Title: RECALL anomaly with universal joint on steering column
Post by: spanishmike on November 21, 2012, 14:30:23
I have received a letter from my dealership requesting I make an appointment to bring the car in to check an anomaly with the universal joint on the steering column Is anyone else aware of this?

I have a 1.6 Style Sport left hand drive registered July 2009

There's nothing on VOSA (http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp) (for the UK) about this.

Yet.

No recalls on th UK VOSA website for the i30.

Just beat me to it.

Checked the American site - NHTSA - and nothing there.

Car booked in for next Tuesday I understand the "inspection" will take about an hour So I'm afraid you will all have to wait until then I will report back provided my Spanish holds up Not too good when it comes to technical stuff!!!

Just checked the DK Hyundai website.

There's no recalls for the i30 at the moment.

It has been documented here that the column & UJ has been replaced under warranty for some. I've been unsuccessful in having mine replaced for an obvious clunk when turned off centre. I'm about to have my annual service where I'll bring it up again.

Well... thing is, nearest Hy dealer is in Shrewsbury, about 50 mins away. I fell out with our new local one who did my last service as I felt they were untrustworthy (detailed elsewhere in here) & £100 more than my normal non Hy servicing agent.

So I might have hassle with anything that might involve a bit of Good Will.

Go on just go and ask.

You never know they may feel they owe you one and pull out all the stops.

Does the universal joint have something with the steering wheel noise which I posted (reply#4) here ?

I raised mine as a solo case Asa... and that it had been like it in the 2 years I owned it, but that I found out on here there may be a known problem.

Asathorny is correct The letter came from the dealership It did state that I could take it to any Hyundai dealer and also asked if I would inform them if the car had been sold on. It also recommended that the matter was dealt with asap
The car has always been serviced by the dealership They have not informed me of any problems and I have not been aware of anything unusual All will be revealed on Tuesday hopefully

I have taken my car into the dealership today Apparently a few i30's have been recalled of a particular age (which obviously included mine) to inspect part of the steering mechanism. I do not know if this just refers to only LHD or a particular batch that was imported to Spain. The inspection took 20 minutes and no problem was found. Hope this helps but it is still a bit of a mystery.

Well I just got my car back from the dealers after having this inspection.

I asked what they found & I was told "the inspection has been carried out to Hyundai's requirement"

I havent detected my old familiar rattle on turning left yet, at least not on the short journey back to the office from the dealers.

I know where it always showed up though so I'll report back once I've passed that way.

So far so good, I will be really chuffed if I dont have a problem any more.
