Title: Skyline - my new love affair.
Post by: agentr31 on June 19, 2013, 14:02:23
well guess what...

the i30 has a new friend to share the shed with! i dunno if anyone has picked it BUT i have a passion for R31 skylines/nissans. so before R31's get to rare, i bought a project, its not registered, and probably wont be for years... its a toy to play with when im bored and have a little spare cash, which is not very often. total cost including a tow home $1200!

first modifications are coming this weekend, an aftermarket steering wheel, (stock one is beyond repair) and import/GTS1/GTS2 struts with 'floating hubs', these give you access to the bigger nissan calipers from newer skylines, bigger single piston, 2 piston or 4 pot calipers and better disks

plans are, new suspension, big nissan brakes, manual conversion, 4.11 diff ratio, LSD, rear venetian and tint, car hat, and a set of superlight wheels, then possibly turbo conversion from a VL commodore.

it wont be done soon, i can guarantee that and im in NO rush having done this all before, just this time i wont sell it no matter what happens.

pics for pleasure

There's no such thing as a bad car.
Sometimes just a misunderstood one (not in this case though).

cheers DB! she does needs some work...

ahh dazz i don't look at cars as 'A to B'!

well first weekend of WINNING! i managed to locate some GTS1/2 struts... they are actually from a GTS1 too, pretty rare kit, the only other way to get them is to find an import coupe/passage wreck and hope they haven't been taken already!

then i went to the wreckers and located some C pillar trims that are not sun damaged, and some rear mudflaps (OHH GOD I LOVE MUD FLAPS)

then came the failure... fitting the aftermarket steering wheel (you can all imagine what a 23 year old steering wheel looks like) the boss i had doesn't quite fit, it wont lock on the taper to the steering column and the nut bottoms out... so it looks like I'm buying a new one!

what the donor car looks like
(http://wiki.r31skylineclub.com/images/thumb/b/ba/Gts1.jpg/600px-Gts1.jpg)

this weeks mission, to locate GOOD belt mouldings... they are frigging rare, and one of mine is stuffed from grandpa super gluing that horrible chrome strip back on to it!

Remember, eBay is your friend.  :D
Chasing those rare parts is half the fun of doing up a car I reckon.

Ohh yeah, that's true, nothing feels better than getting a NOS part you know is NLA and then holding it up to the sun like the queen just gave you the state of origin trophy!!

I also keep an eye on gumtree, wreckers and scrap metal.

DB = true car nut!!

 Yes, I am a true car nut.
I knew all my car makes and models when I was three and I haven't changed.  ;)
My eldest daughter at aged two and a half could point out and identify most cars on the road.
Tragic, isn't it?

BINGO!!

i have a FULL turbo set up for the R31, from this pig... it has more rust than an iron ore mine in typical VL fashion

good part, has a bigger turbo, chipped computer, 3'' dump pipe apparently made 190RWKW, bloke was adament on showing me the dyno sheet, but i CBF looking at 9pm on origin night and the engine is royally rooted...

bad part, computer is water damaged, and the car has not been run for 5 years due to a cracked head! who cares its only being stripped of useful parts then sent to sims metal!

from what i can remember, huge injectors, fuel rail and fuel pump [1350cc],xf falcon throttle body and custom manifold [fabricated plenum] t3 garret turbo with 3: dump pipe, huge front mount intercooler with 3" piping, full 3" exhaust, button excedy clutch, mini spooled diff with 3.8 ratio, adjustable cam pulley, and the list goes on. $$$$  :faint: we don't know to much about the head or bottom end work done on the motor because they were modified before my son got it a few years ago.  :undecided:  the guy had pics of the car launching off the line at a Calder park street meeting with one front wheel off the ground,it has run an 11.9sec pass on pump fuel, half an exhaust and slicks. when he bought the car other than having 9" slicks on the rear and 4" front runners it still looks bog stock original,it even came with the factory 15x7" interceptor rims.

ohh hot dang, the turbo set up MAY have made its way on to the orange R31... what shall we do besides rego and road worthy + turbo brakes LOL!!
Title: Re: Skyline - my new love affair.
Post by: agentr31 on August 16, 2013, 14:36:44
well she runs!! thanks to my dad coming and helping me fit up the exhaust manifold!! should have seen the smile on his face when we got it going and spooled up for the first time!!

then i had to fit the turbo injectors, pretty easy, took a couple of hours because I'm slow and not rushed!

currently I'm upgrading the brakes... the stock brakes are woeful at the best of times... I'm using the GTS struts with the bigger rotors and calipers, not the best, but an improvement!!

i knocked up a crossover pipe last week with the aid of a band saw and tig welder, made a small stainless steel bracket and plumbed in the AAC valve, and PCV system! i did those two at home, so i silver soldered them as its easy, and can join dissimilar metals easily! a few clamps later and its all bolted up and turboed!

pictures tell a thousand words!

gotta have a better than stock steering wheel in and old school car!! also helps with the steering wheel lock as it sits into the corner of the windscreen and A-pillar better with a small wheel on it

just after tig welding up the 3'' pipe and fitting up the silicone hose.

all painted up in heat proof paint, with the 3/4 outlet silver soldered on and clamps fitted up, notice the kick up to clear the rocker cover...

and all installed on the car, with a pod filter, i actually wanted the stock air box but with out adding a million elbows and joiners it wasn't happening...

i bought these wheels for shits and giggles, Cheviot 'turbo' they have the maddest offset, 15x7, i wish they worked on the maroon car, BUT due to the bigger brakes, they are on the orange beast...

sitting pretty i reckon, would look really tough with 4 degrees of camber and slammed down low!!! although i can bet the tyres wouldn't like that as i have learnt before!!

cheers guys, i prefer to give it a go rather than pay somone to do it for me, saves money, gives you skills and you can say "thats my doings'

honestly tho the welds are rough, but literally i threw it together one day at work (had to be fast wasn't being paid to be there LOL)

I cant figure out how to make the welder NOT 'suck back' when you hit the weld you have already done, it causes porosity and you have to go over it again making it look fugly.

I think it has something to do with the lift off knob, me actually learning how to use it properly, and how thin the exhaust pipe is compared to what i usually weld.
Title: Re: Skyline - my new love affair.
Post by: Phil №❶ on August 17, 2013, 00:58:26
Welding's an art. I've watched training on u tube and then when I do it, looks like a dogs breakfast.  :'(

Although, I've only got a gasless mig and the moisture in the air is very difficult to eliminate. Don do enough to warrant a better machine though.

I need some auto darkening shades too, that would help I'm sure.
Title: Re: Skyline - my new love affair.
Post by: agentr31 on August 17, 2013, 01:04:18
your problem is gasless mig not the auto tinting glass... get gas!

we have a deacent enough mig at work, we ran out of wire, and i found a spool of gasless... it lasted 5 minutes and was in the bin! literally took a deacent machine back to the stone ages...

personally i feel TIG is the best all round machine, sure its fiddly with the tungsten rods, but once you get over that part and stop touching the work and rod, its pretty easy!

All this time, I've been blaming my lack of skill.

BTW, Have you thought of an intercooler at all for your engine. Hy seem to think it's worthwhile.
Title: Re: Skyline - my new love affair.
Post by: agentr31 on August 17, 2013, 04:11:07
yeah, no need yet... VL turbo didnt have an intercooler stock, while it has a bigger turbo, its not being pushed, and it only has the stock injectors and NA ecu.

im running low boost (7.5psi actuator), while it would be benificial i dont feel up to the task of making the piping up, and i got those silicone joins really cheap along with the 3'' piping

if i were to intercool it it would need to have 2.5'' piping and i cant get those joins cheap :(

the thought is there on the other car this one doesnt last long... and its not the easiest car to have a cooler on, the S3 front end is much easier to hide a cooler in!

went to do the LCA's and i only wanted to weld on 3 50x50mm plates one under each bush and a central one, last time i fitted new bushes the LCA started bending because IMHO they are a bit flimsy, then couldnt find anything fast besides these, so they went on, THEN the press broke, so i spend 20 minutes welding them on for nothing! ohh well looks tough

cheers guys, whilst it was not the plan to have the orange one on the road, ill use it as a test bed, if it all works good, the maroon one will either get an R34 neo turbo and manual conversion OR another rb30et with a high mount and some form of deacent turbo, external gate ect ect.

on the weekend i tried the VL turbo computer in the R31, and its dead so my suspisons about it were confirmed, so i have 3 options,

1 - sit on gumtree waiting until a good VL turbo computer comes up.
2 - ebay a chipped computer from some bloke down south.
3 - i modify my spare ECU to take the turbo chip from the VL turbo computer (requires me soldering and de-soldering a chip and a board)

i might take option 3 and see how i go, if that fails, then its wack new plugs in of a higher temp range to help stop the fouling while its not registered, and wait for a VL turbo computer.

Did the front LCA bushes, and ball joint boots.  repco are slack, 4 times ive asked them to get the rear sway bar link bushes, 4 times they have been there waiting, and 4 times they have not been there upon pick up... they even ordered in the front LCA bushes and STILL dont have the rear sway bar link bushes. Off to stupid cheap for some superpro ones i think.

I also did the UNI's in the tail shaft... they were just starting to go, they had the beginnings of the chatter marks on them when i pulled them apart! probably got them just in time, no pics. was too lazy

pics of how to do the front LCA bushes with out a press, using tools/objects lying around and a vice, just remember the front bushes differ from the rear, they are stepped, and only go in one way..

Removing the old bushes, i used my BMW motorbikes exhaust clamp, a socket, and 2 sockest placed 180 degrese apart in the arm to help stop it crushing (instead of welding a strap to it)take note you only need to push it out 5mm and it only comes out ONE way. a bit of WD-40 helps get them out too, and dont forget to clean up the holes with a bit of emry tape.
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/2013-09-20143306_zps9dbb7f2e.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/2013-09-20143306_zps9dbb7f2e.jpg.html)

here is the installation of the new bush, i kept the two sockets in the arm still to stop it deforming, then used a 30mm to go over the small side of the bush BUT sit on the lip of the control arm, then a tow bar to push nicely and firmly on the bush to get it home.(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/2013-09-20143528_zps9747e3d9.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/2013-09-20143528_zps9747e3d9.jpg.html)

$7.10 gets you one of these bad boys from Nissan, may as well do them as they are almost always nearly stuffed unless you have done them before, just use a soft drift like so to tap the metal ring down over the ball joint (so you dont strike it with a hammer and damage it). dont forget to wipe all of the old grease off the ball joint and add some new grease to the ball joint.(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/2013-09-20143903_zps52be0d6c.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/2013-09-20143903_zps52be0d6c.jpg.html)

Air compressor was broken and hard to get to, so i didnt wire buff up the arm and paint it matt black, sucks... but here is the finished item, $70 and a grand total of 1 hour gets ya one less thing for the authorities to pick on.

ahhh been busy as!

computer... as previously discussed, i attempted to mod it, highly unsuccessful...

i removed the chip, soldered a socket on, then FAIL, didnt work, so i looked on ebay at a guy that modifies them and sells them for $200, looked hard at his pics... showed another chip fully removed, nothing to loose aye... i chopped it out... STILL DIDNT WORK, many F & C words later and a beer... i wacked it all in the shed and left it alone...

anyway i went to the tech info section BAM shows you exactly what to do... all i needed to do was extend a jumper 3mm to the next hole *face palm*

i did it, works properly now! so i fully modded an ECU with pretty much guess work and a stroke of luck! saved $200 straight up!

then this happened, all 4 wheels finally got finished! now for tyres, i can get falken ZE912's for $125 a tyre, might roll with them! i've always had good experience with the falkens, instant smoke, heaps of howl on the hard corners, and deacent grip for the price!

agentr31,what did you use on your alloys, was it Autosol and a buff, now that they're up to snuff if you use Calfornian Purple,it's easier than getting the buff out all the time
Title: Re: Skyline - my new love affair.
Post by: agentr31 on October 08, 2013, 13:21:09
long drawn out process, takes 1 carton of tinnies per wheel lol

i used a 'renovator' style multi-tool (bosch to be precise) with 320 grit pads, sanded all the machine marks out and the laquer off, back to bare alluminium, then hand sanded 400, 600, 800, 1200, 2000 grade wet paper (makes hands all shrivled and funny) takes about 1 hour per grade of paper... then when i was satisfied, hit it with the buffing wheel and white compound, then some brasso just to get the black compound off and touch up where its a bit dull.

TBH its not perfect like when you send them away, but its 99% there, i probably neeed to run the buff over them again just to get the spots i missed.

oh and this california purple, i might have to investigate! if its better than brasso ill be a happy man!
Title: Re: Skyline - my new love affair.
Post by: Just Rick on October 08, 2013, 13:38:26
Much better than brasso I think,if you let the wheels get back to what they were,or should I say as dull as they were,it would take a couple of goes with the CP original, but it is basically wipe on a few rubs and wipe off, thats what we use on the alloy of the trucks, but it will only get very minor imperfections out

california purple might be the way to go to keep the shine on them, they are about as good as 1~2 year old alcoa's atm not quite that new look unfortunatly there was a touch of existing pitting that i couldnt remove from wheel weights/sitting for god knows how long...

lol dazzler, thats why i stated 1, 30 can block per wheel to polish them, i get fridays off now due to the amount of leave i had owing, and the fact that somone at work that is a contractor just wouldnt let it go and kept bringing it up to the boss that i had not taken leave in a long time... i have a bit of spare time to mess around with things!

long drawn out process, takes 1 carton of tinnies per wheel lol

the cracked tail lights have been annoying me... i dont want to go putting my 'afterburner' lights in it, so i went to supercheap, bought some altrex body protective sticker, and wrapped the tail lights with that, its clear has a 3 year warranty and made the lights looks really shiney again lol.

