I'm not an engineer, nor an astrophysicist, but I think the answer is "gravity".

It was amazing how he went into that uncontrolled spin.
I heard him interviewed afterwards and he said that he considered opening his emergency 'shute then because he was afraid he was going to black out.
But he knew that if he did, he wouldn't break the sound barrier so he decided to stay with it and he eventually regained control as you can see in the video.
It appears that the videos of what he would have seen are protected so I guess someone is going to make a fortune out of those, but it would have been an unbelievable sight from his perspective (once he stopped spinning).

Post by: FatBoy on October 15, 2012, 10:45:19: Gravity is always in play, regardless of distance. That is how the planets stay in orbit, how the moon stays in orbit, etc. It is just that after a certain distance the gravity becomes negligible and is affected by other gravitational forces.
