Title: A couple of British classics
Post by: Seoul-mate on August 22, 2012, 12:13:45
Not sure if it was the after effects of a recent knee operation making me feel
that at 61 I should start reliving my youth but I recently went out looking at
a couple of classic British sports cars. Both cars were private sales and both
within a few kilometres of where I live. The first was a 1967 Triumph TR4A.
Nice looking car but it had been a recently imported Californian car and was
still lefthand drive. Which in itself is not a problem and can be driven as is on
Australian roads, but made the wife feel a little uneasy in the passenger seat
facing the oncoming traffic directly. The car needed a new paint job to make it
tiptop but was generally in good condition. Hadn't driven a Triumph since the
Spitfire I owned in the seventies.

The second car was by far my favourite. A 1960 MGA 1600. This car was in magnificent condition, a really georgeuos car.
I was so rapt I made the owner an offer of $25 000 knowing that he wanted a few grand more than that but hoping he
might just weaken. Of course he didn't and I couldn't justify spending over $25 000 on a car which I would likely just drive
on the occasional weekend so sadly I left it behind for some other lucky bugger to own.

So you got to take both of them for a spin Russ?..

When I was really small my Dad & Mum had a selection of MG's .. Mum used to talk about them quite a bit.. I got the impression they were fun but harsh riding and a bag of bolts!

Must have felt strange after the cars you have had lately

Beautiful machinery  I'd love to own either of those (but not both, I'm not greedy you know)

Maybe we should have another forum section "Members Other Motors: I WISH" ;)

Yes I drove both Dazz. You're right, harsh ride but fun and no brakes to speak of,,,,,,,I forgot just how poor brakes used to be in the good old days.
And as I recall neither of them had seat belts fitted which was a bit unnerving.
The MGA is such a sleek machine, no door handles anywhere, just cables inside.
The guy selling it was an ex Cathay Pacific pilot and his wife was Korean. Naturally she prefers Hyundai to the MGA

I've really enjoyed driving the Golf lately Dazz but the M-B only landed in Brisbane last week and I won't get it for another week.

Yeah I love them too Steve but like women they leave a lot to be desired when compared to something 40 years younger :whistler:

You never know!!!!!

If he doesn't get any other offer higher than yours then he might get back in touch.
