I really dig my new i30 Elite (2013),.,.,BUT,.,.,it has an unusual feature for a technological marvel of a car.
With the back seats folded down the centre console bin lid can only open halfway up.
So if I've got anything in there that aint squashable it's a tad hard to retrieve.
I'm amazed that the boffins who designed this snazzy car didn't have a moment of 'uhhh hmmm',.,.,.,we better fix that little problem.
It'd only take a few centremetres difference in positioning the lid or bin.

 shoulda bought an old FD  :whistler: :whistler:
-
That is interesting frosty.. never bin mentioned before :D
-
That's alright, I've noticed when the back seats are down I can't sit in the back....
-
So perhaps some time soon you'll be posting a custom bin lid hinge mod on the forum, Frosty.
-
Frosty is right - it is a little irritating because I have the seats down most of the time at present due to using the car as a van to tote rubbish arising from the house refurbishment to the waste tip.
It applied to my previous hatch and the current estate. The answer is to swap the car for the base model which does not have the bin with armrest..........

Who will be first to show off a mod with the hinging changed, maybe the hinges on short rails? :whistler:
-
I would have though Alan, but apparently, he can't be arsed. :snigger:
-
Oh I don't know.
I have it on very good authority that Alan has been arsed. :whistler:

Geez Dave, you'll end up in the poo saying things like that.... :snigger:

Carry on chaps and enjoy yourselves taking the micky out of a poor, 76 year old, ailing and defenceless man..... :blubber:
However - I have been insulted by experts over the years - and such amateur attempts are thus wasted....... :happydance:

I hate to put down a challenge, even as an FD owner. Would anyone post pictures of the lid in operation? I'd like to see whether modding is a feasible option.
-
It will need an articulated hinge, Gonz
-
I'm guessing as much, Phil, but without seeing it, I can't guess whether this could be a type readily available. If so, I would see a viable niche market for someone - or perhaps a good eBay link for the masses (of GD owners).

I have the solution and it is very simple, but not being an engineer,I do not know how to go about the mod,but this too depends on the hinge system and how it is attached to the armrest lid
-
Sounds promising, Rick. I wonder how many will bother, though, if you can buy these (I just Googled now), which appear to be clever enough to open differently.

Good find Gonz.. Not cheap though (thanks to the freight charges)

Yeah, and I'd still be doing my own mod if I were a GD owner. Ali Baba are just like many others online, loading the freight charge to make the unit price look reasonable, but at least we know the designs are out there and feasible.
As for 'articulated hinge', that's the perfect description for what it seems to need, the single fulcrum being replaced by two to allow the lid to move forward as well as up, like some kitchen cupboard doors.
The other type I was picturing is a small version of a slider hinge:

It pulls the back of the lid forward before swing up.
-
like some kitchen cupboard doors.
Yeah, but they wouldn't look nice in an i30 :whistler: :winker:
In Russia they would probably just use kitchen cupboard doors :snigger:

You stole that from me. Is nothing sacred any more? :undecided:
Indeed, I have been insulted by many, many experts during my years on this planet and am now almost used to it.

Yessiree love that ol FD

Easy way remove the lid.
