On page 4-107 it gives 2 sets of conflicting instructions, as follows...
1. "To use the external USB device, make sure the device is not mounted when starting up the vehicle and mount the device after starting up.
Then, 14 paragraphs later it states...
2. "If you dismount the external USB device during playback in USB mode, the external USB device can be damaged or malfunction. Therefore mount the external USB device when the engine is turned off or in another mode."
I've made the crucial phrases larger than they appear in the manual.
Am I being thick, or do these 2 instructions contradict each other?
If so, can anyone tell me what is the correct procedure for using an external USB device?

As it turns out it matters not, whether the device is mounted when the engine is running or off. No damage, disortion or other bad effects.
I plug mine in whenever I feel like it, and dismount at will.

Treat it like your computer and it's USB connections.
(Yes, I have corrupted the data on an 8gig stick by pulling it out when the i30 was indexing the music, when starting up)

Just out of interest after you corrupted the 8gb stick were you able to resurrect it by formating or was it stuffed?

All I did was put the stick into my work laptop here, and rebuild the FAT. (All files were still there, working perfectly fine again)
If it was too corrupted, I would have just formatted it, started again.
(I'm a computer tech by trade)
I've tried different partitions, and can say that the i30 has NO control over what partition to use. (Looks like it grabs the last drive letter of the mounted device)
For transversing partitions with the i30, I'd love to know how this was performed!

USB can't read NTFS. Can read FAT32, which means a limit of 32Mb when formatted using WinXP. I have tried using a third party formatter that means partitions larger than 32Mb can be formatted with FAT32. This works fine, but the reading of the partition by the stereo takes longer and the last track is not retained when the stereo is swtiched off or the ignition is switched off.
To test the above, I used a external USB box containing a 2½" notebook HDD.

I guess ipod is the way to go
