righto about 3 months ago i was after a second hand ute. requirements were - dual cab, turbo diesel, 4wd, and thats about it. then along came this tidy number - a '96 tf rodeo, 2.8 turbo diesel, already fitted with a TJM Tourer Top canopy, TJM alloy winch bar and a Hayman Reese towbar, bought it off some bloke for an extremely cheap figure - about 3 grand under market value - because it was running like a bag of shite and he had been quoted $2000 by his "mechanic" to remove the injector pump and reseal it. half a day later and $4.60 for a injector pump drive shaft seal and rolly was back to behaving how he should.
the day after i picked it up
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1116_zpsb4d85e74.jpg)
metalic green paint
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1120_zps249afdc7.jpg)
the main use for this ute is going to be camping and fishing trips, so a few mods were called for.
first up were the spotties and uhf
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1117_zpse616caa0.jpg)
then a set of twin thermo fans from a ef falcon with a davies craig thermo controller. (havent got pics of this at the moment)
then i got these muddies really cheap - 245 75r16 (equivalent to a 31 inch tyre) maxxis bighorn's fitted to 16x7 inch sunraysia's
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1148_zpse1fcd1f4.png)
off of this
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1149_zps3e821562.png)
and fitted to rolly with a 2 inch suspension lift front and rear, and front sway bar removed to get greater axle articulation
before
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1152_zpsc430c6b0.jpg)
after
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1158_zps46eab38a.jpg)
other things i've done since ive had it are,
changed every oil front to rear
new nozzles and needles in injectors plus reset cracking pressure
valve set
wound up fuel rack screw on injector pump quarter of a turn
wound up star wheel on boost aneroid on injector pump eighth of a turn
wound up boost pressure to 12 pounds
new shockies front and rear
replaced front wheel bearings
replaced front upper and lower ball joints
future plans include
fit an intercooler
3 inch dump pipe from turbo
fit locker to front diff (happening real soon, ordered a "LOKKA" auto locker from www.4wdsystems.com.au (http://www.4wdsystems.com.au) should be there when i get home from this hitch )
snorkel
2 inch body lift
dual battery set up
aircompressor and tank for airing up and down tyres for beach work
and thats the stable mate of our i30
-
It sure helps when you can do jobs yourself Quote $2k, Actual #4.6 & .5 Day :goodjob2: :goodjob:

great job, looks tops.
Would you fit side steps to it if you're going to lift it?
-
great job, looks tops.
Would you fit side steps to it if you're going to lift it?
probably not sidesteps as such, but a set of rock sliders (wich essentially are just a beefed up set of side steps) because then they can be used as a jacking point for a high lift jack and provide a bit of under body protection for your sills

gday all
been busy last coupla days building building building
was getting sick of hearing toolboxes slide around in the back of the ute and also when we go camping, having to unpack half the ute to get something from the front :'( not fun. So i started looking for ideas for building a false floor and a set of draws for the back of the ute. this is what i came up with
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1265_zps8be9205e.jpg)
and
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1266_zpsf2a541c0.jpg)
then i forgot about pics for the next couple of hours, but this was next
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1268_zpsac76a56a.jpg)
and this
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1267_zpsde54e910.jpg)
pretty happy with the result, considering my limited woodworking skills
cheers bretto

is there much weight in it
there's about 15 kg per side, wich i don't think is to bad considering the weight that will be going in them.

Looking good, Kom... :goodjob:

Now you can capitalise on your venture and create business opportunities.
How about a bumper sticker?

got a side awning today, its gonna be mad for day trips or when we've gotta pull up somewhere overnight on long trips. takes like 2 minutes to set up.
and takes like 4 minutes to pack up.

Loved all your photo's vids and updates,I used to run the Maxxis on my 4x4 great allround tyre great wearing and longevity, only thing I didn't like about them, was the servere aqua planing on wet bitumen if you weren't careful
-
That awning looks the goods Brett :-)

thanks mate, the bighorns seem to be a pretty good tyre so far, they are pretty loud anything over 60 kph and get louder the faster you go but you've gotta have a trade off somewhere. They are friggin awesome in mud or slippery clay and rocks, but with all the rain lately i've had a few scary moments on wet bitumen :scared: like both front wheels locking up with the lightest of braking force - your just a passenger then :scared: :scared:
as i said its been raining for about the last week straight and its doing my head in being stuck inside. A bloke's gotta entertain himself somehow and the only indoor entertainment available is likely to send me blind or give me hairy palms, or forearms like arnold schwarzenegger. so i took rolly out for a play.
all crossed up in a washout. need to remove the rear bump stops for more articulation, the rear wheel thats compressed is on the bump stop, if the bump stop wasn't there the other wheel probably wouldn't be off the ground.

then on the way home had a bit of fun on a black soil road, was boggy as. the bighorns do an awesome job as long as you can keep wheel speed up, even when your only just moving, to clear the tread blocks and they just keep chewing through...NOM NOM NOM

OOH AAHHH!! Hope that was your own lawn??? and not your Moms
Yes the bighorns are a fairly well lugged tyre and like you say would be noisey,I just had the A/Ts,they didn't get too noisy until you where over 80-90K's and then they were almost unbearble, they were not that good off road either unless you only run 10-12 psi, then you had sidewall issues, yes it is all compromise
-
OOH AAHHH!! Hope that was your own lawn??? and not your Moms
yeah my lawn, but the wife hasn't seen it yet :sweating:
just one less bit i have to mow :happydance:
-
just tell her you had a couple of hugh dog's with itchy arses, came a dragged thier bums on your lawn :whistler:
Looks like Buffalo,it'll grow back and needing mowing in no time, especially with all the rain ya been having by the look of it,speaking of which I gotta go mow the last few square metres of grass we have here, bring on winter.
-
took rolly and the wife to murphy's creek escape today for a look. was a pretty good day out.

