Title: Windscreen Wipers won't stop wiping
Post by: matt7184 on July 12, 2013, 08:10:17
Morning all,

I have a 60 plate (2010) 1.6 Edition Petrol , 22k miles which has been a delight so far.

However I have just had my first issue.. I was parked up last night and had to get out to get something from the boot, while getting out I gently knocked the windscreen wipers upwards and they came on.. no biggie I just placed it back into the off position however they didn't go off, nor on my drive home nor on my drive into work this morning. They are 100% in the off position I even got my father in law to double check I wasn't being stupid and then cross referenced with the manual.

Other than taking it into the garage does anyone have any suggestions on how to reset them? There is no damage to the wiper stick it was literally just nudging them on.

Many thanks for reading.

Are they stuck in the full-on or intermittent position?
I would take it in regardless. Sounds like a switch mechanism failure, perhaps because it was nudged in a different plane of motion. In any case, if it was just a nudge, it should fail.

It isn't on intermittant is it?

Try taking fuse out and then put it back in to see if that resets.

Sounds mechanical to me too.

Did you try a few up/downs and pulls, to try and free it?

Tried moving it in all ranges of motion to try and kick it back into place. Still nothing..

Really daft Q i attempted to get the windscreen wiper  fuse out with my hands/nails and failed should i be using pliers or is there a tool im missing?

There should be a fuse extractor in the engine fusebox cover.

As for the wipers, I believe the control system is in the BCM (body control module). If you have a spare half hour, remove the battery -ve lead, wait 30 mins, then reconnect. See if that "resets" the BCM and sorts you out.

Never mind the blades, don't scratch the screen.  :fum:

I'd remove the wiper arm from the shaft until the problem is resolved. No risk of damage to the screen or the blades then.

Is the stalk set to intermittant or full on so is the stalk switch the issue?

The stalk in my opinion is set to off!

Finishing work soon so will try the fuse.. if nothing will take off the blades before driving home..

Appreciate all the advice guys

Wouldn't it be easier to just pull the fuse?  :undecided:

Some fuses perform multi functions too, better check that b4 removing. Can't you just push the arms forward of the screen, I'm sure no one will notice.  :whistler:

My I30 has separate fuses for both front and back wipers..... :)

I am, but I mostly (unless been doing a lot of tiling or concreting) have real soft baby looking hands  :happydance:
