Title: Kenilworth and Imbil - Sunshine Coast Hinterland
Post by: Surferdude on August 06, 2012, 12:27:01
On Saturday my wife and I felt like getting away for a few hours so we took off early to revisit Kenilworth where we went a few months back with Dazz & Trish and Russ & Sandy.

From our place near the coast the drive up into the hills is pleasant and picturesque. The route takes us through Maleny and Witta then on up the Mary Valley, past The Charlie Moreland Reserve in Kenilworth National Park. And on into the little township of Kenilworth which is a Mecca for weekend motorcycle riders.

We had morning tea in the same cafe as before (but there are plenty of alternatives on offer) after a wander up and down the main street. While we were relaxing with our coffees and cakes, a couple of workers came in. They parked a very old Holden Commodore (maybe early 90's) outside. Both were wearing hi-viz clothes. One was mid 40's, with an ear ring, long grey hair in a pony tail - and a tongue stud. The other was younger - maybe early 20's. The older guy ordered an ham and salad roll and the younger guy a quiche slice.
They don't make road workers the way they used to. :whistler:

Wandered through the park and across to the local cheese factory where we were tempted by some very nice matured cheese and mango yoghurt. The cheese factory is well worth a visit.

Then it was on to Imbil where I have spent many a halfway break in rallies over the years and the Qld round of the Australian Rally Championship uses the large local showground as it's main service area each year. Took a run up to the lookout which I've never done before. Imbil is the end point of the "Valley Rattler" a vintage steam train which runs from down near Gympie and well worth a ride if you're in the area.

We came home via the Bruce Highway.

You pass this on the road between Kenilworth and Imbil. I believe it's called Kenilworth Bluff

A closer view.

But from the distance - actually from Imbil Lookout, you can see there's a lot more to the spur than just what you see from close up.

This mean looking beast was on the side of the road - fenced off thankfully.

Some shots from the Imbil Lookout.

On the way back to the highway we passed this grand old barn (house?).

Hi snow, as Rusty says, great to hear from you. The trip as detailed had us home for lunch.
But if you inlcude Maleny and Montville, you can make a day of it without hurrying. And you can head up to Montville from Nambour.

And if you find yourself down on the coast, I know plenty of coffee places.

Hey Trev and Sowcherry, if you guys are going for coffee then count us in.
I have a vacation beginning next weekend and so I should be able to find
time over the ensuing two weeks to meet up for coffee if that suits you guys,
either on the coast or in the hinterland. We know an interesting antiques /
coffee shop in a secluded spot between Maleny and Montville with fantastic
ocean views. They serve great coffee and fabulous homemade scones, jam
and cream in an old house that is full of antiques and memorabilia to browse
through.
However I won't be in my i30 :blubber:..... you may know my son is now
enjoying that car and I now have a Mercedes B200 CDI.
Cheers, Russ

Thanks Russ.
I knew the hols were starting and as we (well my wife) has fixed that little problem, I was going to give you a call.
But maybe snowcherry works during the week?
Anyway, it'll have to be this coming week as I have to be in Brisbane next week.
Let's see what snow says.

Pretty soon Dazz. I have done almost 1500km now and have formed largely positive impressions.
Have been snapping pictures recently so will put a report together soon.  :)

thanks for the pm :)

no i'm not working and apart from an app't on the 26th (brief one so may have to fill it out with shopping :P) i have nothing pressing on that comes to mind, as long as i know the date in advance so i can keep it spare.

the coffee and scones and antiques sounds like a nice stop - always love a good coffee.  :happydance:

OK Snowcherry, I'm thinking that either this Sunday or the following weekend
will be a good compromise as Trev says he is working all next week.
What do you think Trev??

PS Check out the coffee/scones/antique place here

Hi guys,
not working next week, just will be in Brisbane.
And this Sunday is Claire's birthday - family arrangements - so that's out. The following weekend or the week after are good options at this stage.

OK Trev, so at this stage let's say we book it in for the weekend of
30th Sept /1st Oct and then decide whether to do Sat or Sun as the
date draws closer.
OK with you Snowcherry??

PS. Happy Birthday Claire :goodjob2:

that would be ok i think.  :)
i do have a lunch this sunday coming so that would have been out for me (forgot about it until yesterday ooops), but i'm pretty sure i have following weekend free. i guess my only clause will be to not make it too early in the day as i don't sleep so well and don't function in the mornings.
