Evening all. Purchased my i30 about 6 weeks ago and very happy with the car, one tiny problem though. I notice that the drivers window is very very slow when opening and closing, got so bad the other night it froze completely. Was wondering if anyone else had suffered similar problems. Car going into garage tomorrow to be checked out.
-
welcome aboard . the window is an easy fix mate, its hapend to me also. :fum: get a can of silicone spray [preferably with a nozzel] and spray some in each side of the where the window slides up and down,it worked for my 2 i30s. :goodjob2: :goodjob:

Welcome Cloppa ..Hope Steve is right :winker:

My window's been going up real slowly recently. Might try a squirt of that magic juice myself :)

 Don't do it Steve it's poisonous (Only use it on the windows, not yourself) :whistler:
-
But it makes it go up really easily. ;)
-
My window rasps as it's lowering, so not sure "lubeing" the guide rail is going to help much, but the idea's still bookmarked for when I get home :)

That'd be today then. Let us know what they recommend :)
-
Could be the motor so better get it to the dealers as your warranty is out soon, isn't it.
-
I wouldn't think so the warranty on a 61 plate should last until at least 2016!!
Many garages are doing the silicone spray in the guide rails as part of the service now.
-
Turns out it just needed a squirt of silicon spray seems nothing mechanical wrong, wonder if it woud have been the same if i didnt have 4yrs left on warranty, mmmmmmmmmm makes you wonder.

My reply was for Shambles.
Forgot the quote
-
I've done mine too, after I'd swabbed the insides of the guide rails with a cotton earbud :)
Time will tell whether it's been successful; glad to hear yours is sorted, Cloppa.

That stuff sure does the trick :D
I wonder how long it will last before needing a refresh...
Thanks for the tip (https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=18249.msg195992#msg195992), Steve :goodjob:

Where would one pick up a can of said magic spray?
Both my front side windows are a bit sticky going up/down.. although i blame the passenger side on the wife being sick down the side of the car one night thanks to too much vino... thats another story though.
-

Halfords should have them (around the £6 mark) or get one delivered from around £3 from any online tat bazaar
-
Works every time on the wife's Falcon...
I wonder how the silicon goes with tint??
-
:P And to think how some people took the pi$$ out of my recommending Silicone Spray for such jobs... :happydance:
-
pi$$ wont work Keith, silicone spray does. :whistler:

your local automotive parts store should sell it,but don't use wd-40 or crc its oil based. :disapp:

FWIW my passenger front window is much slower than my driver's side.
Also, both my rear windows are faster than my front windows.
I suppose it's down to how strong each individual motor it. It doesn't really bother me because I open my driver's window the most and not the passenger side.

I have never had to use silicon sparay on the windows of any of the other cars that i have owned, must be something stupid that causes the problem.

Same here - I guess the windows are a much tighter fit between the pillars than what we're used to?
-
Thanks to all all for advice,, much appreciated.

Window slowing down again i am convinced this is a motor problem. Will give it a few more weeks see how bad it gets before i go back to the dealer. As i said before i have never had this problem with any of my other cars.

I work for a rather large automotive glass business, and we have always used graphite powder. It's available from most automotive shops and hardware stores in a convenient squirty bottle. This is what most channel rubbers have in them from factory that allows the glass to slide easily. Because it's a dry lubricant it doesn't disappear after a couple weeks and doesn't leave hard to clean silicone residue on the edge of the glass.
Itll last you months and months with one application and is very hard to wash out of the channel rubber with water.
Here's a link to some on eBay..

