Title: better exhaust note
Post by: me217 on April 09, 2013, 11:49:15
hey all, just wondering if anyone knows of a cheap idea to get a better exhaust note out of my little diesel, because at the moment it sounds too much like a hybrid with a slight tappet knock. i'm hoping to get a deeper exhaust note and a bit of turbo whistle wouldn't go astray. but dollars are really tight. but am prepared to do all the work myself.

i thought about removing the rear muffler and replace with a bit of straight pipe as the exhaust is hidden under the car it would be nice and discreet,  but i also thought it might just sound like crap lol

There are threads on here about that. I'm using tapatalk at the moment so wont add links.

We put a 2inch sports exhaust on our Crdi with a straight through rear muffler (custom made) and it did nothing for performance or economy  but did make it sound a bit like a WRX under load.

Custom made for $280 via Local (Devonport) Midas Muffler outlet ...

I gave it FOC to a member from Melbourne (He organised cheap freight at his expense)

He hasn't been on here since (AFAIK)

I believe he's doing eight years for the stash that was stuck up the end of your exhaust pipe, Dazz.

I jut yesterday remove the rear muffler and tail pipe ( unfortunately its attached) like many have said at idle and low down its still quiet but under load I think it sounds great!!

In saying that I'm looking for a decent price 2 inch straight through for when rego inspections start next year

I wonder if it's the same for GD? The crdi GD has a bend tailpipe at the back, so dunno it'll fit straight pipe. Would these modifications affect warranty and any legal matters?

Only if it was proven that the mod caused the problem. Catalyst Converter playing up or something (but unlikely)

It is louder but not illegally so  :undecided:

I ended up going down to a highly recomended muffler shop not ot far away from home and got a 2.4inch cat back system fitted, Whilst it was sounding nice and loud with out the muffler, was not a fan of the slight smell of fumes when idling or warming up.

Is a little bit quieter then with out the muffler but i recon it sounds a hell of allot better, the note it makes is really good, especially when you back off the throrrle a tad!!

As for performance might just be in the head but i feel like it goes a bit better, dont know why but especially up long step hills i feel like it pulls a bit more!!

If i knew how to upload videos and files  so that fit the maximum size i would put up a great video i filled from while driving. Mounted my contour camera  ( like go pro) on the rear sub frame! sounds good.

That's great ryane. :goodjob:

You can either upload video to Youtube and post a link here or upload it to photobucket or a similar hosting site and post the link here as per the tutorial for posting pictures (in the Welcome section)