bit of footage of rolly in action on their "4wd track". It was labled as "extreme - experienced drivers only" on the map, but was pretty mediocre in reality, but still fun

Awesome :goodjob: Thanks Brett (and Hannah) :goodjob:
-
Great vids and pics again, even when I had my 4x4 last thing I would want to do is go out a deliberately go four wheel driving, but at the time I worked ona farm so it got a fair bit of use, only reason I wouldn't 4x4 ing again is I did eight years of it in the Army,I've had enough getting 4x4s and 6x6s out of trouble and bouncing around.but certainly looks like you and your wife enjoy it
-
Ain't it fun? :D
And fancy making Hannah stand out in the heat and the flies while you travelled in air conditioned comfort..... :whistler:

bought some mad gear for this recently
when we got back from our last fishing trip our 3-way fridge was really struggling so i went and bought one of these - a 65L PRIMUS dual zone fridge freezer, its friggin awesome on 12 volts in the back of the car it took 45 minutes to pull the temp inside down from +21 degrees to -12degrees and about another 20 minutes to get down to -18. no more hot beers for me :drinks:
http://www.primusaustralia.com.au/index.php?p=line&sid=1341895712 (http://www.primusaustralia.com.au/index.php?p=line&sid=1341895712)
so then i had to get a dual battery set up for the ute so i bought 2 x 100Ah deep cycle batteries and this to charge them off the ute battery
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300886966014?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300886966014?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
the i got these to keep the batteries topped up when the ute is parked for a few days and the fridge/freezer is running
a 100w solar panel to mount on the roof of the canopy, it will take up about half the roof space and you can't see it from the ground when you are standing beside the ute
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271002601516?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271002601516?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
and a 30amp solar controller with data logging for the previous 3 days to keep everything happy
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261004126227?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261004126227?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
and these 12 volt outlets for the tray of the ute for power in the rear
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300869441125?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300869441125?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
and incase everything goes to shit and its raining and cloudy and no solar power i bought this just to run the fridge and a battery charger, a 1kVa ultra quiet gennie, its supposed to be only 53dB, and run for 4 hours on 2.5 litres of fuel
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/130795073913?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/130795073913?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)
i have also enquired about a long rang fuel tank, just waiting on the supplier to get back to me with a price and availability. it'll take my poxy 48litre capacity out to 112 litres :happydance:
http://www.thelongranger.com.au/rodeo03longrangefueltank.html (http://www.thelongranger.com.au/rodeo03longrangefueltank.html)
pics will be posted when everything is fitted up

Sadly, most of the links aren't working, but sounds like a cool setup to me. Just make sure, no one nicks it all. :(

-
THAT'S better Kom. :goodjob2:
-
Original links repaired ;)

Brett
Like you I like my creature comforts, sue would love to travel Oz in caravan, but for me it would have to be a 45' to 50' fifth wheeler or a huge converted tour coach for me to do it.
I was looking at the LRT, was that how it stays or is there a protection plate that goes over it,just look a little exposed to me,just wondering,
-
Seems like a lot of stuff Brett  (but at maybe a $1000 all up will make a big difference to your trips) :goodjob:
-
*update*
got home from work yesterday, and had quite a few boxes of goodies waiting for me :D
so today was dedicated to the fitup of said goodies.
first up was the 100 Watt solar panel
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1482_zps95477eee.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/komaterpillar/media/IMG_1482_zps95477eee.jpg.html)
and on top of the canopy
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1495_zps4ad7e9a0.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/komaterpillar/media/IMG_1495_zps4ad7e9a0.jpg.html)
then the 30 amp solar charge controller, mounted and wired up
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1486_zpsb7b54bb4.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/komaterpillar/media/IMG_1486_zpsb7b54bb4.jpg.html)
then the dual battery kit
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1494_zps611a7da9.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/komaterpillar/media/IMG_1494_zps611a7da9.jpg.html)
changeover relay mounted. it cuts in at 13.2 volts and charges the auxillary batteries and isolates them when the starting battery gets down to 12.7 volts
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1489_zps92d480c2.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/komaterpillar/media/IMG_1489_zps92d480c2.jpg.html)

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u412/komaterpillar/IMG_1492_zpsada8d50e.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/komaterpillar/media/IMG_1492_zpsada8d50e.jpg.html)

:goodjob:
Looks like you're having fun. :D
-
Impressive Brett, I wonder if i could put a solar panel on my hybrid to keep my battery charged :happydance:
-
Good to see you wearing the Chinese safety boots whilst conducting the fitout.....
-
There's nothing wrong with a matching thong.
-
Brett good set up,don't ever come west my man,if you where caught with the batteries mounted there it would be a red sticker, had a mate did the same thing some years ago,he didn't get stickered for that, but for something else, not thinking he fixed the few problems he was stickered for, went in for an inspection, when the RTA inspector seen where he had the batteries mounted, they flipped wouldn't even let him drive the ute home he had to trailer it,big No No over here to have batteries in the cab with Ya
-
They give off Hydrogen / Oxygen in the stoichiometric ratio which is explosive. You may have your own "Challenger" accident. If they say they're sealed, well, they are, except for the holes. :(
