an expert with cars.

I will give a call to the dealer later today when I have a free time, and do hope all goes well.

Keep you all informed, and thanks once again.

No need to worry about the warranty.

Make sure you remove the - first and when mounting the terminals again, then start with the +

So.. I've booked in my car to be serviced (first year) for tomorrow morning and to look at the gps issue.

I haven't tried to disconnect the battery. I'm not really familiar with it, and decided not to f**k it up. Every time I try something like which is not on my skills, something goes wrong.

The good news comes now. I had to go out today, switched the car on and as always, looked at the gps position, it was wrong. So I switched the screen off and started driving... I was about to cross a traffic camera, and suddenly the beeps came from the speakers.. switched on the screen and surprise!!! It decided by itself to come back to life!!!

That said, my GPS is now working... not even God knows what happened I reckon.

Anyway, still taking the car tomorrow to be serviced and will tell then about the issue and ask if they already heard a similar issue.

It's a very good personal capacity to now when to stop.  :goodjob2:

Yes Asterix, sounds to be a good skill stop when need to. :D

Good news -- I took my i30 to be serviced last day of 2013, they updated the software and so.. all good until yesterday.

And here comes the bad news. I now have the same problem described on the very first post of this thread. Surprisingly, my unit doesn't allow me to go through the accept button, and shows Thread error every so often. I had completely forgot to call the dealer yesterday and only remembered today when came down to the garage.

I'm hoping for a unit replacement and do not have any further problems after that.

Time to wait for the next chapter.

Just came back to post my outcome with this issue.

Apparently after a software update, they say, it's working again. I hope it was my last issue ever with the GPS unit.  :)