That really was a great call. Did some digging, then some furtling, then some more reading, then some ordering.
For the UK, got this item (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130787171346?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649) for £5.33 delivered. Seems to be the preferred way of keeping locks dirt-free and as Ross says, it lasts for months and months.
-
Mines on it's way too.......... THANKS :goodjob:
-
Great feedback. :goodjob2:
-
Remember to let us all know how it performs.
-
Good tip and I've already got some.
Edit: Found front passenger window was slower than driver's. A very small amount of graphite puffed in and both were the same again. It's now on my list of things to check now and again (along with bonnet hinges).
-
Many thanks Asathorny for the advice and the ebay link. I had already ordered some silicon grease from Amazon (£4.50 ) for 50grm tube which arrived today, will brush into the runners at the weekend. Saw a clip on u tube with a guy using the same stuff he had his own car repair shop and reckons it was so much better than the silicon spray. If it doesnt work then i will try the graphite powder.
Apart from the window sticking i cant complain about the car.
-
Silicon grease is fantastic, use sparingly as it goes a long way.
-
Just an update: Since putting the silico grease in the window runners over a week ago the problem has now been rectified. Wifes happy so i am happy.
Once again thanks to all.

I was thinking of this thread when a lovely recall notice came in the post for my Toyota Aurion about sticky windows. What caught my attention was the statement
In some instances, the switch may become inoperative. In the worst case, if a commercially available lubricant is applied in an attempt to rectify the operation, the switch assembly may over-heat and melt.
http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/1029256 (http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/1029256)
Perhaps one should be careful about the use of silicone spray in some circumstances.
Edit on second reading it appears the power window switch is the issue, but still may need to be careful with where you spray it sometimes.

I saw that recall notice and assumed they meant if lubricant was applied to the switch (not the window):undecided:

Tha t blue writting is terrible to try and read. My eyes are stuffed now. Might try some lubricant on them .

Thanks the yellow writting is soothing, :happydance:

HI . not had this problem but have noticed the windows are slower than on my previous cars. I think the motors that drive the windows have smaller motors or are geared to be slow. It annoys me they only auto down not up though!

Some of us have auto-up and auto-down on all four windows :whistler:
That graphite powder definitely does the business, on our door locks too :D

That's where I got mine. It really is splendid stuff, but it can stain. Badly. So you need to be careful with it (it's a powder which easily gets into the air if you're not careful).
I puffed a bit into my front & back door locks, and garage door. The keys now simply glide in and turn really freely.
-
Ta for the warning (I'll go look now) :goodjob:
-
Well, it's basically powdered pencil isn't it. :whistler:

Aye, without the morning wood
-
Silicon grease has been in the window channels for several weeks now and the windows are still gliding beautifully. The cold icy weather on some mornings has had no effect on the grease.
Best stuff ive ever come across. Might put some on the soles of my youngest sons shoes, see if he can get to school on time.

Let us know if it works, because then I also have 2 bandit's who need the cure... :snigger:
-
A liberal application of a boot to the rear end of the billy lids will have more effect.... :whistler:

With regard to the Graphite Powder, Ebay is not always the best option... :fum: :disapp:
I have some coming from England that I bought on Ebay which cost me something like A$13.71 including freight ...
I was in a local hardware store the other day (Home Hardware) and they had it for A$6
-
I hate it when that happens, I bought a 1TB drive not Ebay but another on-line.
Next day Aust post send a brochure with 2TB for the same price :fum: :fum: :fum: :fum: :fum:
-
Guys your local Locksmith should have it... it's recomended for door locks.

When my Graphite Powder arrived from Ebay the plastic container it came in was around 3 times as big as the one in the local hardware store so not so bad after all.
The "bottle" looked very similar but was 50 grams .. I'm thinking now the harware store one was probably 10 or 15 grams at the most.

Get sprayin'
Door locks are a great start :goodjob:

I shouldn't run out in a hurry :D.. you have me a little worried about the staining issue though :sweating:
-
Just remember it used to be used as a paint by our forefathers, and being a slippy beast it won't wash off so easily.
-
Some people may remember the Etch a Sketch toy. Well if you were to dismantle one it contained graphite powder and once you got it on your hands it was a bloody nightmare to get off. ( so i am told )