pic of the after burners, they are going in the maroon skyline, although i COULD, put them in the maroon one, modify all the chrome strips to suit it, as i dont have the boot garnish for them and put the series 3 lights in this one... i CBF doing it at this very point in time lol

cluster all fixed!(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/2013-10-12132151_zpsf2a176f2.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/2013-10-12132151_zpsf2a176f2.jpg.html)

a common problem with the R31 and most other locally produced cars with a VDO cluster is the odometer and trim meter stop working, this is due to this little gear being made from rubber in the factory, the local ford wrecker sell the gears for $10+gst, its a fairly easy fix, just requires the cluster to be stripped down and pop the new gear in the side making sure you have removed all of the old gear (or it jams up and breaks again), another problem is the board cracks where a bolt goes through it... this causes the temp gauge to stop working. an easy fix, all you have to do is scrape the coating off the PCB, and solder a jumper in around the crack! ohh and it has a full tank of 98, to prove the fuel gauge works properly!

pic of the stuff used to fix the tail light!

actually im sure i have some lights at my parents that would work pretty well in there...

and unfortunatly i cant put a front number plate in the middle for now... some nugget has lost the clips that go in the bar for the screws... i do have a 'fully sick and hektic' side mount made up here some where that goes in on the indicator.

All silver needs to be done again... typical country car, full of stone chips, and under it looks no better!

I may send it in and have the roof rust fixed, its about the size of a 5c/10c coin, the sill looked at, under the fenders fixed and have the silver done agian, depends on how much of a smile it brings to my face when i get it on the road :)

if i dont smile, ill get the 2pak out and a gun and just do it myself, bog the roof up and put sikaflex under the fenders ;) also falls back to the price, its a $700 car at the end of the day...

in other news im looking at purchasing a 'lokka' for it, its a mechanical locker, locks under acceleration, unlocks when you back off they are a  better option than a minispool, or a full spool, but no where as good as a KAAZ or a tru-track, but better than the 'cone type' Borg Warner LSD...

ha, might have to put it on hold for a while...

damaged my phone a few months back, had it repaired on monday, then damaged it again, i cracked the shits royally, then went and bought a brand new phone... there goes the exhaust money :/

eh...

Get a ballistic case for it. Mine has survived 2 years of both mine and the kids dropping it.....It costs a bit, but it is worth it imo.

I used to be like that.
But in these days of "drought and flooding rains" I save my water for the garden and let nature take its course with the lawn. I just keep it weed free.

I don't have time for gardens unfortunately :-( I have a half arsed hedge I'm trying to get to come good (the good parts were removed for the driveway/car port), a golden cane palm, a Lilly Pilly tree and something else, the rest is lawn because of the ease of maintenance with how many hours I work.

The first thing I did was remove the large palm trees, and clear the side to get good side access!

Good brakes are essential, a32 maxima twin piston callipers on r33 non turbo disks, with ebc greenstuff pads!

$475 to upgrade, pretty cheap imho.
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1357_zpsozzsbt7a.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_1357_zpsozzsbt7a.jpg.html)

Hrmm, the wheels badly needed attention, I wanted white, then I thought silver, BUT I went to a gunmetal colour! It's safe to say you can't see the brake dust on them easily!

$200 to powder coat them, i reckon it's not a bad price... Old mate did a bit of a rough job, but meh.

Gearbox, Ahh shiet...

Y u no last!!!

Well it always had bearing issues, and one day after pulling an epic burnout infront of my boss, it went quiet, very quiet.

So assuming the worst, that a bearing had failed and had been minced, I pulled the box out...
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/DSC_1393_zps2mgw2ohx.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/DSC_1393_zps2mgw2ohx.jpg.html)

This is also the part where I got my dad to help me! Thanks dad!!

Mmm innards.
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/FB_IMG_1403946940734_zpsfa9wsl25.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/FB_IMG_1403946940734_zpsfa9wsl25.jpg.html)

$288 later I had a bearing kit in my hands, this one is pretty good, it had every bearing, most of the springs, keyways seals and shift keys in it.
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/DSC_1395_zps1tgy1tbh.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/DSC_1395_zps1tgy1tbh.jpg.html)

But, I still needed a clutch, so a trip to clutches direct, and a quick talents the guys there had me on my way with the right clutch for what I intend to do with the car!! Mainly drag racing and motorkanahs.

The finished product, new clutch and machined flywheel.
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/sykomonkeeeee/DSC_1400_zpsh4muqcvw.jpg) (http://s15.photobucket.com/user/sykomonkeeeee/media/DSC_1400_zpsh4muqcvw.jpg.html)

Something my neighbours are getting used to seeing, a skyline on jackstands.

But the fun wasn't over, I spotted clutch fluid happily eating the paint off my firewall, so I had to track.down a new clutch master... Luckily I had a slave rebuild kit lying around so I put that in too.

I also had some paint mixed, I don't like bare steel on a car!

Anyhow, it's back to being broken, the injectors decided to leak... So as usual I've tracked down some new ones and am going to put them in on Friday!!

Then it's off to willowbank raceway on Saturday to see what she runs down the 1/4 mile!
