I'm currently reading up on ODBII as my next gadget attack. I don't own a mobile phone so is there a DIY interface cable design - and software - I can hook up to a Linux or XP laptop?

Just look on eBay for ODBII to USB cable or adapter.  There are heaps and they are not expensive.

I will be interested to see what you discover.
